OK so some of you know that I am in a new relationship (seeing someone) and I think he is very romantic. Especially compared to previous bf's. He buys me flowers, chocolates, pays for takeaways and always buys my girl chocolates when he gets me flowers. He asks how I am and wants to take me away for a relaxing weekend.

This got me thinking....what do others think is romantic? Have you had/got romance in your life and what form does it take? Do you like romance?

:inlove::kissie::rose0::heart:

I don't think my boyfriend is massively romantic but he does loads for me which is equally as nice. I like to be surprised. Flowers for no reason, being taken out for nice meals and generally just being spoilt. It doesn't have to cost money though. A note on my pillow or a quick text is just as nice. I love going on holidays with him too and being on the beach.

Your fella sounds nice Nix and he seems to be making a great effort to not leave Abs out which I think is really good because it shows he's thinking about the future. To me anyway.

thanks hun
My boyfriend can be quite romantic, but you wouldn't think it to look at him.
He surprises me with presents occasionally.
He took me to Belgium for my 20th birthday.
He cooked me a surprise three course meal on Valentines Day.
He organised a surprise party, with all my friends there for my 18th.

Hell looks like I have to find a girlfriend to get included in this thread. Well challenge accpeted! 😀
In general I think romantic is cool but you need some changes too. Romantic, crazzyness, moments where you can freak out. All this makes a relationship.

True! Its not all about traditional romantic items like flowers and chocolate.
Sounds like you've got a great guy, Nix. I'm happy for you.

Me and my husband can be romantic, but we're also great friends (not that one exclude the other). He has done some traditional romantic things for me, like buy flowers and write a song, but the most fun and more appriciated things is more based on how well we know each other. Like two years ago when we lived apart and had our wedding day instead of sending flowers I arranged for a pizza delivery for his apartment. When he got it he called me laughing, 'cause it turns out he had done the exact same thing and my pizza would be delivered one hour later.

I've been thinking whether I should say this or not for very long. How I really see romance. It's not really how I see it, it's more the conclusion I got to from hearing many life stories. The reason I wasn't sure if I should say this, is because it's a very negative way to look at it, and I don't wanna hurt anyone or make anyone doubt their relationship. I'm not a negative person, and I don't want anyone to see me this way, so I hope I don't make anyone feel bad.
Here goes...

As I got to see, in so many cases, the romance is something temporal. In the begining the guy (it's mostly the guy who's being romantic to his girl, but of course there's the other way around, it's just that what I'm going to try to say is mostly true about the guys, don't take it the wrong way, guys) is very romantic with his girl. He makes very big efforts to impress her and make her like him, and be nice to her. And it's all usually very honest and sweet. But as times passes by, and the couple is together for a while, the investment in the relationship fades away. He's not opening the door for her anymore. He doesn't spend money on her or pay for her dinner. He doesn't say sweet things to her ear, he doesn't even want to cuddle. It's like both partners (or just one of them) are putting an effort in the begining of a relationship, and later on it's gone, like it doesn't matter anymore.

To be clear, I'm not saying all couples are like that. Hell, you can see old couples walking in the beach, holding hands. But sometimes romance is gone. And it feels like the couple, or just one of the partners, feels it's not worth it anymore. Like: "she's mine. What do I have to impress her for anymore? What do I have to work for?"
And it's not like that in those cases love is always gone. It's not what I'm trying to say. But the romantic part of the relationship is gone, or almost gone.
If there's real love in a relationship, the romance should last forever. It's part of a love relationship between lovers.
That's the sad part of romance. Now... back to happy!

Lol. My husband is like the least romantic man I've ever met. I only get birthday presents and Christmas presents. I feel like thats fine though, cause he possesses almost every other good trait you can think of. It just doesn't occur to him to do romantic things, and honestly I don't think he even knows what romance is.

Congrats on finding a good one Nix!

There had to have been SOME romance. You married the guy! ;):p:p What....he hit you over the head and throw a sack over ya? Nooooo, I keed.... keed....:p.
First of all the very nature of of the topic of this thread makes me giddy! Thank you Nix!!!

Do I like romance? hahah um... short answer YES YES YES!!!! so much. I love it I love it I love it I love it. I love talking about it, hearing about it....I love it in movies, I love witnessing couples holding hands and I'm maybe one of the few that seeing public displays of affection - just fill me up and make me overjoyed!!!!

My ideas on it may be someone out of the norm though.... I like the flowers and chocolates stuff but that's not really what does it for me....

I guess it's the little and big ways of feeling I'm really KNOWN.... gotten.... understood.... knowing what frightens me and automatically taking an action to soothe me, or knowing exactly how I like my coffee - not by asking just by paying to attention when I order it - stuff like that....

