It's looking like good news for those of us anticipating the production of Ripper...
CBR News also caught up with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" vet Anthony Stewart Head, who was at the awards with Paris Hilton and Bill Moseley promoting their horror musical "Repo! The Genetic Opera!" "I get to rip people's body parts out and sing about it," Head remarked. "It's very cool."

At Comic-Con International this year, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon told fans the long-rumored Giles project, named "Ripper" after the watcher's one-time nickname, may finally come to fruition. Head confirmed that Whedon was in talks with the BBC. "It would be a one-off, and it would probably be a two hour movie, or a 90 minute movie for TV," Head explained. "We're looking at maybe something in the summer, just kind of depends on the availability of rights and things.

its awesome to hear that he loved working on the show so much that he is willing to continue doing it years later!

but wait, im in the u.s.a, if it airs on the bbc, i wont be able to see it for awhile?!

ooo i cant waite, even though he's not may favourite actor anything connected to Buffy is amazing in my book. im so excited.

They have the trailer at youtube.com. I would post it, but I can't just yet. Just type in "REPO! The Genetic Opera" in the search and you should find it. IT looks awesome!!! It's due out next year sometime...

Keeping my fingers crossed for Ripper in a big way! I loved the idea when I first heard about it and I know he can pull off a really good movie from it. Plus, though I love season eight it would be awesome to see Buffy revived on film too.

In the process of an interview concerning his new TV Series with Eliza Dushku, Joss discussed how it might affect Ripper.

TVWeek: Is there anything new with "Buffy" spinoff "Ripper"? [Whedon previously announced he's trying to set up that show at the BBC.]

Whedon: There isn't anything new. It might become too problematic. The rights issue with "Ripper" becomes complicated. There are other characters in the woods. We may have to do some fancy footwork. Obviously I'm committed to ["Dollhouse"], but that does not mean I'm not doing "Ripper."

Jeez pessimist much Allycat? 😉 He just said it wouldn't affect Ripper, he's committed to both projects but it depends on a lot of factors, which we already knew about. The 'other characters in the woods' bit sort of confused me with it's vagueness.

So who are the "other characters in the woods", I wonder. My nomination for probable canditates are the Kazuis.

I don't think it's Fox. I don't think Joss would have come to the conclusion he could get this done in the first place if Fox had been negative. Also Fox has done this sort of trading shows thing in the past with the Doctor Who Movie. It's not unprecedented.

Again, I suspect it's the Kazuis. They wangled producer credits for BTVS in spite of having nothing to do with the production. They even got their names on Angel. What's the Buffy movie got to do with Angel?

I was wondering that also. What's up with those Kazuis?.. they must have some legal claim to the original Buffy characters, otherwise I don't get why they had those credits either.

They did the Buffy movie. That much we know. I don't know exactly what their connection is to Sand Dollar productions. But as I read it Sand Dollar Entertainment, and Kazui enterprises are separate entities who connected to do the Buffy movie. Sand Dollar does hold some rights (or at least they did at one time). I see some sites such as THIS one list both the Kazuis and Sand Dollar as rights holders in their disclaimer. Do they know something we don't? Who knows. I've never seen all the rights owners listed, or a description of exactly how it works (just bits and pieces), and I have looked for the information. No wait, I did see one explanation once, but that was by Richard O Sullivan, and he's full of it.

I'm pretty sure of one thing though. They couldn't get their names on the credits of Buffy and Angel without actually doing anything unless they had some kind of pull.

Well they had executive producer titles right? So did some others... but I'm guessing Joss was the first executive producer in terms of creative power. I've only made short films before, so we usually just had 1 executive producer who would have mostly everything run by them before it was done. I suppose they might have some sort of rights over any production related to Buffy because of their involvement in the original production.. it could have been in the contract in the original film. But yeah it's really odd.. and besides that I just can't stand what they did to Joss' script, which isn't all the directors fault, but yeah.
Anyways I'm taking this thread way off the subject! The other 'characters' thing first struck me as an actual written character, which they might need the rights to use.. but yeah, who knows. Hope this happens, I'd love some me some Buffyverse, as well as Dollhouse.

I hope this thing stays in the works, if for no other reason than that I loooove Giles. We never really got a Giles-centric episode. Too much of his life happened off screen. I'd love to see a one-off focusing on my favorite character, especially if it deals with his "Ripper" side.

I think my reputation comment messed up there ^. It entered itself before I'd done any like...erm...typing. Well anyway what I was saying was I totally agree with everything you said and I do really hope this does get made and doesn't get shelved because I just think it would be so good. Plus, helps fill the Giles-not-there-in-season-6 blanks hehe
