I'm liking John McCain's pick for Vice Presidential candidate. I almost wish I was American, so I could vote Republican.

Who Sarah Palin is

Come to think of it... Anybody, have any opinions on this coming American election yet?

I like the fact that Palin sold the Alaska governor's jet on ebay 🙂 ...that she's apparently a budget slasher/reformer. 80% approval rating, that's nuts.

I'd say the campaign's been a lot more interesting and bizarre than I would've predicted. I was thinking it was gonna be an unsurprising Hillary vs Rudy race.

Seems like McCain's got more of a shot now than he did a week ago (assuming he can convince enough people that choosing Palin wasn't total cynical/political calculation). I don't really know how many disgruntled Hillary fans they're actually gonna snag.

Actually it won't just be Hillary fans...

Who will support Sarah

but how many Hilary fans will switch? It looks like there might be a few...

Will Hilary fans support Palin?

Well, my first reaction was "who?" Then, my husband said she was a relatively unknown governor from Alaska, and I immediately had doubts about inexperience. I find myself torn between the two candidates on issues as well as on experience. Although I lean slightly more to the left in terms of most issues, I sincerely question Obama's ability to do the job given his lack of experience. He seems to be relying too heavily on an everyman image. That's what Bush, an inexperienced governor from Texas, did. I'm no fan of Bush. The party and the American people also seem to be placing a lot more emphasis on barrier breaking than on qualifications. So for McCain to go and choose a relatively inexperienced barrier breaker as his running mate leaves me in a quandary.

I feel like this election is becoming more and more about social/minority issues than about the war or the economy. Honestly, I feel like neither side really knows what to do, so they're trying to use race and sex to distract us from the very big questions that face our country. It all rather rings of bread and circuses, don't you think?

Bill Clinton was a relatively unknown governor from Arkansas before he was elected, TWICE. I'm no fan of the Clintons, but if he can do it, so can she.
I think McCain choosing a woman running mate was done solely to try to lure those bitter voters still upset that Hilary didn't get the bid. Had Obama chosen Hilary as his running mate or had Hilary been in Obama's place right now McCain NEVER would have chosen a woman. It was a purely stratagic move on his part and any smart Democrat out there will not fall for his bullshit, they'll suport Obama and see McCain for what he really is, Bush part 2.

i completely agree with you. palin is a scary right-wing extremist with no experience. she was picked solely for strategic purposes.

Have you heard about this P.U.M.A (party unity my ass) movement? It's made up of Hilary supporters who were so P.O.ed at Hilary not getting the nomination they were going to A) not vote, or B) write in Hilary's name on the ballot. Now they have a third choice.

Here's why I like Sarah.

She's the first candidate with a sane energy policy.

She's proved she can't be intimidated by big business, or single issue fanatics like polar bear nuts.

She's fought corruption, and been successful.

She fought pork barrel insanity like the bridge to nowhere, and won.

She's smart and tough. I've seen her answering hard ball questions, and she can hold her own.

She's been a Governor 2 years, and still has an 80% approval rating.

Integrity. She doesn't just talk the talk. She walks the walk.

A McCain/Palin ticket has good chemistry.

The critiques against her don't bother me personally.

Even at 44 she's still nice to look at.

That last argument is what convinced me.
She's making me feel a bit better about having to vote for McCain (because Obama is a HUGE NO). I would much rather have had Ron Paul as a choice, but having Palin in with McCain is . . . not almost as good, but better than, say, McCain and Guilliani.

I'd vote for Ron paul pretty quick, he could have a talking sock puppet for his running mate and I'd still x the box.

Well thats all well and good but the reality if the matter is that we vote for president not vice-president.

I could not agree with nerd4hire more, especially with mcacins health being an issue in the past.
Here's one I don't know off the top of my head. Exactly how close was the last election? If we had a repeat of that, exactly how many votes would the Sarah Palin thing have to sway in the right riding(s) to elect her the next potential president of the United States?

Oh,yeah?

How about the fact that she shot Wasalla's revenue base to hell and back when she was mayor, forcing them to(HORRORS!)raise taxes four-fold to compensate for the frak up? And let's not forget THEIR version of Troopergate...where she(ALLEGEDLY)intervened and got a high-up in the state police fired.(Come on,guys....you got bent when Clinton did it. Where's the outrage,I ask you?)

And as for that approval rating: It's tailed off quite a bit since then.