On the other hand (more in line with the flowers and chocolate notion of romance) - and I hesitate to say this cause 'girl power' and all that - which I'm a strong believer in. I have to admit, I love the chivalry stuff. A guy opening a door for me, giving me his coat cause he sees me shivering if we're out walking at night etc....

I am a sucker for having a sudden epiphany that you love someone and the quick turn around, running in the rain, or racing to the airport to catch her - stuff.....

But I also agree with you, chosen enemy, grand romantic gestures often fade to nothing and that is sad. but hopefully the little ones (which honestly I feel mean more) - like fred automatically sharing her coffee with wesley (to bring it to the buffy world for a sec) - that stuff does not

hope this made some sense.

I'm glad to hear HalloweenRain's story. Gives my hope back a little... 🙂
Even though I would probably miss the presents also.

I really can't do the flowers and chocolate thing. Not sure why but I just haven't got it in me somehow. It all just feels very silly and contrived. If I should do it anyway. Others seems to pull it off though.

Not even sure I could fake it if I tried. Would feel so wrong and unfair. Don't think I will ever get so desperate that I would go against my nature like that just to try to impress someone.

As long as you're great in other ways, people will overlook the non-romance havingness.
This is really a tough thread for the singles among us!

I haven't really got much of experience with romance, to be honest. Not sure if it's just the guys I'm attracted to, but none of my 'relationships' (the term might be a bit misleading since I've never been in a relationship, what I mean more is just something that set these guys apart from being my ordinary friends, some involvement) included any romance. Or it might've been the fact that I never actually was in a relationship with them, who knows.

That said, one of the most romantic things I thought I experienced was this past summer (Nix, I might've actually told you when I visited, cos that was going on at that moment...remember that French guy from my work lol?) when I was working in England and just had this amazing chemistry with this guy I met at work. We had this internal messaging system at work we sort of abused for all sorts of personal conversations, and at some point he just kept sending my links to songs. They were all from the genre that makes you feel good about yourself, very flattering. Well anyways, I thought that was kinda romantic. On the other hand, he had a serious girlfriend and was cheating on her, so I guess this is a matter of perspective...

(edit...wow, my life reads pretty pathetic...)

yer I remember hun (hugs)
I just got out of a relationship I was in for four years.

I think the most 'romantic' thing for me, and the thing I miss most about being in a relationship, is the ability to be 100% yourself at all times. You don't need to impress your partner and you can tell them anything. Just sharing all of yourself with someone is what true romance is for me.

"You are far more likely
To be devoured than empowered
By your sense of romance"

And that is all I can say on the subject 😛 not much to say, I'm pretty disenchanted myself but I'm glad to see all your happiness and romances

To me, personally, flowers, chocolates etc. doesn't mean anything to me romantically on their own.

I've been in relationships where the guy did all those things, but it was my friends who actually took the time to listen to me, spend quality time with me and were more sensitive to my feelings and moods. I had stronger feelings for them than I did for the person who was doing the "romantic" gestures for me because although they were making the effort of those gestures, they weren't really taking the time to listen to me or spend time with me in my world.

Sounds like there are a few of us that get spoiled with romance! Lovely to hear!

I consider my boyfriend very romantic. He brings me chocolates and beer 😛 what more could I want!?! He is just a genuine caring person, always cuddling, holding hands, telling me he loves me. He knows exactly what to do when I get sick. He calms me down when I get worried about silly stuff and never makes me feel stupid for getting worried. He opens doors, pulls out chairs, sends me sweet texts all the time. Aw now I miss him!

Old Master 3.0 agrees: There had to have been SOME romance. You married the guy! What....he hit you over the head and throw a sack over ya? Nooooo, I keed.... keed.....

Who told you about the clubbing and the human-sized sack?!

I'm not a particularly romantic person, and my husband wouldn't know romance if it belted him on the side of the head...so we aren't typical "romantics". I always tell him not to buy me flowers/cards/chocolates and to save his money for diamonds. 😀

Really, I think it's the little things, like kittenpoker and others mentioned. He always tells how beautiful I am. He amuses the kids when he's home in the mornings so I can have a cup of coffee in peace. He loves to hold me at night (which I tolerate for a short time.) We go on vacations that he plans. He makes plans to take us out to eat sometimes because he knows I hate cooking. I also like the chivalrous actions: opening doors, pulling out chairs, offering jackets.

The idea of romance doesn't really appeal to me, because it seems really cheesy. Like I'd have to pretend to like the flowers and the nicknames or whatever. I wouldn't mind chocolates, though, coz you can eat them! Then again, I've never really been in a relationship or had a crush on anyone, so who knows (more conservative society, attend single sex school).
