Requesting the help of the BB feminists

So I know we have quite a few feminists, so I thought I'd ask... I'm doing a paper on the ethical issues with the way gender roles are portrayed in the media. I was hoping some of you might be able to recommend some articles or people who might be good to look at in writing this paper.

Iiih, I'm always really happy when I see the word feminist in a thread title. 😀 And YES, I can help! It's not articles (I can't think of any english ones at the moment), but Feminist frequency on youtube! Pretty much all of her vids are great. She had a whole series about trophes in television that was spot on! Also: She loves buffy! 😀 I think you should still be able to refer to her as a source I think? Either way, I hope this tip was helpful! Even if you can't refer to her you might get some tips on stuff to say in your analysis!


Oh, I just remembered! There's a feminist magazine called Bitch. I'm sure they'll have some great articles in some of their issues!

There's a book called Mother, Monsters and Whores by Sjoberg and Gentry. It deals specifically with how the media deals with violent women, putting them into one of three categories 1) Angry, vengeful mothers, 2) Inhuman monsters or 3) Corrupted by their sexuality. These are the three reasons given anytime women commit violent acts and the book argues they are placed in these categories because a violent women breaks our society's gender norms.

It is a really very interesting read. 🙂

Ooh I almost forgot about a great book I read quite awhile ago, Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female With the Mass Media. It focuses mainly on U.S. TV & film in the 50s-60s. I would highly HIGHLY recommend reading some Michel Foucault. He writes some amazing theories. Specifically look at the 'male gaze' theories.

Oh and Damned Whores and God's Police can be applied to so much media that it's almost beyond a joke. Even the amazing BtVS is a sucker for it.
