One of the most widely criticized Buffy seasons both by critics and fans alike is season 7. I happen to agree with this overall criticism. With that in mind, it is quite obvious season 7 has left many of us dissatisfied. I'm sure many of us wish we could change it,and there have been similar threads proposing "basic" changes to season 7,however this leaves much to the imagination of the reader. So, what I would like is for each person to post a detailed outline of season 7 as "you" would have done it. The only rule is seasons 1-6 (every episode) are canon. Other than that feel free to make it what ever you want, but be specific. I want a vision from each of you that gives us all a clear image of what season 7 would be had you been put in charge of it. Have fun 🙂

More Giles.
More Faith.
More Scoobies.
Make The First a lot more intelligent and sneaky. The fact that it could appear as Buffy should've meant that it could've sown seeds of doubt in the ranks of the good guys.
Willow either shouldn't have had a love interest at all or she should've been with an established character (probably Faith?).
No Principal Wood- he gave Spike yet another plot line. Spike had enough with the whole soul/trigger/crazy stuff going on- that was plenty.
Introduce Caleb a little sooner and forget about the ubervamps (or at least don't make the first one really tough and then the others dropping like flies- keep them as a tough new type of vamp for Buffy to fight, tough but not unkillable.)
Have the potentials but flesh out a few of the more interesting ones (Vi, Amanda).
Make it so the first undemines Buffy's belief in herself and its everyone else that convinces her that only she can lead them. (Not just Spike!)
Kill Kennedy and Molly (much sooner!)😀

That is all.
But really I still like this season more than 6- that's pretty much unsavable.

Agreed on season 6 being irredeemable
NO POTENTIALS.... If there were no potentials I would LOVE, LOVE this season. Those bitcas ruin it for me. And the idea with bringing Tara back? YES. No scoobies fighting Buffy, that breaks my heart. Yes to all of them showing how "there's nothing they can't face" and they defeat the first together. I think they should have strengthened their relationships in this season not weaken them!

Caleb would have come to town as the new high school principal. He would be charming, friendly, and helpful, winning the trust of Buffy and her friends almost from the moment that they met. No one has any idea that he is an agent of the First Evil.

Spike would have returned in somewhat better control of himself, and try and apologize to Buffy and her friends for his previous actions, but his restored soul wouldn't have been revealed for several more episodes.

Robin Wood, a dedicated vampire hunter, would have come to town with full knowledge that Spike was his mother's killer, and would have made no secret about his intentions to seek revenge for her death (whether or not she was a Slayer would have been irrelevant) Giles and the Scoobies would be totally supportive of his mission, but Buffy would be somewhat reluctant to help, sensing something strange in Spike since his return to Sunnydale, and would even eventually stop him (That would be when the truth about Spike's soul would be revealed) which would put her in opposition to her friends.

Faith would have come to town several episodes earlier than she actually did (how her presence there, as well as her involvement with the events on "Angel" would have to be resolved differently) Giles and the Scoobies would try to get her to stop Buffy from protecting Spike, but she would refuse, insisting that "B knows what she's doing." Because of her support, Buffy and Faith are able to resolve their differences and become friends once more.

Giles and the Scoobies fake an emergency to distract Buffy while Wood tries to stake Spike, and he almost succeeds before Faith shows up and kicks the mortal crap out of him, telling him to leave Sunnydale and never come back.

Caleb reveals his true mission on Sunnydale by trying to recruit Wood, who refuses to cooperate and gets eaten by an ubervamp for his trouble.

As the big final battle approaches, Angel shows up in town with the amulet designed to save the day. He wears it inti the hellmouth and is incinerated, Buffy, Spike, and the Scoobies escape.

The war over, Buffy, to everyone's surprise, tells spike that she loves him, to which he replies, "It's about tim you figured that out." Faith, Giles, and the Scoobies stand around cheering as Buffy and Spike kiss with such passion that their lips start to sizzle.

The End.....

I would see that Season 7 though I do have mixed feelings about Angel's fate, being a fan of the Angel finale.
More Spike. More Scoobies. Less Potentials.

