Saddest Part of Buffy Ending

What was the saddest part about BTVS coming to an end for you? I know for me it was plain and simple no more Buffy. I still got my Spike fix on Angel but it wasn't the same. I loved ATS but somehow it just made me miss BTVS and Spuffy more. It was very upsetting to me watching the closing credits after chosen which I think was the worst part of all. And watching Buffy see Spike burn alive with tears in her eyes.

The saddest thing about the end of Season 7, to me, was that there was never any real closure to the final episode. Look at the ending of "Serenity," or the second season epilog of "Dollhouse." All that we got from "Chosen" was the survivors standing beside a school bus, looking at a huge hole. Anya was dead, Spike, for all that Buffy knew, was dead, and more than a few of the new Slayers were dead. It wouldn't have been out of place, in my opinion, to have had a brief scene, after the adrenalin rush of battle, and the exhilaration of surviving, when the gang acknowledged and payed a little respect to the ones who never made it out of the hellmouth.

Anya's death for me. She was my favourite in Season Seven, by -far- and I do wish that people would care more about her death- I'm not asking for big, fat tears, but like, in Not Fade Away, when Angel finds out Wesley died- he pauses and looks down. Anya is the solider who never got a gigantic gesture of sacrifice in Chosen as Spike did, she's not in the 'superpower' zone, she's a 'civillian'- I mean, for that I praise the realism for it but really? Giles not caring? Who was really close to Anya in S5 and S6? Or Xander who was freakin' engaged to her? Or even Willow, who went well out of her way in Selfless, defied Buffy's plan, to save Anya?

It's sad to see a favourite character for well over 4 seasons die, and for no one to really care.

You're so right. Anya was one of my favorite characters throughout the series. It would have been almost impossible for writers to capture Emma Caulfields charm in the comics though (Which is a compliment to her and the character). I wish Anya got a better finishing Arc. If given half a chance she could have had an epic arc but I think it really got overshadowed by the potentials arrival. Which is a real shame.

I think Anya dying was deliberatly downplayed by Joss, that was kind of the point. he was saying that not everybody dies a hero's death and gets the recognition they deserve. 🙁

I guess saddest part was not seeing what happened next, not having any main character guest star in 'Angel' season 5, having the Scoobies fly off to Europe while they dump Faith off at the nearest Hellmouth (that always makes me sad), and poor, poor Mr Gordo- oh, how I weep for him...

It's interesting reading this thread, because I disagree with a lot of it 😛 I loved Anya's death (and yes I like her character). It was sad, but everyone knew there was going to be casualties, the gang was prepared for that, and in the end I think everyone knew she might not make it. Xander's talk with Andrew was someone positive, but it was a reaction that I liked. I don't think you need to cry and mourn a death to show that you care. I think people did care, but they had just won what might have been their last battle at the time, I'm happy we got something positive out of it.

To me, in my mind I got almost full closure (which is rare for any TV show's finale). It would have been nice to see the future, but I liked this ending better. The final shot is just great, seeing Buffy genuinely smile for the first time in how long, perfect way to end the series.

So now for the actual answer, the saddest part of the finale was just that it was the last episode, and that there was no more Buffy after that. But I honestly wouldn't trade that episode for anything, and it's still to this date the one episode I remember watching for the first time very clearly in my mind, and how epic everything felt. Not only that, but the episode succeeded very well in making me happy about the future, so I didn't have too much time to be sad during this ep.

For me, the saddest part of Buffy ending was how horribly they screwed up season 7 and what that means for Buffy's legacy as a series. I think ending a series right is very important, and in my opinion they goofed the entire last season including the finale. Everything up to and including season 5 is pure bliss, but after this point starts the slow descent into mediocrity and series devolution. For me, the saddest part of Buffy ending was what the series could have been, but wasn't......

I also was really heartbroken over Anya's death and that moment when Andrew is telling Xander.

The saddest part of Buffy ending for me is Willow and Kennedy being the surviving couple. I know that Joss wanted the show to end with one of the Scoobies in a relationship, and I appreciate that decision, but I wish Willow was either alone or back together with Tara at the end because I don't see W/K as endgame. I know it's not suppose to be but I wish Joss would put a lot more thought into making a new love interest for Willow after killing off Tara.

But on the bright side, one thing that makes me feel better is the fact that Alyson Hannigan is married to someone I approve in the form of Alexis Denisof.

The saddest part for me was the last season being such a complete waste of time and emotional investment that I sometimes wish it never happened, mainly because of creators not gathering their sh*t together to realize : 'for the love of God, we are writing/scripting the LAST season of something so epic it will likely outlive not both our 401K's and retirement plans but the television as we know it'. Instead of giving Buffy the ending it needed, they went for the (remaining after 70+ % drop) audience gratification. Thus we got Spike the Vampire S1 where it should have been Buffy the Vampire Slayer S7.

I'd agree with all of that apart from I don't approve of Alexis Denisof. I've nothing against him, he's just not me. 😉

In terms of characters, Buffy thinking she was actually going to be a normal girl at the end.

In terms of the show, the sad thing was the show that spent years showing us that strong is just being you are ended by defining a person's strength only by their physical capabilities. Sadder still, Buffy convincing herself that pointlessly forcing the same power onto 2000 women that was forced onto her by three men, was a choice.

Buffy was created to fight back against misogynist ideals, and in the end it embraced them. That's the saddest thing of all.

I agree entirely with what Ladydorotea has to say, but would add that Season 1 was better than Season 7. In part because the story was about a core few characters not 5-6 main characters, a few minor pointless ones like Andrew and a load of recurring whingers.

"The Gift", Season 5 finale had a greater emotional impact, and actually required Buffy to save the world. The Season 7 Finale "Chosen" didn't even require Buffy, Spike, Angel nor any of the main scoobies. All it required was for a call to Riley, to ask for a single B61 nuclear bomb from his STRATCOM buddies in the US military, to drop it down the hellmouth hole. Potential human casualties? Zero.

At which point we would have seen about the same thing the magical amulet created, a subsistence crater(see video below) and even if you really ask yourself what the amulet is, you'd conclude it is a high energy dense material with the power to shine like a piece of the core of the sun, AKA a thermonuclear weapon, right?

Saddest part was no more Buffy.

I'm not into the comics so this was really the end for me. Loved how strong Buffy was near the end and she was a great leader. Really loved her and Faith making up. Her and Angel one last moment in the final 2 episodes was great too. Perfect ending to the best show in TV history to me.

Spike finally getting his moment too, proving that he COULD be good and that he really cared for Buffy was great and sad. Him sacrificing himself for Buffy and her friends, showed his true colors.
