Sarah Michelle Gellar may be back on the small screen next fall as the star of a new half-hour comedy, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The potential (and currently untitled) series, which is being developed at 20th Century Fox TV (home of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), chronicles the hijinks parents get into while their kids are at home.
Gellar would play the wife/mother.


The actress "” who attempted a TV comeback last year with The CW's now-cancelled Ringer "” became interested in the project after reading the Shepard Boucher-penned spec script. (Boucher's credits include serving as a staff writer on the TBS comedy Men at Work.)
The project will be shopped to the major networks in the coming weeks.


David Hemingson (How I Met Your Mother, Don't Trust the B"”- in Apartment 23) and Margaret Riley (Love and Other Drugs) are attached as exec producers.
A 20th rep declined to comment for this story.

It's very very early stages, but it could be intresting, I can't picture her in a 30 min sitcom, but she was funny playing a parody of herself on Grosse Point, but comedy wouldn't be my first thought with her.
 
Seriously? A comedy?

But then, all of S6 was a complete joke so it just might work. 😉

I actually think she'd be good in a sitcom. I don't know how interested I'll be in this, sitcoms lately just seem to be repeats of each other. The only sitcoms I like currently are The Big Bang Theory. Otherwise I'd prefer to watch older sitcoms.
 
Huh, this I was not expecting. Still, it's cool to see her back on T.V., if it comes to that of course, and if she does, she's enough of a draw for me that I'll give whatever it is a shot.

Still, it's a little hard to picture her in that type of role. For some reason I keep thinking of Claire Dunphy in Modern Family.
 
I can't see her wanting to do a comedy, unless she has got over her thing of being to self conscious about laughing on screen.

I thought exactly the same thing, that character is played so over the type it has never seemed comfortable to me, I think Sarah will be the same way in a comedy role, kinda disconnected from the character but it still kinda works. Well it works on Modern Family cuz its such a ensemble cast, hopefully they'll do the same with this if it goes to production.

Well the actors in a comedy sitcom dont generally laugh in a sitcom, the people at home do.

"The people at home do." Not usually -- or at least I don't! :P (I haaate sitcoms...)
I'm really excited about these news actually. I can totally picture her in a comedy and I would love to see her take a stab at a sitcom, I think she could be great in it! So go Sarah, is what I say and hope that this comes to fruition 😀

This sounds awful. So it's just a typical family sitcom?
 
I think she could be a good comedic actor. I mean her comedic timing in Buffy was really good, and she did a good job with the comedy in Scooby Doo... I think she could do a wonderful job.

Just as I did with Ringer, I'm going to keep an open mind and be freakishly excited Sarah's gonna be back on TV where she belongs.

I actually think she could do a great job. As Buffy, she had a very ironic side so who's to say she won't bring it on the screen?

I do watch different sitcoms, The Big Bang Theory (genius), How I Met Your Mother (another gem, I'm now at season 4) and Apartment 23 (brilliant)...they all have something special though so they better give this sitcom something that sets it apart. They cancel shows like they change socks so really...
 
I'm definitely going to keep an open mind about this. I think Sarah could definitely pull it off, she's great with comedic timing in Buffy and her other works. 🙂
 
It's hard to picture SMG in a comedy, but that doesn't mean she'd be bad at it. "Simply Irresistible" was pretty cute and considered a romantic comedy, and she was very charming in that...
 
I've no problem imagine SMG doing comedy.
BtVS has always foremost been a funny show to me. That's why I love it. And SMG was always funny in it imho.

Those family sitcoms are rarely funny though. They are often okay, but usually just bland.

But if anything happens with this I will most likely give it a try. Always fun to see SMG and you never know. They might manage to get it right. It has happen after all.

Tiny (itsy bitsy) bit more on the plot

I hear the untitled project, from up-and-coming writer Shepard Boucher (Men At Work), chronicles the hijinks of two moms, one played by Gellar, while their kids are at school. ICM Partners-repped Boucher wrote the project on spec. The agency, which also reps Gellar, showed it to the actress who liked it and came on board. In part because of Gellar's relationship with 20th TV chairman Dana Walden going back to Gellar's says on the studio's drama Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the project was set up at 20th TV, which put in development. Studio-based writer-producer Dave Hemingson came on as showrunner and is supervising the rewrite, which is being done right now. The project will then be taken out, likely as part of the traditional January spec season. This is the second consecutive time that Geller has boarded a script by young writers following Ringer, created by Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder. She and Boucher are managed by Brillstein Entertainment whose Margaret Riley and JoAnne Colonna serves as exec producer alongside Hemingson and Gellar.

I'm glad you used the word generally. Given that we don't get many comedies from Britain or America, and of those I have seen, I can't think of one that never has any of the shows characters laughing (to some degree).
How did/do the audience know when to laugh?
Canned laughter used to be used a lot, and it still is. Some shows preferred to have characters in the show laughing, such as Rosanne (Barr). Two of the regulars of that show are in Big Bang Theory, and they laugh on screen.
The show 'Rosanne' was where an up and coming writer was first noticed by several studio execs., his name was/is Joss Whedon.
So could you please say which comedies the characters don't laugh, and I'll see if I can find the show on the internet, I'll watch it.

I didn't say characters dont laugh, but the characters laughing isn't usually to make the audience laugh, like in this

It's filmed in front of an audience, but I think they use a laugh track. The characters laugh in this clip, but's it's were their character is laughing at another, it's not to tell the audience to laugh, the rest of the jokes have the laugh track

No laugh track, no characters laughing to prompt the audience to laugh

Also no laugh track, the audience can decide when to laugh they don't have to be told, some comedies choose to use a laugh track, but I can't think of any that use the characters laughing as the main prompter
 
Being hired by Joss means you have aced an intelligence test. I have no doubt Sarah could pull off comedy and she does have the timing to do it. But I geenerally do not watch anything with a laugh track. They are as annoying as they are insulting.