Having Caleb in the story much, much earlier (I understand that he appeared on BtVS only because Firefly was canceled, but still...)

A big, fat crossover: Buffy finding out about Connor, Dawn and Connor bonding.

Basic breakdown

1 - 5 : Willow comes back episode one, then 4 episode of scooby monster of the week, Dawn starts school, suspicious of Wood, hints about slayers dying.
5 - 10 : ep 5 Giles shows up with the 3 slayers, couple of episode on them and slayers dying and the Anya episode and a Xander episode, beljoxs (sp?) eye in there somehwere
11 : first slayer killed under Buffys protection, Spike comes back, episode is also midseason finale.
12-13 : Spike/Caleb mystery
14 : Willow episode
15 - 20 : Andrew episode in there somewhere, Get it Done, Faith comes back, Faith leader and Buffy leaving episodes
21 -22 : Two hour finale, Angels brings amulet, assault on Hellmouth

Full breakdown:

Way less Spike, about 1/3 (maybe less) the amount of time he got, season 7's biggest problem for me. He shouldn't have come back till after the potentials are established, let Buffy, Xander and Willow reform and bond, then give them the problem of the potentials, then bring in Spike to destabilise Buffy, both emotionally and as a leader to the potentials who wonder why she's working with a vampire.

More scooby stories.

Woods mother wouldn't have been killed by Spike, but was still a slayer.

More focus on Kennedy, Molly, Vi, Rona and Amanda making them the face of the potentials for us, let us get to know them as characters not just what they were.

Still have Molly killed off, and bring in Amanda the same way through a Dawn story.

Bring Spike and Caleb in at the same time, (about half way through) and I wouldn't have made it so clear he got his soul back at the end of season 6. Then start killing off the potentials, by Caleb, but give the possibility it was Spike. Have him claiming he got a soul, but potentials are dying, the scoobies and the viewers dont know if he got the chip removed or a soul at the end of season 6, make that a 3 episode arc - the first ep has a potential killed have them discover there is an agent of the Firsts in Sunnydale, and in the last moment of the episode have Spike return, which would be the mid season cliffhanger.
Episode 2 he tells Buffy he got his soul back they deal with BUFFYS side of her attempted rapist coming back, another potential dies, everyone starts to suspect Spike as he just got back, but Buffy believes him, episode 3 have everyone ready to stake Spike, with Buffy defending him. Have the scoobies and Buffy go head to head with Buffy not wanting to Stake him and her saying she doesn't think it's him and wanting to look into it more, then reveal Caleb.

After that arc, let Spike sink back into the background like Anya, have Willow, Xander, Giles and Buffy together but clearly a bit of tension between them for a couple of episodes, I'd have Willow leave and bring back Faith the exact same way, and still build to the attack on the vineyard, the defeat and Buffy wanting to try again then deciding to leave as they want a different leader.
I wouldn't have had Spike comfort Buffy like he did, I know particular people love it, but it's very misleading, it seems to have made people think Buffy was right when she was wrong and she acknowledges that - even though she acknowledges that people still see those episodes as Buffy kicked out of the house, which isn't what happened, and see her as right, which she wasn't, so I'd still have Spike go to her and boost her confidence, but I'd have made it more subtle, and I'd have Buffy acknowledge she was wrong when she gets control over the group after Faith leads them into a trap (I'd have that play out the same way)

I wouldn't have had the Willow turning into Warren episode, I dont care she killed him, and I dont think she does either, so no need to make her feel any remorse for him in any way, it also allowed her to move on too fast, I dont mean in general, just that it was slow building till that episode then after that she was practically changing her facebook status to in a relationship, so I'd have done away with that catalyst and let Willow and Kennedy build slowly, never actually declare themselves girlfriends, but making it quite clear in the last episodes that they were.

The episode Get It Done, I'd have the exact same.

