This is a topic worth discussing so what the heck, let's try it again. Can we stay on topic this time?

Reports: Saddam Executed in Baghdad

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writers

Friday, December 29, 2006

(12-29) 19:40 PST BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) --

Saddam Hussein has been hanged, state-run television reported Saturday. "Criminal Saddam was hanged to death," state-run Iraqiya television said in an announcement. The station played patriotic music and showed images of national monuments and other landmarks.

A U.S. judge on Friday refused to stop Saddam's execution, rejecting a last-minute court challenge.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said U.S. courts do not have jurisdiction to interfere in another country's judicial process. The ruling can be appealed, but it was issued within an hour of the time Iraqi officials said they expected the execution to be carried out.

Saddam and others were convicted of murder in the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims from an Iraqi town where assassins tried to kill Saddam in 1982.

Also to be hanged were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.

OMG that is soo good... im so glad he has been hung... i cant belive he did the things he did.. he deserves what he got.. actually he deserves to be tortured but at least hes not here to do anymore damgage or harm

Is there a question to this topic or do we create our own discussion?

You cannot tell people that murder is wrong and then murder their old murderous leader. What lesson is learnt? Don't screw with whomever has most power?

Here's the thing though. Did the Americans execute Saddam, or was he tried in an Iraqi court, and sentenced to death under Iraqi law? Officially it's the latter.

We removed Sadam from power because his way of doing things was unjust. We justify his methods by condoning his punishment. Officially, might satisfy locutus of the borg( or whatever the f**k that quote is) , unoffically, any government allowed to function in Iraq will only be through the domination of the US and the complete loyalty to said superpower.

It's scary how many people (even like in the west, not only in Iraq, though I'd understand them more) are going "yay he's killed". Again, I was no fan of the guy, but I am 100% against capital punishment, and it's scary when people go "yay" over murdering someone.

I said it before and I will say it again. A tyrant was removed and Iraq has become a democratic country. They must discover, debate and decide what best works for them and their idea of democracy.
We cannot force a Reader's Digest version of democracy on them or we are just replacing one tyrant for another. And the west will come off looking like hypocrit's to force our beliefs onto Iraq while hiding behind the excuse of that is what democracy is.
Maybe someday Iraq will abolish the death penalty maybe they won't but look how long it took the west to abolish the death penalty, what 200 or so years?

I didn’t want him killed, in my eyes that’s not a punishment well it is but I know what I mean. He should have been jailed for life, with no way of ever being released then he would have actually suffered for his crimes. Before I read the things he’d done I felt a little bad for him, but I guess it’s a good thing that the world is rid of him.

i didn't want him killed either, sure he's a complete asshole, but no one deserves to die, no matter how horrible you are
You'd have to be stupid to think that we won't be blamed for his death. They all hate us already. Who would they hold responsible: themselves, or the backwards, liberal, sex-before-marriage having bastards (us)

a tyrant was removed from power and a country has been on the verge of civil war ever since.

whilst at the same time the people patting themselves on the make for removing this man do nothing against other such dictators because its not the best political strategy.

dictatorship removed and Anarachy installed. These are two extremes just as bad as each other.

It was a complete waste of time.

I think it is difficult to understand this from any other cultural perspective than your own. By that I mean that although people may be opposed to capital punishment, and think that he should have been imprisoned for life, the purpose for such a punishment is surely to feel remorse for what you have done.

If he showed no remorse (and it's fairly certain he never would have as he felt he had committed no crime) then what is the point of imposing a Western style punishment of life incarceration in an Arabic/Muslem state? If their choice of punishment is death, then that is what we should accept, regardless of whether we agree with it in principle.

If Iraqi culture dictates death is the correct punishment for his crimes, it seems to me that it is the fact that it took Western help to overthrow him, track him down and imprison him that sits ill with people, not the actual punishment. If it was done without any help, there would be hardly any interference from the West (unless of course he had been a friendly Dictator serving Western interests, but that's another story, and a previous decade)

It may be a mess over there, but you cannot escape the fact that a large proportion of the country wanted him gone because he had persecuted them. All we can do is help clear up the mess (and I don't mean the farce that is going on there now - we need a more practical solution) which we have a responsibility to do, not because of what is going on now, but because if the West had done the job properly in the first 'Gulf' War and sanctions hadn't had to be imposed which killed hundreds of thousands of Iraquis through starvation, there would be far less resentment and infighting between sects now.

Rant over.

Oh and one more wholly inappropriate line

"ding dong the witch is dead, the witch is dead, the witch is dead, ding dong the wicked witch is dead" 😉

I'm not really against the death sentence, but I do think it's used a little too often. And even when I think the person deserves to die, I don't think people should revel in the death.

The other day I was parking a car at work and it was on Rush Limbaw or whatever the guy's name is, and he and a caller were talking about how fantastic and GREAT the execution was, and how they wanted to see it in HD and stuff. That's pretty f*cked up, and the fact so many people enjoy watching him die on the Internet is extremely disturbing and doesn't speak highly of our so-called civilized culture.

my only comment on the matter: what goes around...(eventually gets you hanged 😉 )

It impossible to say he didn't deserve it, the guy what was comeing to him. And it would have been so pointless to keep him alive, and spend money on him, that would have been such a huge waste.

True true, but it's still sick how people are reacting to it. 🙂

Although I don't believe in people "deserving" this or that, either it's something good or bad.. what you're saying is basically true in my opinion. However, I don't think your opinion or my opinion or anyone else's is interesting here. Bottom line is to me that's killing people can't be justified. Capital punishment isn't a solution.

Not about him not deserving it, it's what his death will bring about. He's now a martyr and an excuse for more people to die. If they had kept him alive in acell, he would have had less influence.

Probably. But he still might have been considered a symbol of defiance or whatever, just rotting away in his cell. He's a martyr for a certain amount of Iraqi Sunnis, right? And any Baathists still around. Some Palestinians. But most Iranians and Saudis and Kuwaitis and Kurds say good riddance.

Think I read that Libya had official days of mourning for him...