As far as the "Bridge to Nowhere"....apparently,she was for it before she was against it.

This is,as far as I can see,a pick that smacks of complete desperation. The Repubs got whipsawed by Obama's choice and had to ask themselves "How can we best respond?" The answer, apparently,is having just 2 interviews with your selection. That's right. TWO.

Popular vote? Close. Electoral? Not even close.

And don't worry,at least not right now, about it being close. About every electoral site and poll I've noticed all say the same thing: It's not going to happen for the Repubs this year.

One more thing: We're electing McCain, not Palin. She(like virtually every other VP)gets to wait around until the Pres kicks.

I don't get the whipsawed comment. Sure it was a suprise but from what I've heard, Bidden was a very poor choice, especially when your running on a fresh face/trust platform. The dude got dumped in the 80's run because he plagerised stuff.
You forgot to mention the one about her being a creationist.

Yeah I know...the left wing blogs went crazy today. I saw that.
'Sarah Palin's this, and Sarah Palin did that". And tomorrow the right wing blogs will be going crazy with, "no she's not, and no she didn't and polls are only considered accurate to liberals when they say they're winning".

I already heard from the other side about the one you're calling troopergate. The allegation is Palin had some guy fired, because he wouldn't fire the ex-husband of her sister. Sarah of course denies it, and looks forward to an investigation so she can reveal it as unfounded. Apparently though one of her advisors is supposed to be on video, or something (expect it on youtube if that's true), telling somebody how Sarah disapproves of the ex-brother-in-law. Her husband is supposed to have said something similar to somebody.

Here's the Washington Post with the inside poop. Basically you've got a disgruntled employee angry at being fired, and making some allegations. It's no kind of "gate". As far as scandals go, this one couldn't bring down the guy who brings coffee to the kid who brings the mail. But yeah Obama's internet legions will call it troopergate, and try to make something of it. No doubt about that. It's about as credible as that one on youtube from the guy who claims he smoked crack and had a homosexual experience with Obama in the back of his limo, if you ask me. Maybe if you're going to accept the one you should accept the other.

I'd link you to this debate she had when she was running for leadership of the GOP in Alaska, so you could see her talking in person about some of the other stuff ckg alleges above, but the site is temporarily down. Too much sudden traffic, I guess. It's HERE though if you want to try it.

Until that time here's a great one.

Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama

Shows you how easy it is to cast aspersions, if nothing else. It can work both ways.

These built up, stretched out, or outright fabricated stories won't touch Sarah in the long run. They'll only serve to make the democrats look desperate.

Another shrewd maneuver by McCain if you ask me. He's playing the democrats like a fiddle. It may have looked good on paper for the young inexperienced BO before it began, but now the cagey old veteran will begin to fight the actual fight, and polls mean nothing at this point. I loved the way he totally stole the thunder from the Democrats who we're riding their high coming out of their convention in Denver. They were arrogantly feeling invincible. McCain announced Sarah Palin for VP the following day, and suddenly the media forgot any convention had even taken place. All the big talk in Denver was instantly forgotten. Now the day after that the Dems are scrabbling around through the dark recesses of the internet looking for some smudge they can muddy into a smear against the hockey mom of five with an 80% approval rating as Governor. Good luck with that. They tried it in Alaska when she ran for Governor. You saw how successful that was.

I won't be able to vote in your poll, because you left out any category that might apply to me. I will say this, however: I am a conservative, I was raised a conservative, for the remaining yeas of my life I see no reason to change that fact, and if Willow were to perform a resurrection spell in the following season, I will continue to be a conservative even after I claw my way back out of my grave. And, just so that there is no confusion in the matter, the key word there is CONSERVATIVE, not Republican. If I believed that Obama and Biden were the more conservative of the two teams, then I would vote for them. The "R" or "D" that follows the candidate's name on the ballot has little or nothing to do with who I would vote for.

And for the record, the race or gender of these four candidates has absolutely nothing to do with my choices, nor would sexual orientation, religeon, age, or any other such petty, inconsequential consideration, and I personally believe that anyone who would use anything as trivial as any one of those factors to determine who is elected to the most powerful and responsible job in the world both deluded and irresponsible.

And, in case there might be any doubt by this time, my vote in the upcoming election, will be for Mr. McCain and Ms Piden.

This poll is kind of skewed and not really even which is kind of unfair.

