Between 10:30AM and 12:00PM I heard someone knocking at my door. I was going to be late for work so I didn't stop to open the door. I knew if it was anyone important they could get in with a house key. I left the house and was passing through my screen door when I noticed a yellow panflet wedged between the screen and the door. I thought nothing of it, thinking it was another Asian Food or Pizza flyaer, and tossed it in the outside trash.
I got home from work at 3:00PM. Sometime later I fell asleep because I was tired. Later on I woke up to someone knocking on the door. I got up and nearly bumped into two police officers who were standing on my lawn. I started to freak out. They asked me if I had heard any disturbances throughout the day. I told them about the person at my door, and I let them know I didn't see the person there. They told me to wait outside and they'd be back in a minute.
I'm now standing on my front lawn with three police cars and two unmarked [detective] cars parked in front of my house. A minute later a detective greets me and asks me if I've ever seen something before. He pulls something out of his pocket and what do does he hand me? A yellow panflet. I tell him that there was one in my door this morning, probably left there from the person who was at my door. The detective thanked me for my help and walked back to his car. As I'm standing on my lawn I can see other police officers walking up to other houses to ask them questions.
Finally, a police man walked up to me and I asked him what was going on. He told me that there were fiour robberies in my neighborhood today. They think that the robber is posing as sales men and uses the yellow panflets. Once he gets you to open the door and invite him inside, he robs you. The police officer told me I was lucky I didn't open the door. Another police officer comes over and I heard him say something along the lines of 'five more people had a salesman come to their door today.'
I'm sitting there completely dumbfounded and I ask them if they're checking every house. The officer tells me no. I'm nosy and ask him why he'd check my street out of the whole town. He tells me that my neighbor [to my left] was robbed. My neighbor is named Emma. She's an 88-year-old woman who lives by herself; her husband died about 9 years ago. She's a sweet innocent woman who wouldn't harm a fly. So immediately I leave my lawn and run to her house to see if she's ok.
I walk right inside and there are cops everywhere. They're dusting for finger prints and taking pictures. She comes out of a room and sees me and she starts crying. She gives me this big hug and just holds onto me for like five minutes and cries her heart out. She knows me. I've lived next door to her for about 15 years. I shovel her driveway and sidewalk whenever it snows. I check up on her once a month to make sure she's ok, and I bring my dog over often because she likes animals. After a few minutes she calms down and I ask her what happened.
From what the police can conclude the robber came in through the back. She has a porch in the back of her house with screens all around it. He cut the screen out and got onto her porch, and from there he just busted through a window and came inside. All her jewely was gone. She was the most upset about a bracelet her late husband bought her. She said that it was the last thing he bought her before he died and it was worth well over $1,000 dollars. I told her I wanted to look around the house to make sure everything was ok.
I walked into her television room and there is broken glass everywhere. When the person came in through the window he hit it with such force that it flew everywhere in the room. The robber was also very destructive. Anything he could find in the house that was glass was broken. She had these glass dog statues in her house, since she loves dogs, and he beat those to pieces. He also put a hole through her wall with something. The police were calling her daughter to try and get her to be there, but she was out so they were happy I was there.
After the police had left it was just me and my neighbor. She was totally broken. I can imagine how hard it must be for an 88-year-old woman to be robbed. I didn't want her to walk around this broken house all night, especially with glass everywhere. I went through her whole house and picked up every large piece of glass I could find, and then sucked the other pieces up with a vaccume cleaner. I decided to have her take me through each room of her house so I could make sure everything else was in order.
I noticed some things in the house that didn't seem right, and could lead the police to finding whoever did it. For one, the phone had been moved from it's origional place. That makes me think he placed a phone call while there and didn't think she'd notice. I left a note for the police to check her next phone bill for any suspicious numbers. Then, as I was walking through her living room, I tripped over an open bottle of wine. It seems that the people who broke in were cocky. Not only did he steal all her jewelry and destroy her house, he also placed phone calls and had a glass of wine. He also went through her mail that came while she was out and stole her social security check.
I stayed with her for another hour until her daughter arrived. The daughter was so thankful that I was there to help her. I said it was no problem. I'd do that for any person who needed my help. I should have told the police about when someone came into my house uninvited last week. I thought it was a ghost, but clearly I know it could be this robber. I Mom's car was also broken into not to long ago. Maybe I should invest in a gun?
Oh well... just needed to vent... Bye
