What a tragedy! There have been a few statement from actors - nothing from SMG but I'm sure that this will hit her hard. Not much else to say, but I am glad that Huffington post added this line, and I will too

Need help? In the U.S., call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The suicide of someone famous can be a trigger if anyone you know suffers from severe depression.

Thank you for this thread,he was a wondeful man :)
Very sad to hear. A tragedy indeed.
I wasn't really a fan of his comedy, but I think he was a great actor and I will especially remember hum for his amazing performances in Good Will Hunting and Insomnia.
RIP Robin

I just saw this and it really shook me up. I don't really know Robin Williams as an actor and never fallowed his career, but depression and suicide are issues close to my heart. I learnt about his death through a friend that suffers from very severe mental illness, and she seemed very affected by this.

RIP Robin Williams, my thoughts go out to the people close to him. In all of this tragedy I hope that his death has a positive impact and that people suffering from depression or other illness reach for help before it reaches this point.

I'm heartbroken over this. I've always loved his sense of humor, and now, his light has been taken from the world. My sympathies go out to his family, friends, and all of his fans.

"O Captain! my Captain..."

This just goes to show that you never truly know what's going on inside a person. He was always the one full of life and laughter, the one to bring a smile on our faces. I guess we never really knew what he went through. That's why we have to treat each other with kindness and respect, because everyone has their own demons to fight.

May he finally rest in peace.

I heard the news on the television news in the morning, (In Italy it is now morning) ...and it made me really sad. Just now they are airing some scenes of Mork & Mindy, but I can't laugh 🙁

God, this is such a shock! 🙁

I always thought the term 'smiles of a clown' applied to Robin Williams, he always seemed somewhat unhappy beneath all that manic energy, but this is still so sad.

I love 'Good Morning Vietnam', 'Good Will Hunting' and 'Dead Poet's Society' so much, truly great films. 🙂

'Carpe Diem'- Every death should be a reminded to embrace to the life that you have, and to make it the best you can.

P.S- loved SMG for her little tribute on twitter.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

R.I.P Robin. 🙁

How horribly tragic. No one is immune to the clutches of depression.
Seeing this in the headlines today made me very sad and I keep thinking about what a great body of work RW is leaving behind. He was an amazingly talented man!

RIP Robin Williams and love to his family and friends.

I was genuinely shocked when I woke up to see the headlines today.

And awful tragedy. He will be sorely missed. 🙁

I saw read about this last night before going to bed and it's incredibly sad. I haven't watched an awful lot of his films but he had an incredible presence and I was very fond of Mrs. Doubtfire and Hook as a kid.

I think it's a great achievement of his to be able to bring so much joy and happiness to people through his work whilst obviously struggling so much to find some for himself.

Hearing this news was shocking as hell for me. I have been a fan of Robin Williams since I was a kid, and watched "Mork and Mindy" with my parents. He is one of the greatest actors ever. A lot of people think he could only do comedy, but he was also excellent in movies like "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia". "Mrs. Doubtfire" is a family favorite in our house, as is "Aladdin", so my kids were really sad, too.
It just goes to show that you never really know how bad someone is struggling. As someone with depression, my heart aches for him and his family. 🙁

Sarah made a statement to People:
"My life is a better place because I knew Robin Williams," Gellar said. "To my children he was Uncle Robin, to everyone he worked with, he was the best boss anyone had ever known, and to me he was not just an inspiration but he was the Father I had always dreamed of having. There are not enough adjectives to describe the light he was, to anyone that ever had the pleasure to meet him. I will miss him everyday, but I know the memory of him will live on. And to his family, I thank them for letting us know him and seeing the joy they brought him. Us crazy ones love you."

Sarah's statement was truly beautiful, and sad. Knowing her history with her own father, reading the line about him being the father she never had broke my heart and made me tear up a little. 🙁

I agree, he was really good at drama too. One Hour Photo is a great film.
So sad to hear this! I admit I haven't seen all that much of his work, but Dead Poets Society is my favourite movie of all time, and I can't explain how much it has affected my life, and Mr Keating is one of the fictional characters I've been most inspired by. I thank him for that roll, it wouldn't have been the same without him.

I just want to share with you guys this short tribute which I found quite moving, written by my favorite non-fiction author:

A brief memory of Robin Williams

by Richard Dawkins

I met him only once. It was June 3rd 2006, at the Academy of Achievement dinner in Los Angeles. After dinner, at the end of the conference, there was a loud band and dancing (Archbishop Desmond Tutu delightfully prominent among the dancers), and Sheryl Crow was the singer. Suddenly Robin Williams hurtled unannounced, unrehearsed onto the stage. Sheryl Crow graciously (and with good-natured surprise) gave up the microphone to him and stood by. He treated us to an exuberant impromptu performance, delivering verse reports on most, if not all, of the speeches we had been listening to during the conference. He deftly summarised each of the lectures in a rhyming couplet (sometimes in the special rap sense of rhyming). Then, after stepping back for a few seconds' thought while the band played on, he would advance to the front of the stage with a new verse about the next lecture, and so on. Assuming it was genuinely unscripted "“ and that is certainly what we all thought at the time "“ it was a creative tour de force of comic genius.

In addition to his better known roles (Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting etc.) I especially liked him as Popeye in the relatively little-known acted version, directed by Robert Altman, with Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl and an adorable baby debuting in the rà´le of Swee'Pea. He got Popeye's grating voice and strutting insouciance to surreal perfection.

So sad.

Very funny man but plagued by such sadness and depression. I for one will miss him and his work -- his memory will, however, live on forever.

This is absolutely devastating. I was extremely shocked when I first heard, but it's unfortunately not surprising when you factor in his history of drug abuse and struggles with depression.

R.I.P Mr. Williams, you will be missed.

I know exactly what you mean 🙁 I tried watching "Good Morning, Vietnam" today, and I just can't bring myself to laugh. I'm trying, but it's too sad 🙁

It just makes things worse when I read Amber Benson's tweets about it. The idea of her crying...it's too much.

I honestly don't feel like doing anything today.

This made me so sad 🙁

I've never been a massive fan of his. But when I thought about it, I really do love so many of his movies, I grew up watching them - The Birdcage, Mrs Doubtfire, Hook...even Death to Smoochy, which I know wasn't very popular, but I've always loved it, it cracks me up and Robin is awesome in it.

RIP Robin.
