Riley

I wish people wouldn't throw the word 'misogynistic' around like it applies to any man who might have trouble adjusting to women who are stronger than them. A true misogynist is someone like Warren or Billy from ANGEL s3 or Caleb. I agree Riley had issues with Buff's strength, but let's face it, Buffy's not strong cause she's a woman, she's the slayer. Riley couldn't handle not being able to help, not being able to fight. Riley would have liked to been able to save Buffy at least once. Maybe to some of you this sounds like Chauvinism but it's how most men are. They don't like to be weak or powerless. Anyway, I liked Riley and thought the relationship with Buffy was great in the beginning but I see why it didn't work out in the long run.

(It dawned on me that someone might think I am a chauvinist or something so for the record, I have no issue with a woman who makes money than me or is capable of defending me.... I am weak 🙂)

I'm not a Bangel or Spuffy shipper. I don't think either of those relationships was healthy. I'm just saying all the other men in Buffy's life were okay with her being stronger except Riley. Riley for one reason or another was too insecure to have a girlfriend who didn't need saving and for that I feel sorry for him. I honestly think Riley tries to be a good boyfriend but he is too weak to handle living in Buffy's world.

I'm not a diehard shipper, but I liked Riley as a character.

The reason a lot of fans don't like him, I suspect, is because he doesn't radiate Bad Boy mojo. He is stalwart and rational and level headed ... and therefore "boring."

I agree he never had a chance with Buffy .... if Willow didn't have to be gay, he would have made a better pairing for her.

I don't hate Riley, and I don't agree that he was misogynistic. I just think he was insecure at that time, definitely not up to the challenge of dating someone like Buffy. But he must've grown, because I don't see Sam as a wussy female character, not in the least. He had his flaws, and the Initiative & S4 are my least fav storylines & seasons, but I do like Marc Blucas...and he's not hard on the eyes at all!!! I'm not sure it was weak writing, maybe more of how Buffy would (or rather would not) deal well with a "normal" boyfriend. Of her "normal" love interests, he's my favorite, though (much better than Parker, Scott Hope, or even Owen). But yeah, they're all a little pathetic.
