So I've been playing Japanese RPGs since I was a kid and had no idea what I was doing with all these menus. But I got into Western RPGs back in 2014, years after I left most Buffy discussions behind me. Not that Buffy's influence was lost on me in, say, BioWare games. If you look at their older games and their more recent work ("recent" being Dragon Age: Origins back in 2009or so), the influence is undeniable and the character of Alistair even had some admitted inspiration from Xander. Goingthrough Season 2, it suddenly hit me like a hammer that Merrill from Dragon Age 2i is totally early series Willow in the adorable, innocent, awkward rambly way they speak. And i wanna hug them both to death I love them so much. DA2 is a....flawed game but I liked it. DA Origins though might be the best WRPG ever, IMO. Certainly BW's best game.

Now, Anne Rice recently passed away and her legendary work influenced probably more vampire media than anything else in modern times. After her, Buffy might be the most influential. But between the two, there was the tabletop RPG Vampire: The Masquerade which I only got into a couple years ago. I do not know if there's any information on if its ideas impacted Buffy's but I will say that the video game Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is one of the best RPGs ever. Not so much for gameplay but for its unbelievable writing and voice-acting. Highly recommend trying it out.

These are just some prelim thoughts on my part. I'm mostly watching Buffy and thinking on that but these are all new opinions from me while I was away the last 12 years. Didn't talk about any of this last time I was here so I'm curious if anyone here likes any of these games?

I used to be a huuuuge gamer in pre-internet times . Did a few JRPGs back in the day but turn based stuff isn't my cup of tea . Much more into action RPGs like the Fallouts , Skyrim and rpg blasters like the Borderlands franchise .

Not really considered 'the Buffy effect' in 21st century gaming ...but it sure sounds interesting 🙂 .

Absolutely.

The only JRPG that I’m really big on is Pokémon, but I love the standard RPG genre. The ability to build a character and work my way through an engrossing world is something I can’t really describe and do justice. Mass Effect 2, Borderlands 2, Skyrim, the Fallout series, and so many more are some of my favorite games of all time.
