Take this with a LARGE grain of salt, but there's an article at Sci Fi Wire that says Sarah is "willing" to make a new Buffy movie with "the right script." Didn't she say about the same thing in 2003?

Well, then again, the last movie ad I saw for her was one where she ends up falling for Alec Baldwin. It had a cute name, but I think it's about pedophiles. Perhaps she thinks Buffy was safer because she got to make out with dreamy guys who WEREN'T old enough to be her father!

(Try GRANDFATHER,)

The bad thing about this article is that there
s one right below it that says she doesn't think a Buffy movie would work, and they both use the same quotes.

I think she said she's iffy about it because the first movie was so bad and she spent seven years saying 'no! it's nothing like the movie, I swear!' and she doesn't want it to happen again, the being bad I mean. Plus because Buffy was such a success she doesn't want the show to be accused of jumping the shark, which was why she wasn't very on board with the concept of 'Buffy: Animated'.
But she also said that Joss has an ability to make things work and if he sent her a movie script and she thought it was really good and workable and could translate onto the big screen successfully she'd do it. After all, she added 'never say never'.

May as well post the article for a look-see, eh?

Gellar: Buffy Film Wouldn't Work

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who gained fame as TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told SCI FI Wire that she doesn't think a big-screen version would work.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, from creator Joss Whedon, was itself a reboot of the flop 1992 movie of the same name that starred Kristy Swanson. "We had a lot to overcome on a TV show," Gellar said in an interview. "Everyone's like, 'Why would you do that?' So then to go back [to a movie] feels kind of hard."

Still, Gellar would not rule out returning to her most iconic role: "Never say never," she said.

"One of the reasons [the original Buffy movie] didn't really work on the big screen--and people blamed Kristy, but that's not what it was--is the story was better told over a long arc," Gellar said. "And I worry about Buffy as a 'beginning, middle and end' so quickly. ... You show me a script; you show me that it works, and you show me that [the] audience can accept that, [and] I'd probably be there. Those are what my hesitations are."

Gellar said she's still recognized internationally for the show, which aired on The WB and UPN from 1997 to 2003. "I was in Bali, and I kid you not, my cab driver called me Buffy," she said. "And, actually, I know it's on in South Africa." --Mike Szymanski

And yeah, she said pretty much the same thing when she was promoting the film The Grudge.

I really think Joss should make a Buffy movie of Buffy's life pre Sunnydale that will be canon and would not suck. I would prefer that over one with the same actors that takes place after the series. We already have the comics anyway.

Now that we have season 8 and AtF, I really doubt there'd be room for a movie that wouldn't interfere with the comics in some way.

Then again, what if it took place during that blank period of time between leaving Sunnydale and showing up in season 8 as like Watcher's Council, 2.0? I'd watch a movie about how that transition occurred. I am skeptical, though. I agree that Buffy does better in long arcs. To be honest, I think Joss does better in long arcs. Part of what makes Joss' work so great is how deeply he is able to delve into the characterization and setting. He builds believable worlds and peoples them with believable folks. That's really hard to do in 2 hours. 🙂

Exactly, long arcs work better in Buffy. But like...VisionGuy said, they could do a pre-Sunnydale thing. Which admittedly, they already did in the comic books with the Buffy: Year One stuff.
But that would be a premise that would allow there to be no arc. It would just show us how Buffy and Joyce (Potentially Dawn) arrived in Sunnydale, perhaps including the divorce and Buffy's upset and guilt over this whilst intercutting to what our scoobies lives were like in Sunnydale *before* they were the Scoobies. Albeit, it's limited but hey, one can dream.

The thing is, I don't believe it would have the same appeal if it wasn't the original cast and we have to admit that the scoobies are starting to look more like they could play the adults than the teenagers. I mean the adult characters not so much, because age isn't as definitive at that point, but I doubt SMG could play a sixteen year old anymore.....

Didnt SMG say that if she played buffy now she would have to beat the vamps off with a walking stick?!Too old for a pre season 1
WA and I have been chatting about this and to be honest I'm torn on the whole thing. I don't entirely buy the whole 'Buffy didn't work as a movie therefore it never could'. The first incarnation of Buffy was an utter disaster I think we all agree on that BUT and to me this is a BIG BUT the people who were involved in the show had very little (Joss) or nothing at all to do with it. A great part of the reason it sucked is because Joss was pretty much phased out of the production, the actors were mediocre at best, Yes even Sutherland!. We have seen how well the show worked an to be honest I think Buffy had the best writers and ensemble cast of any show. I think its disrespectful to them to say that a movie wouldn't work. I think it would, ok so maybe it would have to be a LOTR type trilogy but I have no doubt that Buffy would transcribe wonderfully onto the big screen.

