Roseanne Cancelled!

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. I think more people need to understand that. She deserved to be fired from her job.

But do the re runs of her old show deserve to be pulled from syndication? Cause that really
Bothers me. Tvland and other networks have decided to pull the 90s sitcom from the reruns and that’s actually a very good show and has a lot of good themes and good things to say. You dont think that that type of retroactive censorship is an extreme over reaction? House of cards wasn’t even pulled from Netflix I don’t think when Kevin Spacy was fired.

I do not mean to offend but it is so casual here that I surely do, it is not with malicious intent and I am still trying to get my head around how to address our 'black brothers' as my neighbour calls them.
That's the difference really. This tweet is clearly made with malicious intent, it's not a misunderstanding or anything of the sort. She's got an issue of some kind, or wanted to be funny? so decided to go after her based on race.

What's considered acceptable will always vary by country and change over time anyways so I think it best everyone tries to give others the benefit of the doubt and not jump to condemn based on misunderstanding etc.
I agree with your post, why are scots so level headed? you dont look it on tv 😛
This is outrageous, I'm English! We're famous for our level headed ways and it's why we own Scotland.

This is true, we are too rowdy to self govern :p
And since you ignored everything else I wrote, I guess you aren't a supporter of equality then.
That's not fair. Can we not attack people? It was a debate. People are passionate about their opinions. Y'all clearly don't understand each other's point. I know this may not be my place, but you could use a 3rd party.

Anyway I don't see this as an issue of free speech. It's an issue of publicity. It was a flat out racist comment that caused bad publicity for ABC. Someone tweeting that wouldn't get arrested. But a celebrity tweeting that is gonna get recognized. And the punishment was appropriate in order to set an example and save face for ABC. (That sounds bad, but I think that's what it should be and was handled perfectly)

It's really awful for the cast and (particularly) the crew. They went to sleep and had a job. They woke up and they don't have one anymore. All because she could not keep off Twitter.

I guess you aren't a supporter of equality then.
I guess I'm not.
Really? After I've made it clear how delicate the situation is in terms of freedom of speech laws in my country, you simply roll your eyes at me? Whatever.
I can roll my eyes at your pretensions to be under the eye of Big Brother just as easily as you can roll your eyes at generation of people having their basic humanity called into question and being suspected of plotting for world domination. There just wasn't anything left for you in my empathy pool of tears.

This is an American thing. Everybody is SO concerned about appearing politically correct, they'll jump on anyone who dares upset the masses. Unfortuneately, social media influences many, and there's a lot of frightened little sheep who're terrified of being vilified by strangers. I despise people who play "follow the leader," and usually troll the hell out of anyone who jumps on one of these bandwagons.

Roseanne is a comedian. She's ALWAYS said controversial things. But that's what comics do! At least, they used to...until everyone became too afraid to offend ANYONE. Can you imagine Blazing Saddles being released these days?! God, no. People would shit themselves...and begin a campaign to destroy whoever was involved with the film. Actually, no. That film would never be greenlit in the first place.

When I first heard about Roseanne's tweet, I KNEW she was history. Did I think it was racist? Nope. Funny? Oh yes. Advisable? God, no. But like I said before, she's KNOWN for pissing people off. She's been out of the public eye for so long, many people either didn't know or forgot.

Ten or twenty years ago, she might've been reprimanded. There definitely wouldn't have been such a big deal made over this. Sure, the NAACP and Jesse Jackson might've complained, but that's no surprise.

Political correctness is KILLING this world. Mind you, I've never been a fan of Roseanne. She's crass, loud, trashy, and has NO class, whatsoever. I never liked her stand up routines, nor did I watch her show when it first came out. But...I absolutely do NOT agree with the show being cancelled over a tweet. Think of all the writers (and cast members) who suddenly don't have a job. Over this bullshit.

Liberals have found a way around the First Amendment...if someone says something you don't like, call it racist or hate speech.

However, it was racist
After like five seconds of googling I found out that Rosanne was tweeting racist stuff like that already in 2013, comparing POC to apes, so ABC must've known that when they decided her values clicked well enough with theirs like a year or two ago when they decided to bring back Rosanne, i.e. when they got into business with her. Canceling the show now makes it looks like (a. hating jews is still ok) it's ok to be a racist, just don't be public about it while you're currently in business with us.

Yup. To be fair, there were plenty of opinion pieces that were written about this when the show was first announced to return. So while Disney clearly decided it was worth the risk of bad publicity, it's not as if everyone ignored her actions.

But do the re runs of her old show deserve to be pulled from syndication? Cause that really

Plenty of shows are pulled following a scandal. Most quietly return shortly after. I'm sure Roseanne will reruns will be back on air just like 7th Heaven and The Cosby Show.

