Question Respect

As far as respect goes, if we are talking reallife i will be polite, but not respect them, They have to earn that, but online is different. Its kind of hard to have respect for people you have no idea what they are really like.

Yea, respect online is a toughie because you really do only get such a limited view of someone.

I am very respectful of everyone I meet. Mommy taught me well.

Except for me! LOL!

I have a general respect for everyone I meet. Unfortunately I'm kind of a masochist and I forgive people easily making excuses for them that they don't deserve. However I do have my threshold for abuse. Oddly when it comes to work I'll be utterly respectful to a customer right up to the point where they become rude or disrespectful to me...then I go off like a banshee. I don't tolerate disrespect from people I don't know. And if it's directed against a friend or family it has the potential to get physical.

I think everyone should get respect unless they really dont deserve it(i mean extreme cases)
but, it seems in life if you want respect, like if you dont have it, you gotta take it!

Interesting, why do you say that? Would it offend you that the othe girl is younger than you? Or that you hadn't been told right away?

Nothing to do with age really. I only mentioned that because he was older than me, and I'm 22. So.. I don't know, it just comes across as quite sleazy, chatting up a young girl and knocking her up when you're supposed to be with someone else.

Would you respect someone if they had cheated on you, and not had the balls to tell you for 8 months? I find it really hard generally to respect cheats, even friends that have cheated, it's a really shady thing to do to someone.

I'm with you on that. I HATE everything about cheating!

I guess I understand that. My assumption when I read your original comment was that he had dumped you for her, not that you were still together when it happened.

I have 0 respect for people that cheat and I believe once a cheater always a cheater so I don't forgive or date them either.

I don't agree with that. People change, and people cheat for a lot of different reasons.
I've cheated on someone once, I cheated on him because I was at the lowest point I've ever been in my life and he was beating me...this may not sound like an excuses but for the first time in 2 years someone was being nice to me, I just wanted to feel something.
I do not ever want to cheat again. I learnt my lesson and so do many others.

Cheating can be forgiven. Beating is a whole different matter. I'm glad you got away.
As Silum stated there's different kinds of respect but I won't get into that now. I hate the fact but I can be really judgemental. I've been judged myself by people that once they got to know me changed their minds completely. But the thoughts might come anyway. I do try and ignore my initial thoughts and treat everyone with respect until they don't deserve it but sometimes I fail for different reasons. And sometimes I try to be even more respectful (and caring) to people that I don't think deserve it. Not easy but who knows what a little kindness can do to some people.

Respekt avler respekt. :-)
I start off respecting everyone. I mean, to me, respect is the most fundamental ideal in all human interactions.
I don't feel like I should have to prove myself worthy or whatever for people to treat me respectfully, and I don't feel that anyone else should have to prove themselves to me.
We're all people, we all deserve that level of basic respect.

However, respect CAN be lost. And I tend to hold grudges, so it's difficult to get it back.

many people tend to be rude or try to belittle others on-line, w/o provocation or reason. I've encountered it on this MB as well.

that's basically what the ignore option is for.

Arguing with a faceless entity is a waste of valuable energy and time.

Very true!
I try to be respectful of everyone. If someone proves they don't deserve my respect, I don't go out of my way to be rude to them, mostly I'm just indifferent towards them. Although if them being disrespectful hurts someone I care about I do get a little aggressive!

I only respect people who agree with me word for word on everything. If you can't do that, I know without question that you're completely closed-minded. You should probably buy me stuff too.

Oh God, I thought you were serious until I read the last sentence.

hahaha

I was raised to believe that every man is a gentleman and every woman is a lady until they prove themselves to be otherwise; that neither respect nor trust have to be earned, but DISrespect and MIStrust most certainly can be; that neither race nor gender is an automatic character reference; that life is a sacred thing, and should never be taken without just cause; and that that wisdom and education are totally different things, neither one dependent upon the other.

If my children can say the same thing a decade or two or many, I'll be a happy mother.
Hmm.. I gues both.
I do respect people unless I realise that they don't deserve it but they can win the respect back to prove that they deserve it. I guess it's a little complicated

I see myself as pretty easy going I try and be open minded and treat people equally. If someone does soemthing to upset me then I try to just not let it get to me so respect does not really come into it! For me to really respect someone then I suppose they would have to be some who really trys to be a good person or helps others.

To be honest I dont really even know what the word means anymore. Its banded around so much . What does someone have to do to earn and be respected!

I was watching a programme the other day about young gangs and knife crime etc and some ex gang memebers were being interviewed, they were asked what would cause someone to stab another and they said it is all about respect. If they felt they were disrespected by someone they would feel they would have to harm them in some way. To them being disprespected can be something as silly as someone giving them a dirty look!

I know its going a little off topic, but what i am trying to say is what is repect?

Hope I am making sense?
