Found this on Wikipedia:

Sarah has revealed her phobia of being buried alive. She has said "I really fear graveyards and I have a big phobia of being buried alive. It was really hard being an ass-kicking vampire slayer when you are afraid of graves."[52]

Funny, eh?
 
I can totally understand...I remember in Heroes, (SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE END OF SEASON 2)
when Hiro buried Adam alive
, I was super wigged. Still, I've never seen anyone so afraid of it that they got freaked out just by being in cemeteries. Poor Sarah!

That's true. So technically, it's not a phobia, since phobias are irational fears. Being afraid of being buried alive is therefore not a phobia

Being afraid of being buried alive with Barry Manilow tunes playing, on the other hand, is.


Anyway, poor Sarah. I wonder if overexposure to graveyards helped her. It is a legitimate remedy (Arachnophobes being dumped into a room with loads of spiders and so on ^^)

No, I'd say that's one of the MOST rational ones.
Interesting. Edgar Allen Poe also suffered from an intense fear of being buried alive. Of course, back in his day, that was a lot more likely to happen. Some graves even came with bell pulls and the like so that if it did happen, you could ring for help.

Now, I'd say it's more of an irrational fear than a rational fear. You might make it to the morgue fridge barely alive, but you're leaving the morgue as dead as a doornail. I mean, they either burn you into ashes or suck out all of your blood and replace it with embalming fluid, cap your eyes shut, sew your lips shut, etc... so you're pretty certain to be dead by the time they get you into the urn or into the casket. I'd be more afraid of being cremated or embalmed alive than being buried alive.
 
My biggest fear is not being able to breathe, so being buried alive includes that. I'm guessing that's what that fear is about, not being able to breathe, to death. I don't think it has to do with the fact that it's a grave in a graveyard. But I could be wrong. Because if I remember it correctly, Sarah was really afraid of graveyards, and they were shooting the series in a real cemetery in the first season.
 
One would think, nowadays with all our fancy-shmanchy techology, they'd check and see if we're dead first before they send us to the morgue. I can understand back in the day but now...?

Yeah, I think it has more to do with suffocating then actually being buried alive. Or the darkness. Or that fact that you've been abandoned and no one can save you or hear your screams. Graveyards are often quite deserted.
 
I just hate confined spaces. I wouldn't say I'm claustrophobic, lifts don't really bother me or anything, but a tight space would be horrible. If I couldn't move my arms....eugh. I think that one's rational enough.
 
For me it's not so much the not breathing that would be scary...but rather being trapped in a small, dark space knowing you're about to die...

No, it's irrational. How big is the chance? I mean, WHO OWNS BARRY MANILOW RECORDS? They should all be dead by now ^^


Anyway, I'm also really afraid of slowly suffocating or something like that. While being buried alive, for example. With an extra stress on the slowly, cos I'm not really afraid to die. It would suck pretty hard, but that's not what I'm afraid of. It's the feeling that you're going to die and that you can't do anything about it which scares me to death (haha)
 
It would be awful, but if you were Uma Thurman you'd be able to punch your way out :tongue: I think for me it would eb the thought of loads of earth on top of me and no-one would be able to know you were alive or even have a remote chance you'd get out. Creepy..
