Just what is the Rugby World Cup?
The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Rugby Board, and is contested by the men's national teams. The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and it is contested every four years. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world.

The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup. William Webb Ellis was the Rugby School pupil who "“ according to popular myth "“ invented the game by picking up the ball during a game akin to one of the many codes of medieval football. South Africa are the current World Champions, having won the 2007 Rugby World Cup final in France on 20 October 2007 with victory over England, the 2003 World Champions. The next Rugby World Cup will take place in 2011 in New Zealand. The hosts for 2015 and 2019 have been announced as England and Japan respectively.

My parents like to watch the rugby so I imagine I'll be hearing about it a lot. It seems to be more of a subdued hype in the UK generally though, it's not as popular as football seems to be. I hate all sports equally so that's good in my books.

I live with a kiwi so I'll be hearing a lot about it I imagine! I heard at some point while out last night that NZ killed it and I figure from the fact that my housemate still wasn't home when I left for work that he had a good night celebrating!

Hopefully I manage to catch some games - I never say no to a night of hanging out with the boys drinking some pints! It won't be a priority though.

On the day of the 2003 final I was Santa at the local garden centre for our Lions club- we changed the CD player we normally use for playing Christmas music over to the radio and when the final whistle went I was running up and down in my Santa suit, nearly knocking a small child over in the process. The following year I went to see the Webb Ellis Trophy when it came to our local rugby club.

Then again, my friend Chris plays rugby and is of the school of thought that rugby is (or should be) an eight-hour drinking session with some running around on a field in the middle thrown in.

It suucckssss. I recorded Saturday's England match and waited for my uncle to get home from work so we could all watch it together, and it is SO hard to avoid score spoilers! I managed so well, and I was half way through watching it and my Blackberry buzzed because I had an email. Not thinking about it I checked it and lo and behold, RFU Direct sent me an email "To celebrate Englands 13-9 win..."

I was SO MAD 😛

Next one is at 7 in the morning so it's gonna be even worse. I'll be buggered if I'm getting up at 7am on a sunday!

Also, England FTW! (Well, if they get their act together...)

Australia, you are one of my very favourite places to be in the world but can I just say, SUCK IT!

Great game this morning, the Irish performance was immense! Next Sunday can't come quick enough. 🙂