I'd have gotten rid of the Guardians, that was so random. I'd have Angel come back and all that the exact same, and have her send him off, I wouldn't have had Spike see it, no need for unnecessary love triangle garbage.
She'd still give Spike the amulet, Willow would still do the spell, the Slayers would play more of a role in defeating the ubervamps, then once it's clear the ubervamps are no longer a threat and they have won, the amulet would activate to destroy the hellmouth.

Buffy and Spike will still have their moment in the hellmouth, but it wouldn't be filled with so much romanticism, since Spike only came back halfway through the series, and then was in the background, instead Buffy would have said she forgave him (in my version, there would have been so little Spuffy in season 7, even Spuffies wouldn't say it existed, till this moment, when they could claim it started, it would have to be developed in the comics, but there would have been no arguments that it existed in my season 7, as there would have been more emphasis on Buffy dealing with Spike coming back and still being hurt by what he did, she would back him when she though he got a soul and the others didn't, but that would basically be it till the last moment)

Sunnydale would still be destroyed and Anya would have died, I'd also have thrown in an Xander episode in there somewhere, and a Willow one to replace The Killer in Me, I'd also have kept the Andrew episode.

I would have loved a big BTVS/AtS crossover about midway through the season, in the vein that Moscow Watcher said. Connor and Dawn interacting, hints of Spike joining the AtS the following season and a big bad they have to combat together that would somehow tie in with The First (which could, in turn, provide at least a semi-plausible reason for the Angel crew not being there for the final fight).

The whole thing sounds pretty awesome, but this is the only part I object to since it would mean no Angel Season 5 (which is by far my favorite season of Angel)

WAY less Spike, no Wood, more time spent on re-establishing the bond between the Scoobies, and more time spent on Willow and her guilt over the previous season - or, you know, ANY guilt at all would have been nice.

I'd focus more on the Potentials, and not just Kennedy, because they ended up as faceless Red Shirts and that just wasn't right. We were supposed to care about these girls and we just didn't. Buffy being the Buffy we knew and loved from the previous seasons, she would have spent more time with them, cared about them more and Rona wouldn't have been such a giant ass when she realized just what exactly Buffy has been through. This would have worked well with the 'less Spike' thing.

I would have brought Faith back earlier and worked on the bond between her and Buffy. Faith says the reason they never get along is because they're not supposed to exist together, but Buffy learned to get along with Kendra and I think she could do the same with Faith.

I also would have gotten rid of the romance angle between Willow and Kennedy. It was too soon and it just made a lot of people really mad. Yes, it wasn't a rebound thing, their relationship actually lasted a really long time, but it made sense in the comics. In S7, it just seemed forced.

I don't know if I would have brought back Tara, though, that would have made the end of S6 kinda meaningless and, depending on how it was done, some people might have seen it as Willow being rewarded for murder and almost ending the world.

Not really. It would just mean that Angel would be the incorporeal vampire lurking around the Wolfram & Hartman building for a few episodes, which is basically what the Senior Partners actually wanted all along. Of course, if that had actually happened, Fred, Wes, or some outside party (like Lindsey) would have re-solidified him before very long.

Eliminate the Potential Slayers. It's real simple, for me at least. The entire concept was like a slap in the face, a sucker punch to the gut, and a kick to the groin for those of us who won't let go of the notion that in every generation there is a chosen one.....she is the Slayer. Not Slayers. Slayer. Singular. Not plural. To just all of a sudden destroy the emotional investment so many of us had in this concept from the previous 6 seasons is very irresponsible and reckless, in my opinion. And it didn't work, as evidenced by the amount of people who dislike the last season. Remember Beatrix Kiddo and the Crazy 88 in the Kill Bill series? That's how the series should have ended, with Buffy, with the help of the Scoobies, destroying the Sunnydale Hellmouth. One woman, One Slayer, tapping out the forces of evil in grand style. It would have been epic and totally unforgettable. It would have been a timeless topic of discussion, but what do we have instead? We have an attenuated Buffy and a bunch of new Slayers who I could care less about and never will care anything about, ever. I love Buffy and the Scoobs. Why should I care about the Potentials? Why? Why the writers did what they did I have no idea, and I really don't care now. But in making the decision to alter the philosophical course of the series, they also altered fan loyalty and love. I'll always love Buffy, but I won't love Buffy as much as I could have if things had been done right. And that's a shame.....

