Revelations From Joss at Whedonesque

Hey, here's something that could be cool, I think. You know how people are sometimes wondering about stuff like how could there be multiple slayers at the end of Chosen, but Fray goes back to a single slayer line? Joss has promised to make sense of discrepancies like that in some future project. I hope this new Buffy and the Immortal comic is the one where all is explained.

I really hope that something happens along those lines. I have a theory about how that occurs which ties together plotlines from Buffy, Angel and Fray (not sure if i have ever mentioned that here or not, could have been at Whedonesque) and i would love to see if Joss is thinking along the same lines as me.

Ooh, wouldn't that be neat. You have an idea about what you'd like to see, and then BAM, it happens. It would be like you and Joss were the same person! That would be cool. You would be thinking 'great minds think alike' 🙂

Yep, coming up with the same idea that Joss later decides to go with for one of his stories, THAT i could live with! 😀

I just thought of something, and David Krumholtz fans might enjoy this: Joss said his new Serenity comic would take place during the series, meaning Firefly. We never learned during Serenity how the crew met Mr. Universe, (who, if we've seen Serenity, was played by David Krumholtz). Well, couldn't they have met during an episode that didn't make the DVDs? Or during a Christmas special?

In other words, a story that got told in a comic book.

I also hope they connect the dots between the series and the movie. Mr. Universe, and also how did Book and Inara get separated from the crew exactly. Stuff like that.

On whether or not the Nancy Holder books are canon or not, is that the only quote? Can we look at that again?

I think Inara's leaving was pretty strongly hinted in the series, where it was a done deal, except for the actual leaving. I'm actually kinda satisfied there.

As for Book's story, and the mystery surrounding the preacher who knows things no preacher should know (including shooting down spaceships): the comic's only going to be a 3-parter and I'd like to see his story told a little more fully than that.

I'm just reporting what I read. But, yes the more I think about it, the more I think it's going to suck for those of us who have read this book. Because so much happens, dealing with the events after season seven, and now the comic is coming out with probably a conflicting storyline, years after everyone thought the verse was dead and buried. It just irritates me, that's all. I totally understand what you're saying N4H. Joss is the final word, and considering he has never had any input on novels, this is probably the same situation.

BTW here's a more exact idea of some of the stuff Joss has had to say on the subject -

"There is so much product, you have to give up control. I don't read the books. Not because I don't want to, I just don't have the time. In the very beginning we set down some guidelines [for the books and comics]. Things like 'no cheesecake.' That was about the extent of it."

If my name's going to be on it, it should be mine. Now, the books I have nothing to do with, and I've never read them. They could be, "Buffy realized that abortion was wrong!" and I would have no idea. So, after my big, heartfelt, teary speech, I realize that I was once again lying. But I sort of drew the line. I was like, "I can't possibly read these books!" But my name just goes on them as the person who created Buffy.

Couldn't agree more. I've never had any interest in reading the numerous Buffy season 8 or Angel season 6 fanfics, simply because whatever is written is just that particular writer's wishes for what might have happened. We all have our own ideas and wishes in that respect but it doesn't make them accurate or true. The only person that can decide that is Joss, as the Buffyverse is his creation. If he doesn't make the choice that Buffy does this, Spike does that or Xander eats cheesecake on Friday nights then it has no relevance to me.

Same goes for the novels. Joss doesn't write them and has no real say in what happens to the characters. Sure, some of the stories have very interesting premises and i've read the odd review of certain novels where i've thought that the premise of the book would make a damn good story in the true Buffyverse. Until Joss writes that story though, it ain't canon!

The recent Serenity comics do show Book and Inara leaving the crew, as I recall, but I can't remember any mention of Mr Universe - I'll have to re-read them - they do bridge the gap between show and film quite nicely. I'm hoping that I haven't totally misunderstood the comics news posted above and that there are going to be more Firefly comics in addition to the Serenity movie tie-in multi-cover extravaganza that I'm talking about here 🙂

N4H, I was actually trying to agree with you! 🙂 I might not have come out in say it, but I was agreeing. Just wanted to point that out!

I was reading the new issue of the Buffy and Angel Mag, and they have confirmed that Tim Minear is doing the Spike Movie, and that Amy Acker has been approached about reprising the role of Illyria, They say that all they are waiting on is James to agree, But I have read in loads of Places that James wants to do it, so what the bloody hell are they waiting for!!!

Don't believe everything you read, BEG, especially not in the magazines because they have a habit of being either entirely wrong or, at the very least, they tend to be very out of date with their information, simply because of the restrictions of when they have to go to press.

The facts are that yes, Tim Minear is onboard for the Spike movie and yes, Amy Acker has been approached about returning to the character of Illyria in the movie but it is far from a done deal and James agreeing is not the deciding factor.

James has said that he will be willing to do the movie (in a given timeframe of the next three to four years or so) but the fact is that it's the financial issues that are now having to be arranged. Once money matters are agreed then Joss can move onto confirming the cast and crew specifics.
