I loved the episode, and I loved the class that Riley exuded towards Buffy. Even when she was self hating and arguably at her lowest ebb in Season 6, Riley still saw this beautiful strong and capable woman.

I'll confess that after seeing how perfect Riley's life had worked out, and when he caught her in bed with Spike, that a little part of me wanted him to throw it in her face with a smug sense of satisfaction.

But he just didn't have it in him, and his final speech to Buffy made me feel a little ashamed of myself for wanting him to be a prick towards her.

So not only has my opinion of the guy improved, he's also inspired me in a little way to be a better man. 😉

And hey, he may not of had a "little monster" in him like how Spike is always banging on about 🙂rolleyes🙂 but he still managed to find this beautiful, strong and awesome woman who loved him for who he was.

Love it! 😀

I thought it was more than out of character that Riley came back and the whole having a wife a year later was kind of ridiculous and pissed me off.

Liking Riley?! 😱

The entire fandom will probably hunt you down now and subject you to hours of excruciating torture before eating you alive. Better get on that red-eye while you can.

I didn't expect it but I really loved The Finns! LOL

The banter he and Buffy have in the car is so enjoyable and completely reminiscent of their initial contact:

"Nice wheels"
"Came with the car".

hehehe

And I agree, he was a real gent for how he behaved but I don't think we ever saw anything to suggest he would treat Buffy any differently. It was really refreshing to see one of the gang land on their feet.

Yeah, when Sam said "it took him a year to get over you" to Buffy I was like "WTF? Where did ya fit courting, a relationship and engagement into this!?" 😛

P.S. They'd also violently rape you at some point.

What can I say, I like the guy because he's normal and a downright good dude.

Yeah, I liked the detachment Riley displayed towards Buffy. I really believed that he had moved on and was over her. Felt bad for Buffy though because it clear to me that she beginning to remember what she was missing with him. 😱

This episode was really poorly written. The worst written episode of season 6. It was not thought out at all. This is proof.

Well, 'Into The Woods' is the 10th episode of its season, while 'As You Were' is the 15th. It could even be as much as a year and a half, since the seasons don't follow the exact same timetable. And I believe Sam knew about Buffy, so there probably was some overlap there.

Just realized Buffy's birthday is celebrated in 5.13 and and 6.14 respectively so yeah, definitely more than a year.

Oh boy, a year and a half to get over Buffy, date, find out that this woman is THE one, get married, and have an established marriage already by the time they come to Sunnydale that Xander notes as "a great marriage." They don't seem to be in the honeymoon phase really... It's just not really thought out. And even if you say it was a year and a half, with how in love with Buffy he claimed to be... it's way too fast to get married. I would understand having a serious relationship... but actually being married with an established marriage (meaning that it's pretty obvious they didn't get married the week before)... it's too fast.

I don't REALLY have to regale everybody with my "As You Were Conspiracy Theory" again, do I? Just go look up some of my other posts on the subject.

It's a really good theory. I approve.
I really, really hate this episode. I agree with Zobo - I think it's one of the worst of S6 and so poorly written - nothing makes sense.

The only believable moment and the only part of the episode I like is the Spike/Buffy break-up scene. It was handled well and was what Buffy needed at this point.

I don't know if this is what WA is referring to but a nice meta/theory on this ep (not one that I necessarily agree with but it's an interesting read) is the following:

Captain Cardboard, or How I Learned To Stop Seething And Love "As You Were"

Okay, I know I'm usually on the Riley hate train, but how adorable are he & Sam?? I think they're so cute together 😛

Meh, it's all speculation really. It's a fill in the gaps kind of argument. I can see with Spike fans hate the episode though, he's basically an utter tool throughout.

Right there with you. Although, I have officially disembarked the Riley Hate Train. 🙂

Most peoples posts are simply not worth my time to read. I have not been bored enough to care about anyone other than my own post count. Certainly never bored enough to enter into said debates. Welcome.. do you want that Riley banner I used to have?

Not worth your time? Would you mind swiftly dislodge your head from your own arse. :p ;) send me over the banner, not sure if I'll use it. Linds just made me the one I have.

That pretty well covers a lot of my suspicions about "As You Were," but it leaves out a couple.

For one: How did Riley know the precise moment to break into Spike's crypt?

Answer: Go back to the time when Maggie Walsh was running the Initiative. There was one scene where she is watching Buffy and Riley in bed. Obviously, she has the boy's room bugged. If she has one location bugged, it only stands to reason that she would place cameras anywhere else that he was apt to be, places that would include wherever Buffy was: her home, the Magic Shop, and, of course, a certain crypt where lurked a vampire known to sell her information and even help her out on occasion. Riley knew about the hidden cameras (hopefully he didn't know about them while Maggie was spying on him. Otherwise, we've got ourselves one sick soldier boy here) and was watching Spike and Buffy from the moment that she got there until he made his dramatic entrance, armed with a very impressive but totally useful M-16 rifle, the rounds from which would do little more than irritate Spike, who presents no danger to anyone anyway. Chip, remember?

Second: Who was Sam REALLY? Her story was that she was a member of a mission team that Riley and his men rescued in South America, assumedly the Peace Corps group that the Army was originally going down to help. So, after being snatched from the jaws of demonic death, this cute little Peace Corps worker becomes, in barely a year and a half, not only a highly trained and motivated demon fighter, but she has attained a military rank at least equal to Riley's own (Buffy: You take orders from him? Sam: He wishes) In the first place, husband/wife teams would not be allowed in any sort of military action, and this was an ARMY unit, specified so when they recruited Riley to go with them. Secondly, since Sam could not have possibly attained Riley's rank and seniority in so short a time, she damn well WOULD have taken his orders, or face disciplinary action.

That leaves us with only one conclusion about Mrs Riley. Namely, that her entire story is a lie, and she is a far more experienced fighter than she is willing to reveal to Buffy and the Scoobies. Here's where the second rifleman on the grassy knoll comes into the equation.

At some point back when she was working with the Initiative, Buffy HAD to have given a blood sample at some point. The military thrives on sticking needles in its personnel, for any or no reason whatsoever. Since we know that Slayer blood is not normal blood (it heals vampires and is a great aphrodisiac, plus I am sure that it probably has more uses) we might assume that analysis of it might reveal some useful things that might be used by the military. Therefore: Sam or, Slayer Augmented Metabolism. The Initiative had been trying to build a super soldier with Adam, and there's no reason that the super soldier project would have been completely abandoned, once positive proof was found that a superhuman demon fighter did, in fact, exist.

The trip to Sunnydale wasn't ever about any Suvolte demon or its eggs, as much as it was a field test for the Army's latest and greatest super soldier: Sam.

Destroying whatever relationship that Buffy and Spike might have had was just icing on the cake for Riley. I have no doubt that he left Sunnydale certain that Buffy would be staking Spike almost immediately. Hense his anger and disappointment the next year to find out that, not only was "Assface" not dust in the wind, he was also still with Buffy, and she obviously cared even more for him at that point than he had the year before.

Oh, and those cameras that Maggie Walsh had set up all around Sunnydale? Warren accidentally discovered the radio frequencies of at least two: the one in Buffy's front yard, and the one in the Magic Box. (Bet you've been wondering how they managed to install those things, haven't you? Now you know. They didn't, the Army, whod keys to fit every lock in Sunnydale, did.