However, since the comics have emerged this year I have to wonder do we need a movie? and like so many people have said if it doesn't include the entire original cast it's just not Buffy.
Most people are hung up on Gellar but I'm not sure if the other cast members would be willing to do it. For some reason I can't see DB being too enthusiastic? and well would Joss even be interested? he has the comics? He knows how season 8 ends and 9 begins..where does the movie fit in?

Hey, I used to have a crush on Swanson!!!

I agree with your comments on the movie. The acting was mediocre especially when compared to, as you said, the brilliant ensemble cast in the series. Even one episode guest stars had acting ability

You're just too wise!
James Marsters said that he would give it five years after the end of Angel where he would be willing to reprise the roel of Spike...after that he said he'd be to old. Angel ended in 2204, right? this is 2008, people.

Don't throw tomatoes at me... but would Spike be absolutely necessary? I mean, to me, it seems like the core 4 would be absolutely necessary, but everyone else would be icing on the cake. Spike's cool and all... but I don't think he's absolutely necessary. The season 8 comics are doing all right without him.

"Would Spike Be..." Bite yo' tongue, girl! Is mustard necessary with a hot dog? Is the cherry on top necessary for an ice cream sundae? Is cheese necessary for a cheese blintz? Ask yo'self and apologize!

Somehow I just knew you'd try to get Dave in there, darlin'.

Well...how could I leave him out? thats just plain crazy!
I also think the movie didn't do well because it seemed like it was supposed to be a serious issue, but turned out to be fluffy. I mean, so many things could have been changed to make it what the show is today. Even simple changed, like real vamp dustings and bumpy foreheads. Simple, yet a huge difference. Maybe back then it wasn't the vision but it is today, so I think with the right writing, it really could work. Could, could, could work, lol.

This sounds like good news. If it ever happened it would bring Buff back to 'watching' instead of reading. And boy do I love to watch! Of course she's willing to do something with 'Buffy' it's her widest known and appreciated show/character.

As was pointed out by Nerd4hire, I either read the article wrong or dreamed the whole thing (a shrimp and peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat sometimes affects me that way...)

Im a 'watcher' too, Im too slack to read!
I'd be scared of a movie. There is a HUGE section of people who either didn't see the first movie or saw it and thought it was stupid that have never thought twice about the show. (Me..two or so years ago...my Dad who just showed the whole family the movie the other night THINKING he was being extra cool Dad.) I'd hate for it to come across as a "remake".
You can see in the movie (now) where TINY pieces of Joss come through, but it was so sad.
Also (ducking) where I am happy they made Serenity, because I needed it. It really didn't hold a candle to what I imagine Firefly would have been if given another season.

I'd MUCH prefer for this Ripper movie to turn into a series or for there to be a spin off of any sort. I'm just not sure we even NEED a Buffy movie. I could maybe like an Angel one, even to get us from S5 to S6 comics.

I still don't worry about James. He's still okay to play Spike. And like I've said before...low light, less taking off his shirt, and maybe even some "scars" from battle to cover OBVIOUS ageing and he could play Spike until he's 70! He might not like it because he's couldn't play the Spike he remembers, but I don't care.

If james masters gets to do those up close and pesonal scenes with SMG Im sure he'd jump at the chance!Might have to pay him to keep his shirt on!
As Miss K so predictably points out, it just wouldn't be the same unless the entire cast returns. The arranging of all of those schedules in and of itself brings terms like "monumental" to mind.

predictably? I'm predictable now...ok Bangel aside!

And that's the problem. People who saw the movie wont give Buffy the show a chance. And they are really missing out. Ahhh, if only!

Giving the average person their due, few people would see a movie or tv series with a title like "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" as being anything more than a comedy with a rather premise, something like "The Munsters," or "The Addams Family." That's probably one of the reasons that the movie didn't do any better than it did. It was too serious for its title and too light hearted for its genre (few "comedy horror" productions are great successes). The audience just didn't know what to make of it, and and the actors, all talented professionals, seemed not to really know what to do with the characters they were portraying. With a script by Whedon and performances by the likes of Sutherland and Haur, this could have really been a great movie.

(And Miss K, you are predictable on only one subject. In everything else, you never fail to amaze me.)

Well, that and it kind of stunk.

Yes. t did, but my point is, it SHOULDN'T have stunk. With the actors and the writing that the movie had, it should have been a lot better. My only guess as to why it didn't is that the director just didn't know what to do with the material and talent at hand.
