In Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel/Firefly there are many references to Film, TV, Music, Literature, everything! And some of them are so obscure.

Which references do you like/dislike, think are funny, surprised you, etc..

Oh gosh, where to start.

I think one of my favorites is in "Smashed" when Spike tells Warren, "Help me out here Spock, I don't speak loser."

Another one that's not really my favorite-favorite but is just something is in "What's My Line, Pt.2" when Spike says ,"By George, I think he's got it." I was actually watching "My Fair Lady" at that point and I found it to be pretty cool.

Oh! And when Andrew and Buffy mention Thunderdome! 🙂

The other reference that I found amusing was when Andrew was talking about the movie Misery. A couple of weeks after that I ended up reading the book and felt really sick. 😛

I love that Spock-line. :)
There are so many... the one that immediately came to mind was in Two To Go during Spike's trials he says, "Here we are now, entertain us," which is of course from Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit. So Spike 🙂

Semi-related, I love when on Gilmore Girls Lorelai references to Buffy when she says to Rory, ""It's eleven o'clock at night; who're you hoping to hook up with now: Spike and Drusilla?" lol.

Yes. That Gilmore Girls reference is awesome. Karma.
I'm not sure if it was Gilmore Girls, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that there was an episode where someone said that they wished that Spike and Buffy would get together? Something along those lines?

The other reference I just thought about was the Uno reference that Xander made in "Seeing Red", since I'm playing cards. 🙂

The sinister, yet addictive card game....good times.
completely loved willows she couldnt have dressed up like xena line so funny and me been such a pro gay willow follower i always think its a possible reference for things to come with the whole xena and gabrielle as lesbian icons thing

always loved giles joke about been one of the original members of pink floyd and tara's lord of the dance but not the scary kind gag funny funny

I LOVE when they make the pop culture references. I loved in Season 2 when Buffy could never get Acathala's name right and called it the "tomb of Al Franken" and the "tomb of Alfalfa". 😉 Too funny...

In "Crush", Harmony refers to Dru as Morticia from the Addams Family. (Mercedes appeared in both Addams Family fims as one of the girl scouts concidentally)

In "Chosen", Spike says, "Well I think it's fair to say school's out for bloody summer." A reference to the Alice Cooper song "Schools Out."

In "Him", Buffy catches Dawn dancing all skanky she says to Dawn, "Anna Nicole Smith thinks you look tacky." lol.

There were actually a few references to Anne Rice's vampire books. In "School Hard", Spike says to Angel: "People still fall for that old Anne Rice routine?" In "Buffy Vs Dracula", Buffy tells Dracula: "I've fought more than a couple pimply, overweight vamps that called themselves Lestat." In "Origin", Connor asks Angel: "Do you spend all your time making out with other vampires, like in Anne Rice novels?"

In "Bargaining", Anya says that with her purchase on e-bay of the Urn of Osiris they also threw in a Backstreet Boys lunch box for Xand"¦. ahem"¦ a "friend". lol.

Then there's "Sleeper", Buffy asks the bouncer if he's seen Spike. The Bouncer says, "Yeah I know the guy, Billy Idol wannabe." And Buffy starts to tell him that Billy Idol actually stole his look from Spike.

Phew, alright, thats enough for now.

You brought up some good ones that I forgot about, such as the Backstreet Boys lunchbox. LMAO Classic!

My least favourite is that Spike supports Man U. Why would he support Man U. Isn't he meant to be from London?

Because Man U are the best. Glory Glory Man United!!!
I made a wee funny noise when I got this reference to one of my favourite films.

ANGEL
Right there.
(looks at a large tree)
You wanna bet that's the entrance to the Deeper Well?

SPIKE
Either that, or Christmasland. Do you ever have any fun?

Hehe, I know someone who supports Liverpool and he happens to be a crazy Swede....

Me too! And it was SPIKE who's seen it!!!

That´s not the same thing. I´m from a different country all together. So I agree with cait. But I´m guessing they just went with the best english club at the moment they wrote it. :(

Yes, but we all know that no one from Liverpool actually suppors Liverpool... I'm looking at you Kinslayer...............
Xander's "I am the bug man, coo coo ca choo" reference to the beatles is one of my all time favorites.

any and all Star Wars references, i just could NOT get enough of those with the trio.

and OMG, the mention of Trogdor the Burninator in Chosen was AMAZING (reference to the homestar runner website and strongbad).

Yeah, the bugman line from Xander definitely made me giggle... Yay for Beatles fans! :)
I'm definitely NOT a Star Wars fan by any means, but my hubby definitely is and he would crack up laughing at all the Trio's references to them, such as fighting over the model of the ship they painted on the van. LOL

Ooh, ooh! When Spike claimed the key was "that guy on TV that tells you what stuff costs". (The Price is Right) LOl, and the minion was all, "We will bring you the limp and beaten body of Bob Barker".

Anya referenced Bugs Bunny, painting him as the villain of course in Spiral when suggesting ways to kill Glory, "We should drop a piano on her. Well, it always works for that creepy cartoon rabbit when he's running from that nice man with the speech impediment."

Then of course there's Willow and XAnder's tradition of watching A Charli Brown Christmas together and Xander's Snoopy dance. 🙂

And Harmony's only willing to have a threesome if its "boy, boy, girl...or Chalize Theron."

One of my VERY favorites is when Spike is seemingly watching Dawson's Creek and we hear him say, "Oh Pacey, you blind idiot. Can't you see she doesn't love you?" Buffy also references Dawson's Creek in Chosen when she says to Angel, "Are you gonna go all Dawson on me everytime I have a boyfriend?".

Pacey karma...I can admit that I have often wondered if Spike was talking about Andy or Joey. Shame on me!

LMAO!!! I had forgotten all about that one, and that line always makes me laugh so hard every time... I guess I'm morbid as hell, but the mental image of Glory's demons going after poor old Bob Barker is HILARIOUS to me. 😉

Um....let me see.....
Buffy

Buffy: actually Billy Idol stole his look from....

Angel
Illyria's names
Little Shiva
Smurf
Blubird

Isn't there another time they reference Buffy on Gilmore Girls? I can't put my finger on it....

Airam

I think maybe, but I can't think of it either.
Its not in Buffy BUT its about Buffy and in one of my fave TV shows Spaced

[Discussing Twist]
Tim: She's shallow, Brian. She's like Cordelia out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and latterly Angel, the spin off series which is set in LA.
Brian: Don't know what you're talking about.
Tim: Brian, you're such a square!

Gilmore Girls

Rory teases Paris, who's afraid to go outside in the dark. Rory asks if "she's afraid to run into Drusilla and Spike".

True Blood

Sam: "You know what I wish would come to Marthaville? Buffy or Blade or one of those badass vampire killers to come get Bill Compton."

Airam

In True Blood was that like a sarcastic comment or was Buffy aknowledged as a real person?
W

It was sarcastic.