It was a single slayer for less time then it was multiple, Buffy dies 12 episodes in and a second slayer is introduced halfway through the second year run.

Good point, BEG. Thanks. I kind of overlooked that....

That said, I think the qualitative difference between Kendra then Faith is pretty obvious compared to that of the Potentials. But you're right, Buffy ceased to be the only Slayer after her death/resuscitation. I don't think it's fair, however, to imply that just because Buffy was killed and then came back and another Slayer was activated during her brief death then it's okay to create an army of Slayers, thereby nullifying the premise of the show. The circumstances are completely different, and as such, I feel my previous post isn't without merit....

At any rate, now that we're on the subject, when Drusilla killed Kendra I think it should have most probably reverted back to a single Slayer, since Buffy was alive and well. There was no need to activate another Slayer. Bringing Faith into the mix was a mistake, and another writing blunder in the series. But that's just my opinion....

Something else about the finale, more of an aftermath than an actual ending (It could have taken place as the first episode of Season 5 of "Angel", only a few days after the destruction of Sunnydale, moving the actual Episode 1 of that season back a week) would have consisted of the survivors having a brief memorial service in remembrance of their fallen comrades, then going somewhere, probably Angel's old hotel, to regroup, get medical treatment for Wood, and discuss their future plans.

Angel, as expected, approaches Buffy with the suggestion that she and the others take up semi permanent residence there and explaining that with the resources now at his command, he would be able to finance any sort of operation that the Slayers would want to set up. Upon discovering just what "resources" Angel now commands, they have a big argument, resulting in Giles walking out (that would explain why Giles loses all trust in Angel from that point on)

Buffy and her people stay for a few days after Giles' departure, but she eventually realizes that living in that close a proximity to Angel just brings up too many bad memories, and decides that she has basked just about as much as she can at that time. She calls Giles and asks him if he knows of any place where she can take her little army to continue training the girls, finds out that he does, backs up, and heads for "somewhere in Europe."

Buffy ... she eventually realizes that living in that close a proximity to Angel just brings up too many bad memories, and decides..."

To give all of her time and energy to the case of figuring out how she and Angel can circumvent his curse and be together forever and ever. Thank you. 🙂

If that was going to be done, they should have started on it in Season 4. The same conditions existed then, and Angel chose to move away for the good of all and the preservation of his soul. I'm not saying this as a Spuffy shipper, I'm saying it as a fan of both shows. Whenever Buffy spends very much time around Angel, bad things happen. he loses his soul and tries to destroy the world, the First Evil tries to get him to take a long walk in the sunlight, or Buffy's friends raise hell about her taking care of the person who killed Jenny Calendar and almost got the whole world into a hell dimension. Then, on his own show, a demon makes him human again, and he finds out that if the condition remains unchanged, Buffy will die protecting him.

If you want to believe that Buffy and Angel should ultimately be reunited, fine. They can both do research on the problem, recruit Willow's help, and keep in touch over the internet. But close proximity is just too risky.

You're very welcome.

I've thought about this quite a bit, and the problem is that the season seemed to have crazy pacing problems: it spread everything way too thin at the beginning, then tried to fit half a season of development into the last five episodes. That said, broad strokes ideas of how it'd do better (don't have nearly the ideas to do a full outline yet):

Caleb's introduction and Faith's return are moved up to about the halfway point of the season. Spread their part in the story across the episodes - as much as I liked having both of them, there's just too much crammed in at the end.

Cut down on the number of the potentials. Go with, say, Kennedy, Vi, and Amanda. Maybe bring in one other one near the beginning as the redshirt to die, but don't go with more than 3-4 of them. Spend a lot more time developing them, which you'll be able to do with just a few so they'll be more rounded characters.

