Breakfast Club actress Molly Ringwald is to appear in the West End stage show When Harry Met Sally.

Ringwald will take over from Buffy star Alyson Hannigan on June 2.

The flame-haired 36-year-old is best known for appearing in 80s Brat Pack movies such as Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink.

She won rave reviews when she played Sally Bowles in a Broadway production of Cabaret.

A new Harry will also take over from Luke Perry on the same date but his identity has not yet been announced.

When Harry Met Sally, an adaptation of the hit film starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, opened at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket in February.

Jazz star Jamie Cullum and his brother Ben have written the score.

A:

Molly Ringwald:

Pouty redhead who endeared herself to movie audiences in several "Brat Pack" films written by John Hughes: Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986). Ringwald has shown real ability and forthrightness, beginning with her debut performance in Tempest (1982), and continuing right on through Betsy's Wedding (1990). Hughes wrote the part that, to date, has best suited her: the lowerclass daughter of Harry Dean Stanton who simultaneously anticipates and dreads her date with one of her better-heeled classmates in Pretty in Pink. She made the cover of "Time" magazine, and was emblematic of a new generation on screen; then her career fizzled. Bad choices and bad luck seem to have conspired against this once promising young talent. Her most recent credits have been telefilms and miniseries, including Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994). She's the daughter of blind jazz musician Bob Ringwald, with whom she was performing while still a preschooler.
