Recruiting company in What's My Line part 1

In the first part of the "What's My Line", Willow is disappointed to see she's not on the career charts.... and it turns out some mysterious "software" company has been watching her (and Oz) and wants them to work for them....

But nothing ever comes of this.

So it makes me wonder.... who/what are they? a sort of initiative thing or a sort of w & h thing.... or what?

thoughts are welcome!!!!
 
Wanna be Microsoft recruiters with a dash of us government spooks
 
Now that you bring it up, it could be the Initiative trying to recruit some software people for their technology down in the labs.

Or we could just be analyzing this too much 😛

I like that thought, - and hahaha overanalyze buffy - impossible. ;-)

I just wish they had gone somewhere with it....
 
The recruiters state that the big boss would have been there to meet them but his plane got held up at SeaTac (Seattle - Tacoma Airport). Microsoft is in Redmond WA and that is where the big boss (Bill Gates) would have flown in from, so it would be logical to think that it was Microsoft that was interviewing them.

But I do like Kittenpoker's idea the Microsoft is a Wolfram & Hart company (or at least a client). That would explain a lot.

I think it would make more sense if it was Apple. 😉 I still remember thinking it was so weird. Internet on the phone? When would that ever be used? A huge tablet that's basically a smartphone, no, wait, you can't call with it?" And no they're everywhere.

Although it would have been nice to have it tie in to either Wolfram and Hart or The Initiative. I find it frustrating when they throw away storylines.

I didn't really look too much into who the people (from the 'mysterious software company') were that recruited Willow & Oz.
 
remember cell phones where invented by bored Warlocks or something to that effect

I agree. Every time I watch this episode, I wonder why this software company is never at least mentioned again. It's weird... I know the writers don't have time to think about everything, but it would be nice to have it get brought up in conversation, at the very least.

I think they were trying to insinuate that it was Microsoft, but they would have had to purchase the rights to use the name, so they just leave it to the viewers' imaginations. (It still would have been a good idea for Microsoft to buy product placement, just like Apple did with Willow's laptop.) Sometimes leaving broad hints in the story and letting the viewer fill in the blanks is the right thing to do, and good for water cooler discussion the next day.

I don't think Wolfram & Hart had been invented yet in the Angel series and it does get awkward tying two separate shows together. Crossover episodes are fun, if the same network is committed to carrying both shows and viewers want to watch both shows. When that is not the case, you can lose control of the narrative.
 
Loving all the thoughts!!!! I think, obviously, it's a plot device to get willow and oz together - but still - microsoft having people track them - now i admit i i don't know how being recruited for a major company works but to be secretly monitored and then wined and dined (or given weird shrimp canopy thingies) behind closed doors seems a bit excessive.... I just wish somehow it it brought up again. Just because it was a plot device doesn't mean it couldn't have gone somewhere. But I guess it's fun to make our own guesses. And hey, thats what fan fiction is for huh? 🙂
 
I think the main point of that was to show how Oz is Willow's intellectual equal -- that he's just as smart as her, and that they have enough in common to make a good couple.

Previously Oz was only shown as a slacker/guitar player, and I couldn't really picture them together until that moment over the canapes 🙂
 
I always got the impression that it was something to do with the fbi guys from 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight.' Maybe that was just my mind trying to make a pattern out of randomness though. 😉
 
In the area Willow and Oz are taken to there is a company logo an X with a trail of dashes like the Windows logo

You're probably right but its fun when stuff like this happens. I never gave much thought to this incident, but I like the idea of tying it in. Too bad there wasn't a small hint of future seasons in the earlier ones. 😛
