And the doping issue raised its head again in the race involving GB's James Guy last night/this morning. Guy narrowly finished 4th in his race just missing out on a medal. But Sun Yang of China who came first in the 200m freestyle shouldn't be in Rio due to a doping offence. There are two ways of looking at that. One is the obvious fact that if Yang had rightfully been banned then Guy would have gotten a medal. Then again if you watch the race for a long time he was at least second. And it was close between him and the guy buying for second. Even when he dropped back into third from that point he should have at least have held onto third position. The problem is that by the governing bodies not taking strong and clear actions it has raised more questions marks at the games.

I imagine in five years, Sun Yang will fail another test and the medals will be re-issued, but then the real winners have missed out on the glory of standing on the podium infront of family and friends, hearing their national anthem etc. It makes a mockery of the whole thing.
I can't understand why other athletes aren't raising more of a stink about it with their sports authorities, in the media etc.

Probably they don't want to look petty. (Not saying they would be, but that they would feel like they were being that way.)
And I guess they can't actually accuse anyone of anything without proof. I just feel sorry for the athletes doing it the honest way
Absolutely. These athletes work so hard, so to come second, third, fourth etc after a drugs cheat must be an awful experience. You'll get the recognition eventually, but you should have had it at the time. 🙁

In this case that probably won't happen. He's already been punished for this failed test its just than that punishment didn't include him missing the Olympics (which it should have). If he fails again they need to come down on him much harder though and ban him from something that counts.

I love the olympics - and usually am an avid watcher - but this year it feels grubby and dirty and the coverage to me is dismal given this channel has 3 or 4 digital channels, that instead are playing "home makerover" with olympic highlights.
But as the live hours of equestrian were too late for me anyway, I woke up to the news (on fb 😛) of Bronze, which I guess means we knocked a few rails in the jumping. I saw Shane Rose's "highlights" for XC and felt quite sad @Blaze will know what I mean, that Pony was a tryer and just ran out of steam, heartbreaking to see him try his heart out for Shane. If Shane gets another Olympics after this, well WOW! Although Phillip Dutton is still on the scene and how old is he now? He hasnt had his face smashed in a few times though...
The angles that they take the footage of the equestrian cross country does not do it justice, a high angle like that makes the jumps look easy. But does give the best overall view. I can assure you - they are not, and those jumps are fking massive. I was at Sydney 2000 olympics, I have seen this level of jumping in person. I used to groom and have friends who compete 2* and that is near crazyness. (2 rider deaths this year over east guys - not messing around, these riders know what the risks is and still do it and love it). I do admit, these guys make it look easy.

Big, big win for team GB in the men's Hockey today. 9-1! against the hosts Brazil who don't seem to be having the best of tournaments so far. Anyway, that's a win, defeat and draw now for GB. Their match tomorrow night is going to be the cruical group game. Now am settling in for some swimming finals.
Dam, I can't even find the highlights for the equestrian sports, coverage has been abysmal for all riding disciplines in Canada (aside from show jumping which will likely be shown since it's one of the only sport where we have good odds of being in the medals). I've been keeping up with the ranking, but that's about all the coverage I've been able to get. Hopefully replays come out soon so that I can see. Don't worry about the age though, we had Ian Millar do his last Olympic at 65! (mind you he was in show jumping).
It's really a shame that there's not more coverage though, because Eventing is by far the most impressive and difficult horse discipline. The footage really doesn't do it justice, those jumps are HUGE. Then there's the fact that those same riders and horses also compete in dressage, which is much, much harder than it looks. Eventers deserve so much more credits than they get. Hell, I've jumped 4 ft without issues in the arena, but I don't think I could even tackle a 1* event. You don't realize how scary it is until you stand beside those jumps.
Not sure if these will work in your region, Im not all high tech, I love our commentator Vicky Roycroft, she rides the rounds with them. I have seen some snippets of her quotes on fb but didnt watch every rider, I figure I can get better access after the olympics.
My last comp was last year, I fell off in an 85cm round, I miss the days you could just get back on and finish, I only fell cos I got lazy and expected the tired horse to have got the picture by the 7th jump haha. These horses look tired (bar chris and Santa - jeez that thing goes!) which is understandable but I wonder how much the weather has affected them.
I havent done a one day event in a few years, I regularly finished on my dressage score... its just, my dressage score was never really any good haha! I usually got around 4-7th place doing it that way - so not too bad hahaha! Except that one time... "pony left arena"...

haha that made me laugh, has definitely happened to me before, you get overconfident and next thing you know you're on the ground! But kudos to you for eventing! One of these days when I have money for a second horse (mine is too old now), I want to give it a try!
I have been wondering too how the heat and humidity is in Brazil. We've had a heat wave in Canada over the past few weeks and you can definitely see a difference in the horses' performance, I can imagine that it's no better in Brazil.

Yea the coverage is not very good this time. Last Olympics I was on a ship in the ocean and I got to watch almost everything. If NBC is going to be the only ones then they need to step up their game.
Women's rowing came in 3rd for team USA! And men's beach volleyball beat Mexico! Woot woot! I didn't pay attention to water polo though.

Yes. Pony gets a life of luxury, as do any ponies that train for the olympics or high level of competition in Australia, even if they dont make it. I duno if you notice the team of people running after the horses after the cross country? They are there soley for the horse. They are what we call grooms, the horse carers- who are are specifically there to care for the horse. I am sure there is a team farrier, vet and nutritionist too. Australia isnt even the world leader for horse care - Germany, Canada, England are all brilliant and where aussies go to train.
3DE has changed dramatically in the last 30 odd years - but I know Olympics are slightly different. For instance, Aust won Gold in the 90's with riders who had fallen, got back on and finished their round with broken bones before being treated. Now days, its one fall and you're out.
Awesome in rowing! That is something I enjoy.
I saw a bit of the Aust vs Hungary water polo game - but not the end yet. My dad will have that covered, I am sure I will hear about how the Aussies went from him. Do they have underwater cameras this year for water polo? I remember many a bathing suit ripped off at Sydney hahah! We had tickets to every single water polo game - olympic family advantage!

The last team my dad played for before his heart gave out, was the E grade Whales. LOL. Retired horses get a better life than retired water polo players do haha.
Swimming is a part of eventing horses lives, I used to swim eventers and racehorses, not many had too many issues with the pool to be honest, more fun to be had at the beach lol.
Dad got each of us kids tickets to every sport we competed in plus some. I am not a canoe/kyayk fan but that was one of the most fun - entertainment wise (my step sister on wais team). I saw heaps of equestrian, water polo, rowing, really amazing and I am so pleased to have had the experience as a spectator.
There are many events that are open for public to watch (at least back then), road bikes, marathon, walking, boats, were just a few.
The competitors acklnowledge the crowd, a lot! They seem to appreciate it, which is lovely.
