Sarah On The Big Screen

I think that we can all agree that Sarah was absolutely great as Buffy (otherwise we wouldn't be here). Everyone in the cast talks about how talented she is, how professional, how she is always prepared, always knows her lines, all of the things that make a good actor a great actor, plus she's absolutely beautiful.

So, what happened after the series ended? Her movie career has been completely underwhelming. Granted, recently there has been the pregnancy, but there were years before that with either nothing to show or, at best, mediocre successes. I hear that a bunch of people liked "Southland," but I don't think that it was much of a financial success.

So, why do yot think that Sarah's big screen career has been so unimpressive?
 
I don't know. Maybe she's more cut out for television acting? I hear she was good on Days of Our Lives.

It depends, really, on how you define success. Every actor has a different idea of it. She does get jobs, and gets paid reasonably well - maybe that's enough for her. Maybe she doesn't want to do big films and become insanely successful. She seems very professional as you said. Perhaps she is happy at the place she is at this point. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Sarah is a good actress, and there's a lot of competition. It's not as easy to get good, high-quality roles. I don't blame her for taking whatever she can get. She's got to make a living. Also, no offense to her husband, but what has be done lately? She's probably playing his part of the mortgage, lol.

Sarah was never in Days of Our Lives, she was in All My Children.
I don't understand.
So many seems to think that her movie career is a complete failure, or a least not as successful as it should/could have been.

I've seen most of her movies and I think they are basically good movies, she played against many big names etc.
Some are better than others of course, but overall I think her career has been good, as expected actually.

I feel that many has very high expectations, it can't be easy to get a great role in a big budget movie.
It doesn't matter how great actor you are, there are almost an unlimited number of great actors out there after all.
Many of them are also bigger names than SMG. So I think it could be much worse.

I've always looked at Sarah's career being successful but in a different light. She has a huge fan base and seems to take movie roles that appeal to her and that have a good storyline behind it. I don't think shes bothered if the film becomes a box office smash. She obviously likes diversity, and I've never seen her as the type of person to come across as in it for the money. Sarah loves acting, regardless if the film is a hit or not. I think shes had some lucky breaks before and after Buffy but I don't think shes bothered if it happens again.

As for Freddie, well he's had some good roles and hey he's going to be in 24, so his luck could soon be turning round again, or maybe like Sarah he's not bothered if he's the next big thing when it comes to being an actor.

I really don't know. I know she's a good actress, we all saw that in Buffy, and I really don't know why her movies don't succeed. After Buffy she made Scooby Doo 2, for me it was ok, funny. The Grudge was amazing, her acting was awesome, and it did well, very well. I never liked Southland Tales, maybe because I don't like that kind of movies. The Return was, well I've watched it, but it's not awesome, I've watched it only because she's in it. The Air I Breathe was intersting, I really don't know why it didn't had any succees. Suburban Girl was ok, but we have a whole bunch of movies like that, so it wasn't anything special. I've watched Veronika Decides To Die a month ago, and I think she's amazing there. That is my favourite book, and now it's a movie with Sarah, I think she acted very well there. Now I'm waiting for Possession. I don't know why her movied don't succeed, the last movie that was the blow out with here was The Grudge. But she belives in her roles, and she does her best. Half of that movies are better only because she's in them. She's amazing, loving, have a good heart, one person that is my role model since I was 7. To be honest I really don't care does she have a Oscar or Emmy, that really doesn't matter to me, I like watching her even if it's the most boring movie. And I think that's what makes a good actress. I'm going to be happy if I grow up to be a half of person she is.

Ah. Oops. I knew it was some sort of soap opera.

I actually really liked 'The Return.' I rented it because Sam Shepard was in it - he's my literary idol, I love his plays - and it turned out to be alright.

"The Return" is probably my favorite Sarah movie, too. Rather simple straight forward plot, but you gotta love a girl who carries a switchblade in her boot!

I think you're making good points here. She doesn't seem to embrace stardom as much as she thinks that acting is a job she loves to do. She may not wish to run head over heels after the top leading rà´les because getting those rà´les comes at quite a price. Besides, I suppose that there still are rather a few who equate her face with Buffy Summers. That won't make it easier to be cast as something completely different.
 
I don't really see her career as being 'successful'.
I'll watch anything with her in it, only because i loved her as 'Buffy', but it don't mean that i like/enjoyed the films she was in.

I certainly don't think that she's a crap actress or anything, duh.
It's just the crappy story lines in the films she's in.
Except from Cruel Intentions. and she's brill as Daphne)++

The return, Suburban girl and the Grudge were terrible.
Although i do love watching sarah! As pervy as that sounds, i do 🙂
 
Well, The Grudge and Scooby-Doo movies were both financially successfully, as well as both having a pretty large fanbase.

She's also worked alongside some pretty big-name actors, namely Andy Garcia, Brendan Fraser, Kevin Bacon, etc.

She's definitely the most successful on a general level of all the Buffyverse actors.
 
Many actors who have played an iconic role in a much-loved TV show find it difficult to shake that particular persona off.

It can dog them for rest of their careers as the general public find themselves unwilling to let go or expect the actor in question to express their ability beyond an accepted range of character traits (yes, I'm looking at YOU entire cast of Friends™!)

I feel should mention Sarah's most recent work though, Veronika Decides to Die. I highly recommend it if anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Apparently, its based on a book of the same name (which I haven't read). The story revolves around a troubled woman, Veronika, who attempts to commit suicide. After the failed attempt, she awakens in a mental hospital where she is diagnosed with a fatal heart condition and has only days left to left. This sets her on a journey of self-discovery where she comes to terms with her own mortality, learns to love again and begins to appreciate the gift of life.

I don't want to spoil the twist ending, but this is a really beautiful, touching, life-affirming film. And Sarah's performance is simply fantastic.

I cried. In a manly way of course.
 
Thaaaaaaaaaat's showbiz honey!
She owned the role of Buffy--as Joss said, she knew the character better than he or any of the writers, and the series would not have been the same with anyone else. I wish her success and happiness. But she really hasn't done anything that got a "wow" out of me since BTVS.

To add another to your list, just look how long it took for Sean Connery to escape the James Bond typecasting. He'll always be remembered as the first 007, certainly, but now, finally, he's also remembered as Henry Jones, Sr, father of a son named after his dog. (I wonder if they stole that gimmick from John Wayne, who got the name "Duke" because that was his dog's name)

I think there are two reasons:
1.) When you're known for portraying an iconic character, people are reluctant to cast you as someone else.

2.) As Georges Jeanty said, Joss has a penchant for casting women with a natural beauty, like Sarah, Alyson, Amber, Amy, Jewel, and Michelle.

9 times out of 10, Hollywood will sooner go for the bimbo-y types like Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, etc.

True, plus the fact that, as unfair as it might seem, Hollywood doesn't seem particularly eager to cast women in a certain age group, usually around Sarah's current age, unless they are known box office attractions, like Jessica Alba, and since Sarah's biggest success, Buffy, was on TV, not in the movies, there just aren't that many roles available. There are the young bimbos, and the mature Sigourney Weavers, and not much in the way of decent roles in between.
