Saddam gets a 'suspended' sentence:)

About time? 😉

I realise that the process had to be carried out but this was about as unexpected an outcome as sticking your hand into a fire and discovering that it's kinda hot. The guy should have been hung a long time ago.

Hmm.

The issues with this, to me anyway, are this.

Executing someone for whatever reason, violates the most fundamental of all human rights, the right to life. This surely condones all that Saddam did.

Saddam has valuable knowledge that we don't know. Who knows what he did with his WMD. Kill him and we are riding ourselves of a valuable historical resource, and knowledge that might protect us.

Life is pain, why spare him?

My personal belief is that no one has the right to take another persons life.
I have absolutely no issue with Saddam Hussein being forced to spend the rest of his life in Prison with a small hatch for food and water and a TV/Video combo with Southpark the Movie on constant repeat.

If there is an afterlife, then all you are doing is sending him there quicker, if there isn't one, you are ending his life so he really isn't paying for his 'sins' in a real sense.

No, I believe he should be forced to spend the rest of his life in Prison then die, becoming a Martyr to some.

I will bet that the execution will be online though...and i'll watch it:cheerlead

OH! Ok, I thought you wanted him to watch it everyday because it was torturous
The thing with me is that I'm kind of an eye for an eye sorta guy. You treat me with respect and that is all you will ever get in return. You push me and I push back. It's pretty much how I've been since I was a kid.

I have the same opinion when it comes to issues such as this. When it comes to murderers I absolutely believe in the death sentence. Of course, this should only be done in cases that are watertight with absolutely no doubt as to the person's guilt but when the verdict is certain then I believe that if you have willingly taken another life then you have given up the right to your own.

In Saddam's case he has given up that right thousands of times over and if it were left to me then I would have no second thoughts about what needed to be done with him.

As for whatever information that he has, chances are he will give it anyway before the end in an attempt to gain a litlte more time. If not then I'm certain that there will always be others who know anything he could tell anyway.

Yeah that's pretty much my opinion. I'm no fan of Saddam, but I don't think anyone "deserves" to die or should be killed for what they did. I'm not going to lose sleep over this but, yeah, I'm pretty much all against capital punishment..

Don't agree with this though 'cause I pretty much don't believe in punishment as a way of "paying for your sins". I just think that for the safety of like.. everyone else.. Saddam should be locked away forever.

Moi aussi!
I think if you take a life you forefit your right to live. It would be a waste of tax payers money to keep him in prision for the rest of his life!

Could not agree more. Every crumb of food that goes into that guy's mouth to keep him alive is a waste and could be given to somebody who actually deserves to live.

I could not agree more. Which is why capital punishment is wrong.

I have a similar philosophy. Mines is more an extension of this. It goes something like, 'you push me and I'll knock you the f**k out, c**t'.

Yeah, sounds about right, hehe. My version is just quicker to type and requires less use of the shift key. 🙂

I do not believe in sentancing someone to death. I think it is wrong. I think it would be much more painful to just send him back into his little hole to live out the rest of his life in solitude. As much as he has ****ed us over, and no matter how vile a man he is, I still dont believe anyone has the right to kill him. They aren't god, Dzhugashvili is. He should be the only one who gets to decide who lives and who dies.

Woah woah woah, hold on now. I liked the South Park movie... now Base-ketball... That's a different story 🙁

I liked Southpark: Bigger, Longer and Uncut......I would make Saddam watch it for eternity because he is in it:)
I've been avoiding this thread because I'm not sure what to say. Somewhere between 'about time' and 'oh... um... okay then.' It doesn't bother me, but I certainly don't agree with it. In Saddam's circumstances, however... I definetly don't like him... I don't want him to be around... but... all you have to do is stick him in a cell for the rest of his life and it's likely he'll just end up finding some was to kill himself. Not that that's good either, but it would save some rope. 🙂

In some places they hang murderers. In others they don't. It doesn't bother me either way.

The thing I found entertaining about the whole Sadaam trial thing was the guy's attitude. He seemed to think he was still in charge. It was the same way with what's his name, the guy from Yugoslavia. When these Dictators get nabbed, they just can't seem to grasp the idea they're not the biggest bear in the forest any more.

It's going to be kind of cute when they finally slip the noose over Sadaam's neck. I'll bet there's going to be a look on in his face like, "OK. I get it now".

rep for your use of the word 'cute' and 'Sadaam' in the same sentence...

Milosevic?
First of all, I absolutely oppose the Death Penalty. We don't get to pick which murders we're okay with.

Second of all, I think it's quite dementedly ill-judged to make a martyr out of this man, or to have made such a circus out of his downfall. He doesn't deserve that kind of significance.

Well at least he got a fair trial. Really can't say that for the people he decided to execute without giving it a second thought.
As for the afterlife I hope there is because I couldn't help but think of the movie Little Nicky when he was sentenced to hang. In the movie Hitler was in a French maids costume and everyday the devil (Harvey Keitel) would shove a pineapple up his ass. I'm thinking baby-doll burka and bowling ball.

Watched an interesting episode of Star Trek: Voyager this afternon where the Death Penalty was the focus, it was called Repentance.

Best line in it that sums up my feelings entirely.

"Killing someone is wrong, no matter who does it"

Are you saying his death with turn him into a martyr? Because I don't agree. Those people who will cause mayhem and murder, will do so whether he is alive or not. I think the sceptre of his tyrannical reign still looms over Iraq while he lives, and while I oppose the death penalty, I think that perhaps it would be best for the progression of Iraq if he is executed.

See, your point was a little lost in your suggestion that there exists an episode of Voyager that was interesting. 😉

True enough. Doesn't matter what they do with him. Free, locked up, dead, he will always have his loyal followers ready to die for him, no matter what.

Anyone else think those loyal to him will blame us for his death? What happens then? 9/11 cont...

Those loyal to him are going to try attack us no matter what. Saddam's death may give them another excuse but they are more than capable of finding reasons to blow us up on their own. The events of 9/11 may well happen again but it won't be because of Saddam, alive or dead. It will be because they want to kill, simple as that.
