These two heroes sacrificed themselves for the safety and protection of others, but who's death was a sadder sacrifice?

Allen Francis Doyle's in "Hero"
or
Buffy Anne Summers's in "The Gift"

Buffy, hands down. As heroic as Doyle's sacrifice was, it's hard to compare the two. Buffy's sacrifice was after we spent 100 episodes becoming obsessed with her and becoming invested in everything she did. And seeing her jump meant the world being taken away. Doyle was in nine episodes and we still didn't know much about him. Also Buffy saved the world from eternal hell. Doyle saved a boat full of people from being zapped.

Buffy came back. Doyle didn't. Buffy was happy where she ended up after she died. We never see what happened to Doyle. Considering how Spike was in danger after he sacrificed his own life in "Chosen", a glorious hero's death does not necessarily guarantee a great afterlife, so Doyle may have faced an unpleasant afterlife. I would say Doyle had the sadder sacrifice because his afterlife may have gotten worse than his life.

Buffy. Not only because I care about her more than Doyle but everything about Buffy's sacrifice scene is sadder than Doyle's. We have the touching song named 'sacrifice' playing in the background, a rising sun. I think I'd shed a tear if Warren had been jumping with a scene like that lol.

Buffy saved the world, Doyle saved a few thousand people. There's no comparison really. We care more about a lead character than a tertiary character, her death was sadder because the odds were higher, so our emotions are already heightened.

I personally cried more when Doyle sacrificed himself. I guess because I knew Buffy was going to come back, it lessened the effect of her sacrifice. Doyle didn't just sacrifice himself, he also transferred his powers to Cordelia, which meant he was never coming back, and the last scene with Angel and Cordelia watching old videos of Doyle... let's just say I finished all the tissues in the house.

Had BtVS ended with The Gift - Buffy. Since she came back, I go for Doyle. To me, Hero is to Angel, what The Body was to Buffy, total tear-jerker regardless of how many times I've watched it over the years.
