Ok...so after all of the potentials became Slayers, they started focusing on the older Slayers. What about the younger ones? Like there has to be a five year old Slayer somewhere. I understand the forces of evil wouldn't want to go after a five year old considering she's probably not a threat, but shouldn't the Scoobies be going around and picking them up, too?

Interesting point, i wondered about a fairly similar subject a few months ago in regards to elderly slayers

And if you go back further what if their are some slayer empowered foetuses out there being born in some alienesque way, ewww lol

hmm...acutally, killing all the little slayers would be a good idea for the demons, because then once the older slayers die, there will be no one left to be threatening. little kids arent quite as threatening as older girls! 🙂

Good point but then again the older slayers are a more immediate threat, suppose the best course of action would be a double assault, i.e. some big company like wolfram and hart taking out young slayers or corrupting them, while leaving all the other slayers to your more run of the mill demons and other bad guys.

Where are we getting your info from? We're never told they didn't go and let the younger slayers know what happened to them! We are told there was something like 1800 in the world, but only 500 working for them!

I'm not getting it anywhere...I'm just asking about something that hasen't yet been clearly explained. 🙂

I thought it was a good topic... 🙁

Good point maybe part of the reason there are only 500 slayers working for them is that the restare too old/young

I think it would be a good idea to at least put some focus on the younger slayers. Sure, the more mature slayers can fight the wars or what have you...but you've got a whole bunch of young ones that won't know why they're now stronger than their older brother or whatever.

Who knows? Maybe they need to talk with their parents or at least make the younger slayers understand their newfound power. They are the ones that will take over so I think they should at least be warned about what upcoming responsibility they'll have.

Hogwarts for slayers perhaps?

I always assumed that Slayerism came with puberty, it just seemed to make sense within the context of the show...I hadn't even considered that there might be younger ones. Is there anything to back this up TC, or are you just theorising?

I absolutely agree on the whole puberty/slayer-potential connection.
well, when buffy is doing her monologue in 'chosen', i believe they show a picture of a little girl playing baseball, implying that she is a potential who will now be a slayer.

a possibility could be that when a slayer was activated before now, an older one would always have been picked, because she'd handle it better and do better as a slayer. however, once all potentials became slayers, any little ones who would have had the potential to be slayers when older, would now be slayers, thus making young slayers.

Yeah and even though not canon there was a book in tales of the slayer that they mentioned there being a slayer called at the age of 12 and also that little girl that became a slayer when she was playing baseball and also that overweight girl they should didn't look that old. Which brings up another question how can an overweight girl be a slayer? I mean they obviously can't move like a skinner girl to fight demons and such and I don't mean this as a joke or jab or whatever toward bigger woman I'm just saying, that's like if Spiderman was overweight, he wouldn't be able to do the things he does now with the effienciency he does now

Sure they might not be able to move as fast but I would think they could possibly make up for it in other ways. It's just a play on your strengths kind of deal.

I don't think just because a girl may have been potentially a slayer before Chosen, it would mean that she'd have to be fit-ish. Sure, maybe she should have been fit but childhood obesity is a major problem in quite a few developed countries for many reasons, so to me it wouldn't be a surprise that a bigger girl would become a slayer.

It was obvious in the clip that she wasn't living a golden life which may or may not have affected her physical health but I definately wouldn't discount her in a fight.

Oh the other hand how can a tiny little wisp of a girl kick down a giant steel door. She can, because the writers say she can. If the writers say a reubenesque girl can outrun an antelope, then she can.

The Hulk's a big boy, and Hulk stomps. He can jump a mile.

which brings the question of I wonder what exactly qualifies a person to be a potential slayer. I mean if the major qualification of being a slayer is to be a female then what exactly is it that makes certain girls special, that's something I'd wish Joss would perhaps explain. Like okay these girls are chosen, but chosen by what. I mean The Powers That Be didn't create the slayer, humans did, so what exactly is it that they used in their dark magicks that said who could and who could not be a slayer.

I used to wonder about the Potentials who had been overlooked until they became too old to be called as well as those too young to fight effectively, but the possible answer might be something like this. In order to be considered a true Potential, a girl must be a certain minimum age (possibly when she reaches puberty), and loses her eligibility after she passes a certain age. That being the case, the chance for infant or geriatric Slayers would be eliminated. That would give Buffy's statement about eighteen hundred girls being found, but only five hundred "working" with them. The other eight hundred girls would be Slayers, but Slayers who had not yet come into their power. Hence, the "Slayers In Waiting," to differentiate them from the old Potentials, would receive their Calling once they reach a certain age, not when a present Slayer dies. All of these "S.I.W.s" would be either actually recruited at discovery or identified so that they can be recruited at a later date, closer to the time of their powers manifesting themselves. As for those too old to serve, some of them could be recruited to become Watchers os serve in some similar capacity, or simply allowed to live their lives as they saw fit.

If all of the above is the case, there might even be the possibility of a Slayer "retiring" when she reaches a certain age if she survives that long, but no one ever having lived that long, the Watchers simply aren;t aware of it.

I don't think there is anything special about the potentials, which I think is the point , they can be anyone! It's not about the circumstances around you (where you live, your hight or your weight) If your a girl you have the possibility to be a potential!

I always took it as you were born a potential, and it wasn't a comeing of age thing!

but that's exactly the point. if anyone can become the Slayer, how come ALL the girls in the world weren't Called? there's has to be something, at some basic primal level, that seperates the girls that can be Slayers and those that can't. it could be a gene, something that the original demon recognizes in the girls with Potenial, telling it that this girl can be the Slayer.

but i agree with your other point, BEG. i always assumed that all the Potentials were born with the potential to be the Slayer, not something they grew into. girls reach puberty at different ages, some earlier than others. a 10 year old girl could still be Chosen, because that's the age she started puberty.

I would agree, it would make more sense that way! But I think if there was it would defeat the point of the show, it's not that each person is special but that girls are selected randomly!

Like Anya mentions it in Get it done. She says something like she isn't special, she was just selected, but they don't know that she is actually better then them!

But if it's just a random selection, how are the English coven identifying potentials in Season 7, and how is it slayers like Kennedy had a watcher before they were called?

In fact I'm not sure I understand what you're saying BEG.

I always took it as you were born a potential, and it wasn't a comeing of age thing!

How is that random? If you're born with green eyes, there's a specific genetic reason why that's so.

The way i saw it was like when you were bron, you where born a potential, just say every 1 in 1000 girls is selected at random to be a potential. It's like you have:

(Large group) All the Girls in the World > (Smaller group) Potentials > (smallest group) Those selected to be Slayers.

The potential is given to girls randomly, but they have it. Then the watchers council can find them, train them like Kendra or Kennedy, and sometimes they are selected as Slayers.

That was always how I thought of the whole thing!
