I've finished watching season 5 and now I'm on the third episode of season 6. The thread title says it all really. Have any of you noticed that she looks incredibly skinny?

I used to think that if she got any thinner she'd need medical attention.
She has said in interviews recently that she felt she went too thin and that because she felt she had issues and mild body dysmorphia that she goes off how her clothes fit now and not the scales. I think it's hard to fight what society constantly says you should be, especially when you are someone constantly photographed and gossiped about like Sarah was then and still is.

Much Music on Canadian cable TV plays an endless loop of Buffy and I have been through about three cycles of it so far (plus I have the DVD's for both Buffy and Angel). If you compare the scrawny Buffy in "Chosen" with the fuller-figured Buffy with the chipmunk cheeks of "Welcome to the Hellmouth", the difference is striking. Buffy in the first season has a noticeably larger waistline than Willow but by the end of the series, it seems to be the same. Her face goes from wide to narrow.

Other than Johnathan, she is the shortest character in the series and this doesn't help. The narrowing waistline may make her look taller in later seasons, but that is an illusion.

Well, Sarah did say that after shooting I Know What You Did Last Summer she lost a lot of weight because she gave up eating fried foods and such. But then later she did get very thin.

I always thought it was because she was doing a lot of movies and things and overworking herself during that time.

Honestly, it's hard enough being a woman in todays society! I cannot even begin to imagine the pressure a celebrity feels. Constantly photographed! People always talking about how you look! If she went too far down the thin lane I can't really blame her. I blame society.

For someone as small as Sarah is,the loss of just a few pounds is very noticeable. For whatever the actual reason for her weight loss, however,I thought that it worked in quite well with the character, considering the grueling schedule Buffy would have been maintaining for, at that time, with only a few months off (mostly when she was dead) for rest in all that time. The combination of working all day, paroling all night, and almost certainly poor nutrition, would take a terrible oll on anyone, even he Slayer.

Anyhow, a thinner Sarah resulted in a thinner Buffy, which I thought was quite appropriate.

Agreed. I'm the same height as Sarah and roughly the same weight, whenever you get sick or just run down, the difference in weight is very noticeable.

Her schedule would have been grueling and her metabolism would have been all over the place due to irregular meal times/sleeping patterns. Combine that with the heavy focus in Hollywood (and 'real-life') for women to look a certain way and I can see how she succumbed to that.
She looked great either way.

I never fully noticed a weight difference, to be honest. But then I also kind of chalked it up to the idea of "growing up". She was younger then and she matured over the course of the series, physically, from girl to woman (even if her real age didn't match the age of her character). So that's how I always figured it.

I never thought she was too thin, though. She always seemed just right.

I always thought SMG looked her best in Season 5, toned and slender but not skinny. 🙂 (plus great hair...)

I hate the way hollywood (and lots of gossip/fashion mags) constantly force women to be thin. it's stupid and unhealthy and I sure hope it changes soon. 😡

It would be interesting to read the contract SMG had to see what references to weight it had. Charisma Carpenter said in one of the Angel commentaries that she had to ask Joss for permission to cut her hair - there is probably a huge set of terms and conditions of the contract regarding maintaining a constant physical appearance. I know some contracts also have clauses about not undertaking dangerous activities due to the disruption that would occur from an injury. Stories had to be rewritten around David Boreanaz's knee surgery that left him behind a desk due to reduced mobility for a number of weeks on Angel.

A TV series set in a country where 30% of the population is obese and 1.5% are morbidly obese, may signify that Hollywood is pushing things in the right direction. Still, Buffy looked better in Season 1 than in Season 7.

I figured it had to do with SMG's movie career. During that time stick-thin was big in showbiz. I remember critics calling it the lollipop head look and heroin chic. She probably had to look like that in order to get movie roles. Her weight loss is most apparent during action sequences because her stunt doubles had more muscular, athletic bodies.

Yeah, but who wants to see a pot bellied vampire?

As I said before, whether by intent or by accident, a thinner Buffy in Season 7 would make sense, considering the life style that she would have to live as the Slayer. No sitting at home at night watching TV and eating popcorn, probably, in fact, more meals missed than eaten.

Different character and different universe, but Kelly Armstrong's werewolves in "Bitten," and its two sequels have to eat huge amounts of food just to support their body metabolism. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch of the imagination to say that the same would apply to Whedon's Slayers. That energy has to be fueled somehow, and it would fit in pretty well with Faith's statement that Slaying always made her "Hungry and horny."

Sarah's most noticeable weight loss was in Season 7, which would fit in with Buffy's having to feed a houseful of Potentials. By the time that Buffy got home from patrolling, most of the food would be gone, so, no supper for the Slayer.

It could have been by intent, and it just never got mentioned in the story line, or just by coincidence that Sarah lost the weight, and maybe no one agrees with me (I know at least one here who probably won't) but it fits in quite well with how I think that it would have actually been.

Being that thin, is sometimes really not healthy.

No one should be pressured by society to fit inside a certain castrating strait-jacket, and when it invariable will try to make you conform to the rules of the mad house. As long as you feel good in your own skin and can go a few rounds, no matter what weight, you're doing great and don't believe a word of it!

I used to be really thin, and being moderately tall, when you're like that, you feel like a sail on a ship, a strong wind could blow you away.

It's also really a pain in Aikido competitions, as you're lumped in with people your weight, and often times that can be small stocky people, and I don't care what they say, that gives taller people, who have longer arms, the range and therefore an unfair advantage. Now however I'm much healthier.
