This is an over simplification! There are a variety of deaths and they elicit a whole range of emotions from the viewer.

I tend to binge watch Whedon shows too, then get disappointed when other shows don't match their quality. But there's a few that have taken my interest over the years. Even though I was ready to hate it instantly, because I'm admittedly prejudiced against bumpy-forehead sci-fi, I really did love Babylon 5 when I saw it for the first time recently. It has real ambition without coming across too pretenious. And silly 90's stuff, like old-school Buffy. 😀

Special mention to Jericho for being the little show that could. It really won me over with that death scene (you know the one).

Dunno. I don't consider Whedon infallible like some. Show wise he's bout 50/50 so far. I'm not necessarily counting Agents of Shield, since his brother is actually the show runner. I ♥ Buffy & Firefly, but didn't care for Angel or Dollhouse. And his Avenger films were good, but not great. To be fair, those I'm sure are heavily influenced by marvel's other franchises. As for quality, there are some really great shows that have been on in the last 10 years or so.

I personally find many of the characters very relatable. But you probably need to enjoy fantasy to like GoT, it's not a show for everyone.

Definitely watch all of BSG, and watch Roswell (the pilot is one of the best ever).

I also second VisionBoy on Being Human UK. And I also can't stress the UK part enough.

And if you want a show complex enough to discuss the way we discuss Buffy, then watch Teen Wolf. But it starts somewhat slow, so you have to push through to the awesomeness.

And you should watch Doctor Who. Again, season 1 was more aimed at younger viewers, so you have to push through it to the darker awesome stuff.

Supernatural of course. Arrow is very good, some of the best depictions of DC characters I've seen.

If you just want a "fun" show that's not too mentally taxing, Limitless has been really enjoyable.

I disagree with that. I didn't think it was slow at all. I mean, compared to where it is now, yeah, but it seemed right out of the gate to get going.

Maybe slow isn't the right word. Maybe it wasn't as complex in the beginning. Season 2 is where I thought things really got going, and then Season 3a was fabulous. Luckily, season 1 is only 12 episodes 😀

Complex. Yes, it's a very simple premise to start which can easily draw you in.
Second Chance at First Line being only the second episode would be anything but slow. That's just a great episode, period.

I'm just saying I could have given up on it in Season 1, watching the first time. It's better when you watch it again because you know the characters.

Did you watch it as aired? I binged it trying to get caught up for the (i think) third season. That might be why.

I would recommend South Park, especially the period between Season 8 and Season 14.

If you see it from a story writer's point of view, it's much more than cheap humor and social commentary. The characterizations and plots are often great and sometimes perfect. If you watch carefully you will be surprised at how they could tell a whole story with expectation subversions in only 20 minutes with tons of extra sub-plots and banter moments.

Plus, the songs in South Park are top-notch. About three hundred levels higher than OMWF songs. Sorry Joss. Your talents are in other places than music.

Yes, but totally different so its a silly comparason. I'd say they both work, but for different reasons.

I'm not attacking Joss. He was relatively new to the music field when he made the musical while Trey Parker received professional training and had a lot of experiences long before him.

The comparison can be made quite objectively. The staging, composition and rhythms are all much better in South Park.

OMWF was great because the songs fit well in the story flow of the season. The lyrics are also good but have glitches and flaws here and there. The music composition... less so.

IMO Joss is better at plot weaving, group dynamic arrangement and dialogues. His works can all live very very well without music. In South Park, on the other hand, atmosphere/background musics and songs are essential parts.

The Librarians (but it has been replaced by "The Magicians" for the spring season)

You will see Christian Kane here along with Rebecca Romijn, John Larroquette and Lindy Booth. Good light entertainment. So far, "The Magicians" hasn't done anything worth watching yet.

Scorpion

A great show with some outstandingly improbable plot lines, but good overall.

