River's Dark Willow

If the show hadn't been cancelled, do you think River could have taken the path of Dark Willow-becoming increasingly powerful and addicted to that power to the point of turning aganist her friends and her brother, and using that power for selfish, destructive reasons?
 
I think that would have been great. I don't think they should have done it exactly the same way as they did with Willow, but I would have loved it if she had become the villain at some point. Maybe through the Alliance gaining control over her or something, making her their tool. And of course, fighting her would have been extremely difficult for the others. Really interesting topic. Thanks for posting!
 
I would have loved to see that- perhaps against Jayne but never, ever against Simon. Just can't picture it. I think River is a far too private and anxious to ever become power hungry.
 
I think that the closest that we would have ever seen to Dark Willow in River would have been something similar to Willow was after Glory hurt Tara in Season 5, but the total personality change that Willow went through at the end of Season 6, I just couldn't imagine.
 
The only time I could ever see River using her powers with the pure intent to hurt someone is if they intentionally hurt or killed Simon. She is just too much of a good character to go bad the way that Willow did.
 
No way. Willow seeks power and claws it for herself; her explosives tendencies are present since day one. River displays none of such. Besides, that dependent, brain-damaged, weak-willed, sexless, Mary Sue-like moeblob just doesn't have the guts.

I think there's a possibility she could have, more likely in a situation were Simon was at risk but the possibility is there, for example I dont think she'd have care if the reavers in Serenity were human, like an angry mob of normal humans.

Having the least likely one go from innocent to dark is a dramatic story. It's like saying you knew that what was going to happen to Willows character in season 3, there's no way you could know for certain at that point, but with a slow build to it, it would be believable.

I agree with this. I think that at the point we see her in Firefly, she already had a lot of power that she has to try to control even though her mind has become fragmented; And I also think that it's not in her character to abuse power or use it for evil purposes. That's just not the sense I get from River; I think she's more a seeker of meaning and beauty than a seeker of power. She's a unique personality and very in tune with what's going on in the environment even through her communication has become jumbled - said in riddles or a cryptically rather than in an everyday conversation way. I think that attaining power is not really on her agenda.

The same could be said for Willow - that, at the beginning, the abuse of power is not in her character - though her and River are very different characters. The only similarities between them is that they're both kind of quiet and introverted, smart. Other than that, they're quite different. For example, Willow is much more interpersonal and clued in to others on an emotion level, even though she's seen as a nerd and 'unpopular' at school. River is more of a true outsider, whereas Willow is more like Kaylee in character (enthusiastic and likable).
