I find that the thread about rating recent movies we've seen to be very diverse and interesting, but as I don't watch many movies these days (I mostly watch TV shows or read) I keep getting these movies into my head, that I want to talk about. So I thought of this.
I thought we could have a thread where, whenever something reminds us of a great movie that maybe is underrated or for some reason we think maybe not everyone has heard of (especially seeing as we're all from different places around the world) we could put it here, give a small blurb and our opinion, spoiler-free of course, and the rest of the board could then decide whether they'd take a chance on the movie (or show)
(to the mods; sorry if it's in the wrong place, since it's not Whedonverse related, I didn't want to put it under the Game forum)
Since I got the idea for this for a reason, I'm gonna kick this off 😀
Sleepers (1996)
Starring; Kevin Bacon, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt
Summary; Four boys growing up in Hell's Kitchen play a prank that leads to an old man getting hurt. Sentenced to no less than one year in the Wilkinson Center in upstate New York, the four friends are changed by the beating, humiliation and sexual abuse by the guards sworn to protect them. Thirteen years later and a chance meeting lead to a chance for revenge against the Wilkinson Center and the guards.
This is such a powerful film, with its themes and its acting, unsurprisingly based on the list of actors 🙂
I saw this when I was very young, perhaps too young in some people's opinion, but it struck a chord with me and stayed with me as I grew up. I find myself often putting other films up against this...and finding them wanting.
This is not, however, for the faint of heart, this is not fade-to-black, this is horribly shown (as much as a Hollywood film could, at least) to the point that you can't walk away from this and only say that it was 'an entertaining flick'...it is so much more than that.
To anyone who has never watched it and/or never heard of it, my advice is to check it out as soon as you can, but maybe don't watch it by yourself? It's not scary, but it's still horrifying...
Rating; 9/10 (only because I haven't seen it in a while, if I had, it'd probably be a perfect score)

I love Sleepers (love probably isn't the right word). The Witchi Tai To scene kills me, it's so well acted.

The Magdalene Sisters was one really great but haunting/disturbing movie. Oh and did I mention true story! o_O
