Has Joss or anyone else involved with the show ever given any indication as to just exactly why Spike became a regular beginning with Season 4? Hopefully, it was something more interesting than that Buffy just had to continue having a resident vampire who, for whatever reason, Buffy wouldn't stake.

Because he was such a firm fan favourite?
actually he was supposed to die in S2, & let the Big Bad of the season be only Angelus & Dru, I don't remember which episode but one of them made JW like Spike. so he decided to let him live in case of future plans.
JW decided to make Spike a regular in S4 after "Lovers Walk".
Angel was supposed to appear on only the 2 pilot episodes of the show, but he liked Angel & decided to keep him.
Angel wasn't supposed to return after S2, but DB performance of Angelus "scared" JW, or so he said.
JW decided to make a spin-off of Angel somewhere in the middle of S3, he thought Angel was a very deep character, & he was wasted as a supporting character.

can you imagine the Buffyverse without Angel & Spike? I don't even like to think about it.

Buffy without Angel and Spike would have been a much poorer show, so glad he didn't kill off Spike and allowed Angel to carry on his story and move to LA.

Marsters has also said that he was brought in to be snarky after they moved Cordelia to AtS. JW wanted someone who told everyone they were idiots and generally made fun of people. Spike ended up fulfilling the role very well. So well in fact they brought him in to replace Cordelia once again on Angel.

HAH. That's amusing.
I believe it was DB's acting in "I Only Have Eyes For You" (Seaosn 2) when Joss realized this guy could carry his own show. 🙂

my info isn't accurate, but I know that JW's decision to make the spin-off was in S3, I think the episode you mentioned was when JW decided to bring back Angel in S3.
though am still not 100% sure, I haven't read those in years.

Nope the only reason Angel was brought back is because of his own show. I'm pretty sure he was going to stay 'dead' otherwise, but I Only Have Eyes For You convinced Joss to give him AtS.

On topic: Everyone loved Spike. It's the reason he wasn't killed off after the only two or three episodes he was originally supposed to be in.

I think Joss made the right decision 😉

Thank you. Joss did say that. It was in a featurette on the S2 discs for BtVS.
