Restless riddles

I noticed what you guys noticed, only with the help of Joss Whedon's "Restless" commentary.

The bed was made for Dawn.
7:30 is sooooo not about Dawn's arrival. When Faith had said counting down from 7-3-0 in GDP2, she ment that in exactly two years from then, Buffy will die.
"What you are, what's to come" is about S5 as Buffy is trying to find out WHAT she is.
 
I'm glad i read this page now, cause i didnt have a clue about them dreams.. lol! that cheese man was freaky... lol. I like the part when the first slayer started stabbing buffy and Buffy was like 'I am going to ignore you, and you are going to go away' lol
 
Was i the only one to spot the connection with the prophecy type thing with faith in season 3, graduation day part 1 and in season four where they both prophecise the coming of dawn and the death of buffy.
in season four faith sed to buffy, lots to do b4 lil sis comes, or something like that.
in season three she says something like little miss muffet counting down 7-3-0 which in terms of days 730 is 2 years, and in season 5 a crazy man calls dawn curds and whey- linked to miss muffet.
in the final episode of season four buffy looks at a clock that says 730 but says its the wrong time, this is cos in graduation day they where counting 730 days until buffys death but since then a year has passed meaning that buffy no longer has 2 years left, she has a year.

Good stuff! I noticed the stuff about lil' sis, but I never noticed the 730 stuff. I've watched these episodes a million times too. Good eye!
 
I love this episode aswell...A way to get into all their heads, and know their fears and dreams and everything. And I have to say that they managed to dream like feeling very well, my dreams are just like that. Weird things that make no sense, and some weird things that does have some kind of meaning.
 
I got the whole Little Sister thing, I watched Season 5-7 before I watched this episode, so its easy if your looking out for it. I told my sis that and she said she woulda never got it if we watched it in the right order.
I love working out the riddles of dreams, Alot of the times my dreams are connected before Im born strangely enough.. And I never heard when she said she wanted to be a fireman, when was that??
Also thats smart that Tabula Rosa thing, wonder if that was porposly of the writers??
 
PREDICTIONS
Ever since this episode first aired, Buffy fans have been trying to work out if any of the dreams contained any predictions for future episodes. Several things have come to pass since the first airing of Restless, and are listed below. I admit that some may seem more tenuous than others!

Buffy vs Dracula:
1. Olivia's pregnancy in Giles' dream may signify the coming of Dawn. Giles became a father figure to Buffy's sister.
2. Tara says "Be back before Dawn." This is a reference to Buffy's younger sister Dawn who made her debut in the very next episode. (Thanks to Daro).
3. Tara also says "You think you know...what you are ... what's to come. You haven't even begun." In the season five opener, Dracula repeats this to Buffy.

The Replacement:
Buffy dreams that she's was sleeping in her dorm room bed then 'wakes up' in her bed at her family house. In the next season, she leaves the dorm to move back home.

Family:
Tara tells Willow she doesn't know everything about her. In season five's Family we discover Tara has been hiding a secret that she believes she's a demon of some kind.

Into the Woods:
Buffy dreams that Riley says to her, "I thought you were looking for your friends. Fine, if that's the way you want it, you're on your own, killer." Riley leaves Buffy in the episode Into the Woods.

The Gift:
The number 730 returns from Graduation Day, Part Two. At that point, the number signified the numbers of days before Buffy died in season five's The Gift. Here, Buffy sees a clock saying 7:30 and Tara says that the clock is wrong. This means that there are no longer 730 days before Buffy's death.

Bargaining, Part One:
Giles dreams that he must choose between Buffy, who represents Sunnydale and Olivia, who represents his life in England. He chooses England in season six.

Once More with Feeling:
In Willow's dream, Giles says "Stay in character...especially in the musical numbers!" There is of course the musical episode in season six.

Tabula Rasa:
1. Spike wears tweed like Giles' in Xander's dream. Giles says he's teaching Spike to be just like him. "Spike's like a son to me." Spike wears the tweed again in Tabula Rasa and, after losing his memory, believes Giles is his father.
2. Xander says, "Like a shark with feet and ... much less fins", Spike then added, "And on land!" In Tabula Rasa the bad guy is a literal "loan shark" who is a shark who walks on land and has fins. (Thanks to Chip)

Hell's Bells:
Xander's father yells, "What the hell is wrong with you? You won't come upstairs? What are you ... ashamed of us? Your mother's crying her guts out!" In Hell's Bells, Xander leaves Anya at the altar, scared he will become a terrible husband like his father. His mother cries in that episode.

Entropy:
Anya says, "I've been thinking about getting back into vengeance." She does, and we see the effects in season six's Entropy.

Lessons:
Snyder says to Xander, "I walked by your guidance counsellor's office one time. A bunch of you were sitting there ... waiting to be shepherded." Buffy becomes a guidance counsellor at the school in season seven's Lessons, and for a few episodes there after. Snyder's remarks probably signify how Xander feels about Buffy's role as leader of the Scoobies.

