Resident Evil is headed to television. I have learned that Netflix is developing a scripted series based on the hit action horror franchise. I hear the series will be a Netflix global original. German production and distribution company Constantin Film, which is behind the Resident Evil movies loosely based on the Capcom video game series, is the studio. Search is underway for a showrunner to shepherd the adaptation.

No one is commenting but I hear the plan is for the series to expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the exiting mythology. I hear the series will keep the basic premise, which also served as a setup for the movie franchise. The drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and “easter eggs.”

I have neither seen the movie(s) nor played the game, for fans of either, does this excite you? How deep does the mythology run? I thought it was a fairly cut-and-dried thing.

I can see fans of the game liking this idea. I think most people who love the game hated the movies and probably felt they didn't do the game justice. I think I saw the first movie and remember it being dire.

@Bluebird Was the reverse true? Did they have characters not in the movies that were in the games?

I'd say I was a fan, since I got the Resident Evil 2 Remake that was released today and got up at 8am on my day off to play it lol. I played them since the first one in 1996.

To be quite frank, the story of Resident Evil is a sci-fi b-movie with zombies and mutants, it's not high art, so I don't see why it is being redone for the screen. It's quite shallow. Even a lot of fans wouldn't really be interested, I don't think, because they ain't playing it for the story. It is riddled with clichés, and that makes it fun, but I don't want to see that televised.


@Spanky Yeah, there's loads of differences actually. Probably why I didn't see the appeal, because nostalgia is the only reason I'd go see one of those dumb movies.

The movies were awful because they had very little to do with the game. The games were creepy, atmospheric survival horror about zombies, with some action set-pieces, a corporate conspiracy, 'mad science' monsters and the like. It was cheesy, camp and stupid but it was still a lot better than what the movies were. The RE movies quickly became laughably stupid OTT action movies after the first outing. That's why fans hate them.
Also they're just objectively stupid movies, the plots make no sense and the motivations of the bad guys is just pure comedy.

And lastly it was pretty much 'Alice/Milla Jovovich' the superhero and a bunch of shallow characters waiting to be killed off' The Movie. RE actually has a whole bunch of iconic (from the game players perspective) male and female characters that can be utilized, and whilst the movies sometimes had a character named after one from the games that's all they had in common.

The premise for this seems...better? They would do well to not go the post-apocalypse-zombies-everywhere route since the movies and other shows have covered that enough already. Keeping it a bit more grounded and sticking closer to the games in terms of characters and plot would be a good start; an emphasis on horror in isolated places combined with a corporate conspiracy cover-up willing to do anything to cover their asses/get their way. That would probably resonate a bit more with modern audiences.

This new tv series sounds interesting. I never played the games but I’ve read about what happened in some of them.

I watched a few of the films, but didn’t think much of them. Liked the third and fifth one the most in a “so bad, it’s good” sort of way.

I love the movies, I've never played the games. The movies aren't fantastic or anything, but for me, they are perfect action flicks and I'm not usually a zombie fan. Anyway, I really enjoyed the films, so I'll definitely give the show a chance. I do hope they'll stick closer to the game world this time, just so fans of the game won't be disappointed again. Either way, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, more than likely.

If the movie was really like the game, the character would keep resurrecting at same spot that they just died. 😉
