Sacrifing Joyce

if Joyce hadn't died in season 5 and since she knew what was going on with Glory (sort of )...do you think she would have sacrificed herself to save her daughters?

Buffy would have never let her do that. And you gotta admit Joyce sacrificing herself wouldn't have had the same impact on everyone. After all Buff is the hero of the show, not Joyce.

I think if given the option she would have without a second thought but I really don't think she would have been in the right place to act on it even if she wanted to.

Yeah I think Joyce would have without a doubt sacrificed herself for her daughters. But Buffy never would have let her. Plus, I love Joyce but her death wouldn't have had the impact as Buffy's does. In The Body its perfect, its so sad and everyone mourns her. But to make it this big gesture, sacrificing herself, it wouldn't have had the same effect on the audience as Buffy doing it for Dawn.

Joyce would NOT have been able to sacrifice herself to close the portals. She didn't share the blood with the key. Dawn was made from Buffy not Joyce. I also don't believe it would have had the impact it did with Buffy. TBH, the ending of 'The Gift' was PERFECT and had it been up to me, it would have been the series finale as originally promoted by the WB.

Joyce may have tried, but Buffy wouldn't let her. She'd be all like "I'm the slayer, it's MY responsibility."

Sure, on a chromosomal level but it's not exactly the same. Supposedly, according to Buffy, they share the SAME blood, indicating that Buffy's blood was connected to the key. Joyce's blood while sharing a few similar strands of DNA isn't a perfect match as Buffy's so it wouldn't be the same as Dawn's either and not linked to the key.

I don't think it would have worked if Joyce jumped. Dawns blood came directly from Buffy. Children don't directly inherent their parents blood. Children and parents can have different blood types.

That would have made for an anti climatic episode. Joyce decides to go out in a moment of glory and jumps into the huge portal of doom in order to save her daughters. And nothing happens. =O

I also don't believe it would have worked. Buffy's blood, which Dawn was made from, was a combination of Joyce's and Hank's blood, not just Joyce's. In my opinion, the reason Buffy's blood worked was because it was exactly Buffy's blood. Siblings and relatives don't share the exact same blood, they share a similar DNA (and even the DNA is not exactly the same).

If Joyce was able to jump to save Buffy and Dawn I still don't know if she would. I highly doubt she would have been around to save them anyway. Possibly Joyce would have run much sooner with Dawn and Buffy, not just waiting for Glory to find out.

Interesting idea, I think it was discussed somewhere around here before.

I think Joyce would do that, if she had the idea what's going on. They kinda left her in the loop over the years, she found out what's happening after it happened.

Joyce would of done anything for Buffy and Dawn. I'm glad Joyce went the way she did and when she did. I don't think seeing her grieve aswell for Buffy would of benefited us as a audience, seeing Buffy's grief to her losing her mother and all her friends around her was beautifully done.

I agree The Body is one of my favorite episodes because of the harsh way it was filmed and I loved to see the characters react to her death. I cried a hella lot in that episode. Joyce went out at a good time.

I think that without a doubt, Joyce would have been willing to give her own life to save her girls. We saw it in "School Hard", that when it comes down to it Joyce is willing to do what she needs to keep her daughter(s) safe. That being said, I don't think that ever would have been able to happen. Not with the dynamic that was written between Buffy and Joyce, anyway.

Whenever some Big Bad was brewing in Sunnydale, Buffy would send Joyce away. Even if Joyce had been there when Dawn was kidnapped, Buffy would have never let her help get her back. It'd be too much of a distraction for her. And Joyce understood that she wasn't fit to be fighting vampires, so did what was best for her daughter and got out of the way. She wouldn't have been willing to risk loosing both daughters because they died having to protect her.

Not only that, but nobody really knew that anyone but Dawn could close the portal until right at the end of "The Gift" when Buffy figures it out. With Joyce's limited knowledge of the supernatural I doubt she would have even thought to jump. And that's if she had somehow managed to climb up that tower in good time, without being thrown off by the Lizard Man.

So yes, I do think that if someone had given her the choice Joyce would have jumped. But that just really wasn't an option with how she had been written into the series up until that point. All in all I'm sort of glad that she went the way she did, that it wasn't something supernatural that killed her. Buffy lost so much over the years to her slaying, it would have been a real blow for her to lose her mother because of it too.

Yes of course she would have, Joyce wouldn't have hesitated to give her life for her beloved daughters just as Buffy sacrifices herself for Dawn and Dawn attempts to jump off Glory's tower to save Buffy and the rest of the world. The Summer's girls love one another beyond all🙂
