Cult series Red Dwarf set to come back to Earth for TV special


Cult sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is to return to TV screens for a special two-part series more than 20 years after it was first aired.

For eight series totalling 52 episodes Dave Lister wanted to return to his home planet.

Now, at last, he has - in Red Dwarf: Back to Earth.

Written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor, the new show reunites Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten.

The two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, will kick start a Red Dwarf Easter weekend from Good Friday on TV channel Dave.

This will be followed by Red Dwarf: Unplugged, a "no holds barred" episode with no sets, no effects - and no autocue.

The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new production.

Dave will reveal news snippets from the production at joindave.co.uk.

The cast, including Llewellyn as Kryton and Barrie as Arnold Rimmer, will reunite for the two-part special

Red Dwarf is Dave's biggest commission yet and its first foray into scripted comedy.

The offbeat series, set in space, has enjoyed phenomenal success since it first aired in 1988 on BBC2.

It brought in more than eight million viewers for series eight, sold 7.25 million DVD and videos worldwide, broadcast in some 25 territories worldwide and won International Emmy and British Comedy Awards.

The actors have hit the headlines for various reasons since the show ended.
Charles now plays toyboy cabbie Lloyd in Coronation Street.

In November last year, John-Jules was ordered to carry out 120 hours community service for assaulting two refuse collectors.

Wooooooooooooooo! One of my alltime favourite shows, can't wait. Luckily i have the dave channel *laughs at sweetescape*
Maybe if this comeback goes well, there might be a tiny wee shred of hope for the long, long, long awaited Red Dwarf movie? or am i just clutching at straws?

I really want a movie but we'll have to see how this is received. I'm surprised the BBC aren't airing it..wasn't that the original channel it aired on?
I also only want a movie if it has all the old cast and with this special it looks more likely 😀

Always has been and always should be a BBC show - the reason Dave is airing it is because Dave is part owned by the BBC and they own the full rights to the old episodes and have commissioned the specials
I read this today.

I took from it that the episode on Good Friday would be a documentary about the show then on Easter Sunday the No Holds Barred was a behind the scenes of the Documentary that would also have a part that would be an 'episode' without any effects, makeup, nothing.

Either way, this pleases me. Hopefully there will be enough interest in this to do the oft talked, never commissioned, movie.

I heard about this, I'm looking forward to seeing it at some point. But it's on Dave? 🙁 I love Red Dwarf so much. Also, I agree, there needs to be a movie. 😀

That's great news!

I caught quite a few episodes when our local PBS affiliate ran them late on Fridays a few years ago. That kinda makes me want to get the DVDs....

I too would be jumping for joy but for the utter disgrace they made the show into after the 6th series, I fear any comeback episodes or film would be dumbed down even more (if thats even possible).
Im keeping my expectaion low im afraid.

The 7th series was definitley weaker than the previous six, not having Rimmer around for all the episodes didn't help matters and i didn't really take to Kochansky straight away but it had it's moments, and i think they did a good job on the 8th season. I would in no way call it a "disgrace" but each to his own and all that. You'll still get Red Dwarf karma 😛

See that is it, isn't it.
It may have had less Rimmer BUT it had the 'Arnold Rimmer Song' which in my mind is the single greatest TV moment - even better than Delboy falling through the bar!