Get it Done:
1. Buffy meets the First Slayer in a desert. She's back in the same desert with the Shadowmen in Get it Done.
2. When Buffy dreams that she wakes up, she sees the First Slayer chained to the ceiling. In Get it Done, we learn that Shadowmen 'made' the first Slayer by chaining her to the ground.
3. Buffy tells Adam "We're not demons." She discovers in Get it Done that the first Slayer was made by being given a demon's heart.
4. Giles says to Spike, "I still think Buffy should have killed you." He hopes this again most obviously in season seven, when he sets Spike up to be killed by Principal Wood.
5. The bag from which Buffy gets the mud is actually given to her in reality by Principal Wood in Get it Done.

Chosen:
The First Slayer tells Buffy that as a Slayer she'll always be alone. These words are said again in season seven's finale Chosen and trigger Buffy's idea of how to attack the First's army

I have been so confused about this episode ever since I saw it for the first time! I always thought that the finale of a season was when the 'bad guy' got his come-uponce from Buffy. But then this ep was showed right after 'Prime evil.' The only thing I noticed was the thing about Dawn, the rest has just filled in ALOT of blanks. THANKS EVERYONE!
 
restless was not the season final. it was the incredible cherry on top 😛

"primeval" was the final as it wrapped the story of season 4.
 
actually that makes a very good sense as both the mud and what she took out of wood's bag connect her to the first slayer and the source of the power.
 
"When the floods roll back, I'm gonna be a fireman"
I thought that foreshadowed season 7. When the power got shared, she got to be a normal girl.

It seems that "I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back" is the most enigmatic line in the whole episode. And maybe the idea that, at the end she got to be a 'normal girl' is a good explaination, except that 'fireman' isn't exactly the most 'normal' profession.

Firemen are heroes, like Buffy, so I always thought that the line was a comment on Buffy's personality. I think that even after there are other Slayers all over the world, that Buffy, just thanks to her personality, would still feel like she had to help people. Not because she has to, any more, but just because she's Buffy. After all, in "Helpless", even after she's lost her powers, she tries to help Cordelia, and she rushes to save her mother without a thought. And the job that she enjoys, (after the horrifying DoubleMeat Palace) is as a counselor, helping the kids at Sunnydale High. It seems that no matter what Buffy does, she always find herself being a hero. And I think that this line just illustrates that.

And, just because I like it: Here's a rolling hamster! Hee hee!! :nibble6: So sorry..anywho...
 
I read that in Restless Tara's voice was originally going to be Angel's and the girl pushing the baby carriage with Giles was going to be Ms. Calendar but they weren't available for the shooting.

Not true. Remember the "weapons bag"? Kathy finds it in Buffy's closet during "Living Conditions". This is the bag full of mud in Restless. The "weapons bag" is black, with a clearly defined structure (like an old lady's purse) and two stiff handles. The "slayer keepsake" bag is brown and kind of...floppy. Almost as if someone just wrapped leather around the contents and stuck handles on. This makes a lot more sense, since Buffy has never seen the "Get It Done" slayer keepsake bag, and therefore, her subconcious couldn't have pulled it into her dream. After all, if you think about it, there is nothing in the dreams that the characters are unfamiliar with, except the First Slayer. The Bronze, the graveyard, classroom, Tara's room, Buffy's house, Spike, Tara, these are all familiar locations and people. Even the desert is conceivable to Buffy's mind, because she has seen a desert before, if not that particular desert. But to depict a specific bag that the dreamer has never seen before would be beyond a regular dream.

It would have to be a "Slayer dream" or a prophectic dream and there is little to no evidence that Buffy's dream is at all like the other "Slayer" dreams we have seen before (Welcome to the Hellmouth, which predicted the Harvest, and Surprise, which predicted Angel's "death" and the return of Angelus.) It does not predict some dire event that will happen soon. Instead it is more like a regular dream (although a dream in which a primal force is trying to kill you can hardly be called regular!) which often can seem to "predict" or at least foreshadow actual events. (I believe that even regular people's dreams can sometimes "predict" at least the way the dreamer will react to a situation).

It's normal enough for a feminist show. What would be considered a normal job? If she said she'd be a teacher or something? I think what I said before is wrong though, the power getting shared part. "When the floods roll back" probably means something more like when the evil stops coming: i.e. the hellmouth being closed. :lightning
Fireman is a normal profession because it's a job in the normal world compared to devoting her life to slaying demons. And that could speak to her personality if she literally meant she'd be a fireman but I think that line was metaphorical.

I didn't mean to say that fireman isn't a normal profession, because you're right, compared to slaying demons, it is. What I meant was to say that fireman are heroes, and that this line might illustrate how Buffy is always going to be a hero, no matter how much she tries to run from it.
