:: vampire after bieng asked about the spike movie CW spokeswoman Dawn Ostroff had this to say "Is the Spike movie dead?! "We typically don't do movies of the week," responds Ostroff, "but never say never." Other comments from Joss Whedon himself suggest both of these may be in the works though Ripper may be released in England and not in the U.S until much later::bbat::

The Ripper possibility has credibility, because Joss Whedon suggested it at comic-con.

The Dawn Ostroff comment means nothing. They've been saying the same thing in practically the same words since the days of the WB. It's just the pat answer they give to the question. Don't believe me? This thread

starts in 2004, and follows the the remarks as they appear. Check it out.

Anyhow, the Spike movie couldn't be made now within the five years Marsters gave Whedon before he thought he would be too old to play an immortal vampire who was turned in his mid twenties, Of course there's always the option of an animated movie...

Pfft whatever, he looks good, he'd be fine.
I'll probably be saying this when he's 80, but yep. 🙂 Hope they get the money for any Ripper/Spike thing.. I need to be a billionaire to fund these things.. hmm or befriend one and get them addicted!

im wicked excited about 'ripper', i can't wait to see what joss decides to do with that. but i'm still extremely skeptical about the spike movie. i dont think that'll ever see the light of day. but if it does, it better be soon. i dont think james will still consider doing it if too much time goes by. (though i think we can all agree that he'll still be drool worthy and able to play spike, even in many years to come!)

Joss said he wanted to do one also in a recent interview James said hes still up for it also Marti Noxon has already been hired to write the script as of 07

Though I would LOVE for it to happen, I too am skeptical about the Spike flick. I got a lotta hope for Ripper though! I'm all antsy for a US release already!!

I seem to have misplaced the interview its in either august june or july on whedonesque.com im not quite sure witch

LOL! I think he looks great too! And what do you prefer? A film with an actor that is a bit old for his character or nothing? I prefer the first one! 🙂

yeah adsactly, it's fiction I can pretend lol.
I just read at syfyportal.com that the Ripper movie will be made, and that there is a good chance that either Sarah or David might make a cameo appearance in it. I have no idea just how reliable this is, so take it with a grain of salt (unless you have a blood pressure problem...)

Here's the full article:

The former “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” star is definitely not going back to Sunnydale anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean his adventures have ended entirely as the Anthony Stewart Head spin-off series “Ripper” is about to finally come to life.

“It’s more likely than it has been for some time,” Head told SyFy Portal’s Alan Stanley Blair during the recent Collectormania convention in Glasgow, Scotland. “Joss [Whedon], I think I’ve actually got to talk to him to find out if he’s got it. It’s all about Fox now, whether Fox will give permission but the BBC [is] up for it.”

Rumors of “Ripper” featuring Head's character Giles from The WB and UPN series have been in circulation for more than a few years since he departed from “Buffy” at the end of its fifth season almost seven years ago. The original premise of the series was that Giles would come out of retirement in England in order to solve some ghost stories on a more grown-up and sophisticated scale than “Buffy” itself.

Since then however, the project went cold and the proposed two-hour backdoor pilot was never produced. However, Head said the project was finally moving ahead and that producers have received a green light for the series to be developed."

Although Fox may have given a nod to “Ripper,” it’s still a long way off coming to fruition as the go ahead for development is still a few steps short from a commitment to the series. But as Head himself says, it’s a lot more than fans had before.

“They’ve only made an announcement that they’ve given the go ahead for development,” he said. “But that’s a lot further down the line than we were a year ago. It’s a good story, too. [Whedon's] told me … but there is no script.”

And if the prospect of Giles returning to solve paranormal mysteries isn’t enough to get fans excited, there is always the possibility that Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) or Angel (David Borenanz) may pop in for a small cameo, even though the latter is tied up with a new series on Fox called "Bones."

“If all things are equal we’ll do it next summer,” Head later told fans at the event. “It could involve her, it could involve him but it doesn’t hinge on that.”

🙂

I believe at the upfronts Dawn kinda brushed off the Spike movie, basically saying they're not into movie-of-the-weeks, but I'm do recall her saying The CW would love to work with Joss Whedon on *other projects* (as in, a new series not related to vampire slayers).

I'd rather Joss just develop a new series anyway.

Sounding more like a tv show to me 🙂 ...I hope. But yeah no real official comments

"Buffy Spin-off coming" Please wait...

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer could soon have something to look forward to aside from fan conventions and comic book adaptations, with reports that the spin-off series Ripper is close to becoming a reality.

According British paper the Daily Star, Anthony Stewart Head will reprise his role as vampire-fighting librarian Rupert Giles in a new series to be co-produced by Fox and the BBC.

Head recently told Syfyportal.com that Ripper is more likely than it has been for some time and that the BBC is "up for it". He added that he would soon be talking to Buffy creator Joss Whedon about the project.

Buffy fans started hoping Head would star in a spin-off almost as soon as the original series wrapped up in 2003. According to rumours, Ripper will catch up with Giles in his native England, where he comes out of retirement to battle supernatural forces. The series will supposedly be a more adult, darker incarnation of Buffy.

Reports claim that Ripper will go into production in early 2008 for a mid-year premiere. The BBC is yet to comment.

I just read the Pete Doherty bit and i'll tell you what, I WON'T be happy about this.

The guy is an appaling image for a show that has a young fanbase, constantly on drugs and getting away with it.
I don't care that he has the whole 'macabre' image, he is the wrong person for this.

I could genuinely see myself not watching an episode with him in.

What the heck is Whedon thinking if this is genuine.
It's like he is glamourising this lifestyle and telling young people(we have 12 year olds on this board that love teh show so will watch it so don't come back with an argument that it will be aimed at an adult audience) that it's ok.

Okay, forgive me for this really horrible/dumb question. I have rewatched BtVS series twice. Have I missed somethg? Who's Ripper? Wait, is that Giles' other name? Terribly sorry

it's not a dumb question. it's good to ask about stuff you don't know to get it cleared up. "ripper" is what ethan rayne calls giles-- it was his nickname way back when he was younger and he delved into the dark arts a bit. if you remember the episode in season 2 "the dark age", it's when we get to know more about giles' past. we really first get a glimpse of "ripper" in "halloween" when ethan appears, and he & giles have a confrontation towards the end of the episode so giles can get everything reversed