Bring in one or two people from the Watcher's Council - they couldn't all have been killed in that explosion, since that is making the logical leap that Giles was the only one outside of that building at the time. One of them might work better as Willow's love interest, though I'm honestly not that opposed to her being with Kennedy if the character is developed properly.

The other thing I want to comment on is people saying there should be a big crossover between Buffy and Angel - while I would like it as a fan of both, it's likely to make the events of the crossover nearly incomprehensible to anyone who isn't a fan of both, and it's not likely to make the strongest story. You could make it work, I just wouldn't want to be the one to figure out how.

I kind of agree with you here in some way. Just look what a mess was made out of the big crossover in the comics.

On other hand the end of AtS S5 wiped out most of the most significant AtS characters other than Angel himself, so crossing over post AtS S5, 6 is really not such a big deal for AtS fan.

Bring in one or two people from the Watcher's Council - they couldn't all have been killed in that explosion, since that is making the logical leap that Giles was the only one outside of that building at the time.

Travers(?) was in the act of giving orders to contact all of their field agents, and he specifically mentioned "tactical" teams at that point. It would only stand to reason that the Watchers would have more assets than the Slayer with which to fight demons and vampires on a global basis. They almost certainly had a virtual army at their disposal, and it's hard to imagine all of that just vanishing when the Counsel Headquarters blows up. That was one of the first big flaws in the season for me. Giles, if no one else, should have known of some way to contact the remaining Watcher personnel, and lord knows Buffy and her friende could certainly have used the help, what with the fate of the owrld hanging in the balance and all.

Even if Joss didn't want to have a really substantial strike force there in Sunnydale, a simple statement like "Watcher teams all over the world are under attack from agents of the First. There's no way that they can get here in time to help. We're pretty much on our own here," would have acknowledged that he remembered that all those people were out there.

For that matter, at least some of the Potentials must have been assigned to Watchers for care and training. Why didn't they accompany their charges to Sunnydale?

OK, in my opinion there are three major problems with season 7. So let's fix them.

1. Spin-off whoring

Yeah, all those characters that could populate a potential spin-off series. The potentials, Wood, Dawn's Scooby gang-like friends, former villains with possible redemption arcs - Amy, Andrew, Jonathan. You know what you do with the villains from the previous season? You kill them in an entertaining way, see: The Anointed One. Point is ( without a spin-off ) nobody cares about this garbage. To the trash it goes!

2. The villain

The First Evil isn't just lame, it's also rehashed. It's a monster of the week from a mediocre season 3 episode, worse, it's a monster of the week from a Christmas episode!!! The Ghost of Christmas whatever is about to kick your ass um...scold you, I guess, with his priest buddy so no gifts this year. Seriously, is this the best they could come up with in the final season?! It's ridiculous. It's pathetic. Let's come up with a better villain, shall we? What's sad is that a better villain is not just foreshadowed, it's also present in this very season. The First Evil posing as Buffy, well, wait a second, why can't we just have evil Buffy instead? Huh? We've seen darker versions of Xander and Willow and OK, there was Buffy the vampire in "Nightmares" and Buffy the lone slayer in "The Wish" but they weren't exactly villainous. Bring on evil Buffy! Scoobies deal with a smaller bad in the mid-season finale, then corrupted versions of Buffy, Willow and Xander drop into Sunnydale ( from an alternate universe or from the future...whatever ) to cause as much suffering, chaos and mayhem as they possibly can. They are cool - think Spike next to William cool, they are issue free and they love each other just as much as the real main characters. Conflict ensues and basically, everybody who's not Buffy, Willow and Xander dies. Everybody. Showdown takes place in the series finale. Who wins? That's up to you.

See, I can be constructive.

3. Lack of focus/pandering

No, this show is not about Buffy and her ex-lovers, despite what some fans claim or would like to see. No, it's not about characters from an imaginary spin-off either. It's about Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles ( not sure about Giles though, his role has been diminishing ) Their friendship. Their love. Their unity. It's not Spike's story or Sunnydale's story that is to be concluded, it's their story, OK?
