any idea how the Fratboy cult on it (dont ask me to quote the greek letter designation , lol) recruited, as they were involved with kidnapping and murder.


It doesnt say so explicitly, think they were either mentally influenced, or under a Geas not to reveal things?

Also think "back to back life sentences" is appropiate?

Many of them probaly were in the fraternity out of family loyalty.

Most of the rest had probaly got sucked up into the Ideal of being a part of a 'spooky cult'

They needed counseling, not life behind bars.

Am I just being too much "sympathy for the devil" here.
 
Yeah, I think you're being a little more sympathetic then the episode calls for. They're all in university and therefore, they're all adults (or at the very youngest, age 17, which for a crime of that nature would have you tried as an adult most places in North America) and "just following orders" has never, ever been an acceptable legal defense. It's never worked, in just about any setting, and for good reason. Being afraid to stand up to your peers when you know they're doing something wrong makes you a party to what they're doing, even if you don't agree with it or don't want it to happen. If you don't have the guts or the will to stand up to something as evil as murderous ritual sacrifices which involve feeding innocent young girls to a giant snake, then you're a pretty bad person yourself.

There were enough guys in that fraternity that I'm sure some of them probably didn't fully agree with what was going on, but from what we see in the episode most of them were perfectly fine with it. They all deserved what they got.
 
Another thing just occured to me, How do you think buffy will respond if any of them either escape or are paroled if she hears about it.
 
With the bones that were found in the well, I doubt any of them are getting out. I can't remember how many sacrifices they had to do, but I think I'm right in guessing three a year, considering Buffy, Cordy and the missing girl are this year's sacrifices.

For a four year college term, that's twelve people that each frat boy is responsible for killing, whether they were directly involved in the actually killing or not. They're still accessories to murder. It'll be decades if any of them ever see the light of day, if ever. Buffy will probably be long dead.

As for the boys, [MENTION=11975]Robb Stark[/MENTION] is right - they had free will. They knew what they were doing but they went along with it, because they liked the perks. They liked knowing what...that demon who's name I have forgotten did for them. At any time, any of them could have walked away, but they didn't. They deserve nothing less than life sentences.

One problem I had is I find it hard to believe that none of them at any point... decided to rat Machida out.

I'm guessing the OATH they had to swear was supernatural in some way.

I think its possible using that kind of "rule of drama" that one of the Zetta Delta Kappa's could get paroled at some point.

What would happen then, is anyones guess...

Buffy if she was still alive would probaly just want to get their addresses noted somewhere possibly with the new slayer organization.

with one of their agents assigned to watch the person in question, and make sure their just getting a job, and trying avoid notice.
 
If one of the frat guys went to the cops and said 'there's a demon in the basement of my frat house and we sacrifice victims to it in order to get stinking rich' people aren't going to give them much credit. As we've seen, the police in Sunnydale are monumentally stupid. Plus, if any of them did go and investigate before Buffy killed the thing, chances are, it, or the frat boys, would just kill the cops.

And none of them knew about the Slayer or Watchers, so there's no possibility they would go to Buffy or Giles.

And don't forget, this was a family tradition, handed down through generations. The boys were literally raised knowing all about the demon and what they would have to do when they finally got to college. It was like brainwashing and indoctrination.

And, again, they turn the demon and the other boys in, they lose everything. No money, no power, no success. Not many people who are raised like they were would be willing to give all that up.
 
Good points.

One of the reasons I argued they were entitled to clemency... arguments have been made that cult or gang memers deserve clemency because they were brainwashed.

It was made on behalf of a lot of soldiers in Concentration camps at least.
