Reputations?

What are Reputation points and what do they mean?
I looked around trying to see if there were already any threads over it, but I didn't see any...

See that check/x graphic in the top right corner of posts? You can rate other people's posts, and the result of all the ratings is your reputation level.

I don't know that there are actual points involved, but other people's comments do affect your rating.

Nothing important... Just browsing around and was wondering how you go about viewing someone else's preutation comments. I can see the ones in my own "file" but no one else's?
