Joss posted at Whedonesque.com, and dropped a bunch of bombshells.

There will be a new comic book, canon, trilogy on Serenity from Joss and Brett Matthews.

There will be a new Dark Horse Comic from Joss himself that will be canon, and go into the Buffy in Italy with the Immortal story.

They're still working towards an actual Spike movie.

OMG!!!!!! N4H you rock, I am so excited for the Buffy one, I have been waiting for something from Joss Post-Chosen!!! And I have not read the Serenity comics (I plan on) But I am still excited. Thanks for this news!!!!
 
Thanks for the update... this is great news! I'm really happy with more canonical comics! We'll still have to see whether the Spike movie works out, but we at least have a few things to look out to for certain.
 
Woo...and indeed...Hoo! Things are looking up for the Buffyverse and I have to buy more comics. Life is good🙂
 
I'm REALLY interested in the "more" thing he mentioned. Y'know, that "the Buffyverse will continue in the form of comics, the Spike movie and MORE" thing!

Yeah, I thought there was another little piece of possibly buried significance in Joss's post too.

You know, how he made a point of proclaiming the new Buffy comic he was writing solo would be canon, but didn't make the same claim for the Serenity comics he was co-writng? Does that mean anything?
 
So are the Firefly/Serenity comics in essence Serenity 2 and 3 or are they just continuations, just in case there are sequels?

Will we see The Immortal, or more importantly, any of the other scoobies? Damn cryptic, I hate cryptic. And I don't think I can spell it.

Love how he dubbed Amy in Alias "AMIAS", knew there was a reason I loved his writing.

No mention of Veronica Mars though, no "Car Rental Clerk" spin-off? Damn.

He said the comics would take place during the show. So I'd take that to mean it would be like another one of those unaired episodes. Or a Christmas special.

At a guess i would assume that anything Joss himself does in the Firefly/Serenity universe will be considered canon, no matter the format. If for no other reason, simply because the printed format will likely be the only place he now can tell tales from that 'verse.
 
Well, I guess this means that I'll have to start reading the comics. I want the verse to continue!

A "canon" story is one that is confirmed to take place within the storyline of the television series.

For example, many of the novels written about Buffy are based on the tv show, but are not actually part of the series because the story may contradict events seen onscreen. They would not be considered canon.

This new comic series will be an official continuation of what happened in the series, and anything that happens therein will be accurate and sanctioned by Joss himself. Therefore, canon.

That make sense? 🙂

Yeah, most of the novels are not considered canon, but I remember reading that Queen of the Slayers was considered canon. I think in the Buffy magazine. I'm going to look it up and see.

Does anybody know?

I'd really like to see that quote. Me, I'd never even heard of Queen of the slayers until just now. What's Joss's connection to it? The last I heard Joss was saying he didn't even read the books.

Hey, here's something that could be cool, I think. You know how people are sometimes wondering about stuff like how could there be multiple slayers at the end of Chosen, but Fray goes back to a single slayer line? Joss has promised to make sense of discrepancies like that in some future project. I hope this new Buffy and the Immortal comic is the one where all is explained.

That would be freakin Awesome!!!!!! I hope he does!!

I have herd of QoTS but it is not Cannon, Nancy went and watched season 5 of Angel to get all the mentions to the Scobies, I think the Magazine says she asked Joss about the Book, but he does not have a connection to it, and it is not Canon.

Okay, I've just looked it up in Buffy Magazine #20. The article discusses the connection between the book and what Joss might have written. It directly says this:
Considering that the book definitely covers territory that Joss may someday go back and cover in his own continuation of the mythology, Nancy says there were conversations between all parties on what could be covered in the novel. "I definitely had input", she deatils

So, with that quote, I'm not sure. I could see where it might be considered canon, because Joss had input... but I'm not sure it was enough and is 100% considered canon. As with the other novels, I think the writers were encouraged to use their own imagination and tell a story outside of the original canon stories, and therefore the novels are not canon.

Hmm. So, then the things is, that if there is going to be a Buffy "Season 8" in some way, shape or form, how will it sit with those who have read this book?