CSI: Cyber

One of the CSI series focusing on cyber crime. Patricia Arquette is every bit as wooden as Marc Blucas and her lines are delivered in a monotone, like a Fed Ex package but with even less drama. The supporting cast is a lot better.

My wife is a great fan of British detective shows where one or more of the population of some quaint village in England gets murdered every week. It makes Sunnydale seem tame.

i've been watching hannibal, which is utterly amazing. hugh dancy and mads mikalson are brilliant as will graham (portrayed in manhunter by william peterson and red dragon by ed norton) and hannibal lector, respectively. the show follows the earlier days of the two characters, well before anyone is aware of the sorts of things mr. lector gets up to. at this point, he's still a respected psychiatrist who is relied upon by the fbi. brilliant, dark, and out of control grotesque, this mesmerizing show is blowing me away.

@Blaze I stuck around about 3 episodes before I bounced. The set-up seemed absurd and unbelievable, but I can't recall my specific thoughts about it anymore. Plus some of the characters, initially intriguing, quickly became mildly irritating. Several of my friends love the show and swear by it though. Maybe I'll give it one more chance in the future. I do take their opinion about things seriously. So you may be right, I might not have stuck around long enough.

What about his Much Ado About Nothing? That was pretty great and should not be overlooked in all this.

If you can't stand Aaron Sorkins writing you're forgiven but that's about it. Kean needs to be here (I know, I know), she loves it too and sell it better much better than I do.

Alias - Often seems to be forgotten and it shouldn't be. Good entertainment and a kick-ass female lead.

Battlestar Galactica - The newest (to this date) version. Don't look at is in sci-fi just because it takes place in space. It's a survival story and about being human, in different ways.

Doctor Who (new series)- Yes, it's special. Can seem complicated and the effects aren't always the best but if you manage to see beyond that it's a wonderful world to get lost in. Blink is a great episode and are often suggested for people that's never watched the show. I love it but don't think it represents the show in general. The first season isn't bad but to me it's gets real good starting with the first christmas special. Hello David Tenant.

Chuck - Just silly good fun spy action.
Psych - Silly, good fun.
Sherlock - Few but 90 minute long episodes definitely worth checking out.

24 (perfect to binge watch), Game of thrones, Veronica Mars, Fringe, old The X-files, Stargate (firstly SG-1) & Vikings are also easy to recommend. Finally, My so-called life & Freaks and Geeks are shows that people at least need to give a try.

I'll also agree with the recommendations for 'Continuum'. As a guy who watches a lot of genre shows for our weekly podcast I can attest that 'Continuum' is one of the smartest shows ever to air on TV. It's also an excellent show with a kick-ass female lead.

If you like very sharp dialog and characters that you can totally identify with I would also highly recommend 'iZombie'. It's from Rob Thomas who also did Veronica Mars. Much like with Buffy the dialog is sometimes so good that you'll want to rewind scenes to make sure you didn't miss something. If you're not a fan of zombies don't worry. It is not anything like The Walking Dead or Z Nation or any other zombie show. Try a few episodes and you'll likely find yourself hooked. Season 1 is on Netflix streaming. Trailer below...

The West Wing is my favorite show! Also surprisingly funny. Alias is easily my favorite Abrams project. Sadly he left after 1st season & it kind of spiraled after that. 🙁
BSG is another one of my top 5 shows! Really liked the 1st 2 seasons of Chuck. Went downhill after. I like Sherlock, but I don't think it's the greatest thing ever like some folks.

The Vampire Diaries as that buffy vibe about it, season 5 is kinda hard to get through but the rest is great, also has a darker spin off in The Originals.

Izombie is another good one, although I've yet to see season 2, but will when it's on netflix

Supernatural, yes season 6 is a hard season, and it does go downhill for a while after season 5 but picks up again by season 9 (You can play spot the whedonverse actor too)

Librarians is good for a lighter show, plus the bonus of Christian Kane as a main character in it.

Lucifer is a new show I'm loving, got good humour to it, and a slight supernatural element in the angels.
