Restless riddles

i just wanted to know what all of the little clues they say in restless really mean, they must mean something and i cant figure them out.

like in willows dream they keep on saying 'don't worry nobodys gonna know the truth' - what is the truth?

and in xanders dream he keeps on getting lost

and in giles dream he says a lot 'i know you'

and whats with buffys 'i'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back?' what does that mean. and why is anya begging buffy to wake up.

i really like this ep but i wish i knew what this all meant?
 
There are a lot of mixed messages in this episode, which is why its my number one favourite episode, becuase no matter how many times you watch it, it leaves you wondering, and if your lucky, you'll figure something new out.
I really, really dont know about the certain aspects of the dream you've posted to before, but that adds to the mystery.
Ive never really thought about the characters situations in their dreams, but focused more on what they say, like for example, Buffy calls Xander her brother, could this mean she sees him as a brother? Could he be talking about something else? Who knows? I dont, and I dont think Joss does either, he wrote it, doesnt mean he knows everything about what he's written.
There are plently of clues throughout the episode, which later develop into episodes, like for ecample, Tabula Rasa.
Spike and Giles are on the swings, talking about the fact that Giles is teaching Spike to be a Watcher, and Giles says Spike's like a son to him, in Tabula Rasa, when they loose they're memories, Spike believes Giles is his dad. Theres also talk of a shark, and Spike says, 'and on land' another refrence to Tabula Rasa where Spike owes a shark-demon-man-thingy some kittens or something.
Very weird episode, but at the same time, fantastic!
 
This is an absolutely fantastic deconstruction of the episode and the many meanings within it. Hope it helps, and shows how stunningly written and directed this episode is! 😀
 
In the "Restless" audio commentary, Joss explains everything.

- The reason Giles start speaking French is to show that Xander feels like everyone moves on without him, that he's left behind and can't keep up.

- Xander gets lost and always ends up in the basement because he's afraid that how ever far he gets in life, that's where he'll always end up.

- Willow is woried that everyone will find out that maybe she's still the shy, nerdy girl she was in S1. Over the years, she's grown more confident and she wonders if that is just a mask or a costume (thus, the play). That's why Buffy takes off her "costume" and the Willow from S1 is revealed.

- I think Buffy's "I wanna be a fireman" thing is just Joss's homage to dreams. Dreams don't always make sense. Thus, the cheese man. Or maybe Buffy's saying she wants to do a normal job when she's done being the Slayer... I don't know.
 
Foreshadowing in Restless

I hope this hasn't been posted already. ::mmm::

Did anyone notice all the foreshadowing that was in Restless? Here are a few that I found that could more or less be percieved as foreshadowing.

-spike swinging on the swings with Giles, wearing a suit. could be foreshadowing the episode where everyone forgets who they are because of Willow's spell
-Tara saying "be back before Dawn". could be foreshadowing the Dawn's arrival to the show.
-Buffy putting the mud on her face. it went to that weird thing where there everything got all bright. it kinda looked to me like the colors from "The Gift"
-Tara saying "who you are. whats to come" could really be foreshadowing anything.

did you guys pick up anything?

Also...as somebody pointed out to me in a recent thread...

The clock said 7:30, to which Tara said the clock was wrong..
In Graduation Day, Faith talks about the big 7-3-0...which was how many days were left till Buffy's death...
When Restless rolled around, there were only 365, so the clock was wrong.
I also think Xander not being able to understand Anya was a bit of foreshadowing of there relationship...and the way Giles treated Buffy....which ended up being very close to the way he treated her at the end of s5 and again in mid season 7....
 
yeah i noticed most of that (after many many viewings!) anya's "i'm thinking about getting back into vengance again" i am sure was foreshadowing for s6.
 
Something seemed weird about the Anya one, but now that I think about it, it seems like it was foretelling her revengeance thing. and the whole clock thing kinda confuses me, but I think I know what you're talking about lol
 
When Tara said the whole You think you know who you are whats to come bit, Dracula also says it in well Buffy vs. Dracula.

Problem is, you cant have 3:65 on a clock
 
Oh yeah. LoL. That's right. A clock can't say 3:65.

I remember that Giles said something about "Blood of the lamb" that could be in reference to Dawn's blood and the ritual.

and in Buffy's dream, Buffy's talking to Tara and she says "I'm never gunna use it." when they're talking about the first slayer. that's an obvious one i think.
 
Well, duh, I'm saying that the theory that it was 730 days til Dawn's arrival was wrong...yeah, the clock was wrong, but for obvious reasons like...there being no such time as 3:65...blah blah blah and for a change of pace, blah...

I just watched this, woo-hoo!
Does anyone think that maybe Olivia pushing around the stroller at the carnival (Gile's dream) was also foreshadowing of Dawn?
 
It mightve but if you if want a certain answer, watch it with the commentary on since Joss would probably say if it was
 
I liked how it told about Willow's problems and foreshadowed her going evil in season 6. Part of the magic addiction was what she explained to Buffy in Wrecked about not wanting to feel like the nerd she was in high school but to be different, her own kind of superhero like Buffy was. In Restless Buffy rips off her "costume" and she's back in high school. Also Tara says to Willow that she can't help her or something, that she won't be there, and at the end of season 6 she's not. Also Giles leaving in season 6 foreshadowed with Giles saying he has "a gig himself you know", and that he needs to get around to doing things, plus Olivia being there.
