I liked him, I don't know why though.

Maybe because he was just normal to an extent, in season 5 he was anyway, and there's not many other people who are just normal in the Buffyverse.

I enjoyed him in the beginning. I thought the whole "I guess I like her" thing in "The Initiative" was a bit too obvious and contrived, but I liked him. He seemed solid and caring. I didn't so much like the inferiority complex he ended up with or the way he dealt with it. But I LOVED him when he came back in "As You Were." THAT was the Riley I knew was in there the whole time. Every time I watch that episode I keep hoping that THIS time, there won't be a Sam and he and Buffy will start up again.

I didn´t "love" him then he came back, he was very good. But other than that, my thoughts exactly.
He's okay. It could've hit us worse, just imagine´the writers had made Parker a regular. Of course it could've also been better...I wouldn't have minded an extra season for DB 😛

I never hated Riley. I really don't care about him enough to love him or hate him. He was quite the bore.:lmao:

I really liked him. I mean except for the whole vampire whores thing- which admittedly was you know a little bit of a mistake on his part, haha- he was my favorite Buffy boyfriend. He was 'sensitive yet manly', knew about Buffy's...specialness and accepted it without question and could also hold his own in that same fight but without the downside of being a creature of the night vampirey thing. Plus he was a sweetie.

So I voted for the 'I love him' because out of all Buffy's love interests I have to admit he was my favorite.

I understand why people like Riley and I think Marc Blucas did a good job with the character he was given but I can't stand Riley. I liked him at first because I always wanted Buffy to be with a sweet, normal guy like Riley, Scott Hope, Xander, or someone like that. However, a series of events caused me to dislike Riley intesely.

1. He realizes he loves Buffy awfully fast. (The Initiative)
2. He doesn't recognize Spike just because he is wearing a different shirt and faking an American accent. (Doomed)
3. He thinks Professor Walsh's attempted murder of Buffy had to be "a test." (Goodbye, Iowa)
4. He makes an old lady cry and attacks Willow. (Goodbye Iowa)
5. He sleeps with Faith/Buffy even though Tara picked up on something wrong. (Who Are You)
6. He can't accept Willow's relationship with Oz. (New Moon Rising)
7. He automatically assumes Buffy slept with Angel. (The Yoko Factor)
8. He refuses to get heart surgery even though every person who cares about him is begging him to. (Out of My Mind)
9. He lets vampire women suck him while Buffy and Dawn are going through hell with their mom.
10. He gives Buffy an ultimatum before she's had any time to process the information that their relationship has been going south and that he's been going to vampire brothels, knowing what she's been going through with her mom. (Into the Woods)
11. He doesn't stay in Sunnydale and try to work things out. (Into the Woods)
12. He doesn't look out the window when his helicopter is taking off. (Into the Woods)

And my favorite Riley quotes......

"I'm not even sure I could take you." (A New Man)
(to Giles) "Are you retired?" (A New Man)
(from Riley's boss) "Quite frankly, I don't think he was ever the soldier that you all hoped he was. Boy thinks too much." (The Yoko Factor) I laughed out loud at that one.
"I don't go out with vampires. They're never interested in my intellect." (Family)
"I'm serious Buffy. Hit me." (Into the Woods)
and my all time fav....
"I'm so in love with you I can't think straight." (The Yoko Factor)

Twelve fabulous reasons! I hate him too.

good post. really i don't like him either.
I voted do not like him, altough it was torn between okey and that. I still think they loaded too much on him.

I never liked Reilly - probably never will. Sometimes i felt sorry for him. Mostly i thought that Marc Blucas was the equivilent of a lump of wood and that had no chemistry with SMG. Reilly as a character might have worked with a better actor more on par with the rest of the cast. For me, he was just never believable.

I read Christian Kane originally auditioned for the part. I wonder if I would have liked Riley better with him playing the role.
Well, to me he was ok. There were some moments where I liked him and others that not so much. Mostly, he was just there.

I voted "don't like him". It's not outright hate, but I simply find him boring. He only starts becoming interesting to me (not likable, but interesting) when he starts his little late-night visits in the vamp brothel... and that's too late to make me care much about him leaving shortly thereafter.

I hate him 😀
the main reason for that is I was mad at Angel leaving and Buffy getting another boyfriend so fast.

1. He realizes he loves Buffy awfully fast. (The Initiative)

Same as Angel. Same as Xander. Same as Oz when he first glanced at Willow.

2. He doesn't recognize Spike just because he is wearing a different shirt and faking an American accent. (Doomed)

I don't remember, but did he ever see Spike face to face?

3. He thinks Professor Walsh's attempted murder of Buffy had to be "a test." (Goodbye, Iowa)

Prof. Walsh was like a monitor to him, it's hard for him to just accuse her. He sure will try to find some explanation to what she did and once he realized she tried to kill Buffy, he left the Initiative, and that's in itself was a great sacrifice.

5. He sleeps with Faith/Buffy even though Tara picked up on something wrong. (Who Are You)

Tara read Faith's aura. Why not blame all Buffy's friends who didn't recognize that this Buffy wasn't Buffy? They knew Buffy longer than Riley did.

6. He can't accept Willow's relationship with Oz. (New Moon Rising)

It was hard to grasp at first. Hello, a girl dating a werewolf? But then he came through and he saved Oz from the Initiative, he was heroic.

8. He refuses to get heart surgery even though every person who cares about him is begging him to. (Out of My Mind)

He was having a dilemma. He didn't want to be normal, because he thought Normal Riley would not be interesting to Buffy. It's a matter of insecurity.

9. He lets vampire women suck him while Buffy and Dawn are going through hell with their mom.

Buffy never needed him. He was acting out. He tried being there for Buffy but she just shut him out. And he wanted to know what it felt like being bit by a vampire.

11. He doesn't stay in Sunnydale and try to work things out. (Into the Woods)

Because Buffy didn't give him a reason to stay. She never needed him anymore. And he didn't feel that she loved him, so he took off.

12. He doesn't look out the window when his helicopter is taking off. (Into the Woods)

Because of the loud sound of the helicopter? Seriously, how could he hear her?

I was gonna sya he exact same thing. Nothing that caritas mentioned made any sense at all...
i put he's ok, he was a bit of a wanker in s4 with his *i play by the rules* attitude, and you can tell he's patheticly jealous of Buffys power and Angel. but i just feel so sorry for him in Into the Woods that i cant hate him. He's a good guy, just a tosser is all.

Good point. I just meant that Riley couldn't even remember Buffy's name and then he is telling Forrest that Buffy is not his type and is "peculiar." It's only after several of his friends and Professor Walsh complement Buffy that he shows any romantic interest in Buffy and it just sort of comes out of nowhere, and that's the first hint I got that the character might not work out for me.

I didn't know that about Christian Kane auditioning for the role of Reilly. This is what it says on wiki:

Actor Christian Kane also auditioned for Riley Finn. Kane went on to play the role of Lindsey McDonald on the spin-off show Angel. Kane says he played his audition for Riley "perhaps a little less than wholesome", which he feels resulted in Joss Whedon later casting him as a darker character.

Oops. Here I was going for mentor. *hits self for not checking before posting*

I can't imagine Lindsey being Riley. I like how tall Riley is 😀

lol, I wonder if Buffy is taller than Lindsay. :)
I didn't know this. :S Thank god "Lindsey" is not Riley. That would be horrible. Just imagine "Lindsey" with Buffy... (I didn't like the real Riley with Buffy but lindsey with buffy... that's just weird!)