Oh FFS listen the first amendment has nothing to do with this. The First Amendment gives us the right of free speech (with some rationally related limitations) free from GOVERNMENT prohibition.

I know ABC is owned by Disney and that Disney looks like a govt entity but, in fact, no it’s not. The US government didn’t have anything to do with this show being cancelled. A corporation made a decision to not be affiliated with a person = so no, liberals have not found a way around the first amendment. It seems that people just don’t understand what the first amendment is...

Except freedom is speech is not strictly limited to the first amendment. This is not a first amendment story, but it is a freedom of speech story.

The First Amendment is specifically referenced above.

Yeah, I didn't read far enough.
You know, Roseanne actually had a point. I just saw a meme that shows side by side pictures of that woman and Zira from Planet of the Apes. Guess what? Yep. 😇

When I first heard about Roseanne's tweet, I KNEW she was history. Did I think it was racist? Nope. Funny? Oh yes.
You know that she's apologised for it and blamed sleeping pills for making it in the first place? I don't even get how it's funny if it's not intentionally racist. Surely the gag is that she's not white so an ape/terrorist.
Ten or twenty years ago, she might've been reprimanded. There definitely wouldn't have been such a big deal made over this.
60 or so years ago black people had to use designated colored zones in America. A bit of progress isn't the end of the world.
But...I absolutely do NOT agree with the show being cancelled over a tweet. Think of all the writers (and cast members) who suddenly don't have a job.
Do you think once a network has shown a programme it should be inclined to keep showing it regardless? It's a clear corporate decision that her racism would affect their profit eventually even if ratings were good. Surely that's their call to make right?

Yes, I'm aware of her apology. Oooh, and I'm quite familiar with Ambien! I was tripping balls on that shit, several years ago. 😂 The colours, man! The colours!! 🐍🐒🐘🐲🐝🐞 🐛It's one of the most unpredictable medications out there. Take too much, and you might think you're a unicorn.

It became funnier when I saw the side by side comparison. Now I see that what Roseanne said was actually true. Seriously.

Meh, screw ABC. Of course they can do what they want. It was a wise business decision, given the current climate. It's just that hypocrisy ALWAYS makes me a bit...psychotic. Or is that more psychotic...?

The only thing I could think when I heard that story was that she must be very dumb not to know how to use Twitter in 2018. Even if she says it was a joke (which I don't 100% buy), doesn't she know that you can't use irony or vague joke on Twitter? People will believe that everything you write there is your true opinion as it was shown multiples times before. Sorry but she deserved this to happen to her.

It seems a shame that a whole show is now labeled racist because of the actions of one person (compare with Joss Whedon who can do no wrong and if he does it's all "oh the shows are a group effort, not just his work"... why isn't that a thing here? What about everyone else on the show? Why do they deserve to lose their jobs or for their show not to be aired at all anymore?)

I think the difference, at least to me, is that everyone who worked on the revival could have done the same five minutes of Googling that you did and had an idea that something like this was likely to happen. That would not have been possible with Joss in 1996. Even his wife didn't know what was going on until relatively recently, right?

The people who worked on the Roseanne revival were signing up to work on a show called Roseanne, starring Roseanne, and based on Roseanne's experiences. How much distance could they truly claim to have? I'm not saying that everyone who worked on the show is racist; simply that, for the revival, they had no excuse for not knowing the kind of person Roseanne is.

As for the syndicated episodes being pulled, I'm pretty confident that's not being done to "punish" Roseanne or the rest of the people who made the show. A controversy like this is going to make advertisers nervous, which means they don't want their ads to be aired during reruns of Roseanne. So the TV networks make the call to air a different syndicated show instead. If I'm Coke, why should I have to let my product be potentially associated with these racist remarks?

But again this is not limited to 'black' people so I really don't get the drama. Maybe because I'm not American? Just search for 'George Bush Monkey' and you will be bombarded with memes, videos and articles. So it was done to a freaking President before. That's not racist I take it? To suggest that Bush is down the evolutionary ladder? Pretty sure other white people are also constantly compared to monkeys, apes and gorillas including Trump. Again a President. So it's only racism if it goes one way? But it wouldn't be if all 'black' people called 'white' people animal names?

No offense to anyone across the ocean but that's just cray cray.

I think the different is in history and how the African Americans were treated throughtout the years. There is some deep emotional scars there that cannot be understood or compared to the white american's history. If you take that into account and how the black community had to fight (and still do to this day) for their right to be recognized as equals then yeah it is worst to compare them to monkeys than white people. Someone like Roseanne knows that and this is why she used theses terms in her message.
