Oh my God. So...I was searching for a certain quote from a Woody Allen movie for my paper when I stumbled across a quote from Magnolia.

"Respect the c*ck...and tame the c*nt. Tame it."

And I thought, wow, that sounds a lot like a line Xander says in OMWF, except regarding a donut...so I looked into it...

and lo and behold, it is a reference to Magnolia!

From TV.com:

Xander: Respect the cruller. And tame the donut!

This line is an homage to the film Magnolia in which Tom Cruise's character, Frank T.J. Mackey says...

"Respect the c*ck. And tame the c*nt. Tame it."

DAMN, Xander! I guess Anya was the only one that got that one!

I can't believe I never caught this rather offensive reference before.

Anyone else ever notice this?

Sexist Xander is funny! He has to cope with the fact that every woman he knows could kick his butt in their sleep :D

I was wondering about the origins of that line.

I was wondering why he said that. Didn't make sense to me.

oh nice!!!
There are a lot of cleverly disguised messages in Buffy like that. In the epp where they are going to burn Buffy at the stake, they quote Joan Crawford. They reference "Faster Pussycat: Kill Kill Kill" and about a million other obscure pop culture things, such as the episode of Star Trek: TNG where the Enterprise is caught in a temporal anomaly, the fact that noone liked Timothy Dalton as James Bond, etc. etc.

No, I know. Buffy is full of delightful little references...I just thought I had got all of them! I feel like a rather bad fan now. I always thought that line was really odd, and now I get it!

Usually when there is a line like that I don't get I assume it was a reference to something and spend a frantic waste of time looking up something I had no interest in had it not been mentioned in the show I was watching. Sometimes I find delightful things.

Every song in the musical, for example, is a parody on a song from another musical, done in the same style but with completely difference subject matter, or so I am told.

very true. I always tell people OMWF is a parody, and they never believe me.
If that is truly what they were referencing I find that truly offensive. Jeez Xander 🙁 Its actually random though cause I always wondered what he was talking about and then you have Anya who is like "Thats still funny Xand"

Agreed. it is pretty offensive!
I love how they always pay homage to pop culture with lines like that. 🙂 Like the line in "What's My Line part 2" when Xander was like "I am the bug man, coo coo cachoo" in homage to the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus". 😉

I read it on IMDb a while ago.
It made me laugh.
There are a lot of suggestive quotes throughout the Buffyverse.
"Can I deny you three times?" Oh, Spike.
As for pop culture: "Back off, Pink Ranger."
This is obviously a Power Ranger reference. <3
"Thanks for the tip, Nostradamus." That crazy old man.
"I am like Vegeta. I used to be a pure Saiyan, and now I fight on the side of Goku." <3 Andrew. That nerd cracked me up.

I'm sure there's loads I haven't noticed. This one I don't feel bad about since I've never seen Magnolia.

I never got that one! First, I blamed my English skills, but after watching it in German I still didn't get it. Now that I know what it refers to, I actually find it really funny :lmao:
Yup, I'm immature like that.

lol, as if anyone ever got *any* reference from the German dub. heck, from the dub I didn't even realize the S6 opener was supposed to be a KNOCK KNOCK JOKE! stupid dubbers.
I've never known about where that quote came from before. But I sure thought he's talking about sex as soon as I saw the donut. /me has dirty mind. 😀

LOL me too. THe reference just confirms what I was already thinking.
I had heard about the Magnolia reference before, but I've never seen the movie... I probably never will 'cause I don't like Tom Cruise that much. LOL

I got the reference but I never understood what a "cruller" was until I went to vegas and saw some.

Look!

I forgot about that line until I saw that this thread had new posts. And I burst into laughter. Oh, Xander, you silly fella.

Joss says it's a Magnolia reference in the commentary for OMWF. 😛
And I don't wanna believe the parody thing about the episode. *covers eyes and hums* lol

What is a cruller? (And I don't mean what it is in the reference!)

I see from QC's pic it says it's glazed donut, is that the only difference between it and a donut?

Having read the word donut so many times, it's made me realize I haven't had a donut in yonks, and now really want one, lol!

Bahahaha, never got it either, but now it's kind of funny.

Oh, Xander.
