Now this observation in no way is meant to compare these two men!!! Nelson Mandela was more then just a guy to his followers. A martyr slips into obscurity over time. But an individual in jail can feed hope to his followers that maybe someday they will free their leader from prison. Whereas it is pretty hard to free a martyr from his prison isn't it?

But a martyr doesn't slip into obscurity. A dead man can stand for anything. Dead he becomes a hook to hang any vaguely related nutcase cause on. It doesn't matter what or who he actually was now, because in past tense he can be revised to suit whatever the task at hand.

Sorry, guys, but on this situation your worries about the death of Saddam making him a martyr are totally rendundant. The people who you are worried about don't need a martyr to do what they want to do. They have their religious beliefs already. That gives them all the excuse they need to commit whatever acts they feel justified.
Saddam alive or dead makes no difference. Will they use his execution as an excuse for the next terrorist act they commit? Maybe so. But that is all it will be. These attacks are being planned as we speak and they will happen as and when they see fit. You really think that keeping Saddam alive would have stopped them from killing again? Think again.

Also to expand on that IF he was kept alive they would use that to kidnap someone to free him, well it woulda been possible,plus now he is dead, Those who had children relatives and husbands,wives etc killed by his orders now have the justice they deserve

Very true. Eventually somebody would try to have him freed if he had lived. Who knows how many would suffer in such an action.

Okay, last night I was totally pissed and yet still managed to post here and avoid any typos. Today I'm just a little hungover but manage to type "rendundant"?!?!?

I didn't read all the replies to this topic, mostly because I don't care. My views are that people shouldn't be upset he was put to death. It wasn't a cruel or unusual punishment. Think of the way he killed his own people. It was 5x worse than being hung. Even though I'm not skipping down the yellow brick road singing, "ding dong saddam is dead," (as far as i can remember), I am happy he's dead.
This is how I think of capital punishment, it's good unless the person repents and all that. Think about it. Someone murders and rapes all your female family members in the worst way possible. Would you really want to give them the right to life? They get to sit in a sell and eat, drink, breathe, move, feel emotion, read, sing along to Danity Kane...welll not the last one but whatever. I'd rather them be killed and sent to Hell so their real punishment can begin.