However, I'm not an American so my opinion doesn't count no matter what, when concerned with the upcoming election.
I know who I'd like to see, but I don't know squat about their internal politics, I just see their international stuff. =)

nerd: Sorry, but I think it's McCain's who's the desperate one here. Nice to see the Republicans joined the 20th century. Except it's the 21st. The reason the YouTube boob isn't credible is....dude's got a criminal record. But that's not stopping the trash right from pumping up his claims, now is it?

And,as far as I'm concerned,he made the wrong choice. If he wanted to pick a female candidate,he could do worse than go with Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Granted, she's conservative, but she also has some brains. You can't really say that about Palin,who-when asked if she wanted to be McCain's Number 2-was said to have asked what a vice-president does. Did she skip civics or U.S. government classes in high school?

Back to the selection of Palin: If McCain thinks that selecting her will magically send disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters to his ticket, then he's sorely mistaken. By and large,Clinton's backers are liberal, overwhelmingly pro-choice,for affordable medical care and enviromentally aware. And he thinks that they'll chuck it all away and back him just because Palin's a female? In the words of Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen,"Psshh! Please." That's comparable to saying that white males who'd never vote for Barack Obama because he's a liberal will now suddenly swing over to the Obama ticket because Joe Biden is white.

sarah palin was chosen because mccain hoped to snag the hilary fans and shore up his extreme right-wing side. palin has little experience as well as being an extremist who is anti-abortion and pro-creationism. i would have considered mccain before, because as far as republicans go, he's pretty good. but now that he's chosen palin, i would never dream of voting for him. the united states needs some progressive leadership, not a repeat of the complete and utter disaster that has been george w bush and not policies that are close-minded and blindingly ignorant.

at the beginning i was a little torn because i liked mccain and i liked obama. I didnt like obama's inexperience but he seemed to have a drive to see things change because in my opinion we sorely need change. Mccain struck me as someone who was also willing to do something different even tho he is a republican and he had the experience to make it work. But over the course of the election i saw a shift in mccain that i didnt see in obama and may that shows to obama's inexperience as a politician that he held almost a childlike determination to see his dreams come to fruition while mccain continually jumped on whatever republican bandwagon that seemed to be going in his favor. One moment he's a maverick the next he's a conservative and the next he's a bush clone (the latter being the one that finally broke the camels back). I am a democrat always have been but mccain almost had me until he looked too much like that other guy. while obama on the other hand said and believes in the same things i do and just listen to the man speak how could you not get goose bumps from his speeches its like listening to marcus garvey, mlk, fdr, and jfk all in one. plus i think with his choice of vp he is offsetting his inexperience by surrounding himself with experienced ppl like biden and you know billarey won't be do far in the shadows. I like Palin but i think mccain undercut his entire obama argument because he was scared of obama's DNC speech. which once again goes to my point that he doesn't know what he wants to do. OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Remember when I was talking about the flip-flopping on the Bridge to Nowhere?

Well,now,here's the proof.

The full article is below, but here's the pertinent part: "The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a 'build-the-bridge' platform, telling Ketchican residents she felt their pain when politicans called them 'nowhere'".

Palin touts stance on 'Bridge to Nowhere,' doesn't note flip-flop: Gov. Sarah Palin | adn.com

And,it also seems the evangelical community is in a tizzy(but a GOOD tizzy, mind you)over Palin's selection. See here...

http://www.cbn.com/CBNNews/435912.aspx

One more thing: To follow up on hazzard's comments...Palin tried to give some props to Hillary at a campaign event near Pittsburgh, but all she got was a hearty round of boos. Yeah. REEEEALLLLY trying to get the Clinton supporters under the tent.

So if you vote somebody into office and they balls it right up, only you have a right to complain? See, I see it if you vote somebody in, and they balls it up, you've got no right to complain. You're the donkey that gave them the power.
Politics in America is such a load of crap. Everywhere actually. If you were to insert some truth into it the whole political structure would fall apart.

McCain picked Palin because he thought it would get him more votes, not because he thought she would be the best vice-president. I don't understand how anyone could applaud something so cynical and transparent.

It is not naive to want the best persons possible to run your country. It is naive to think you're going to get that.

I dont think all politicians are lying, money grabbing, tossers. Some people really, really do want to help others, while keeping true to their principles(lol). Unfortunately for the rest of us, those type of people never make it. Those fair few usually resign pretty early in their political career. (when they become fully aware how corrupt the whole system is)

The rest of them? They're all in it for themselves.

I don't vote, I probably never will. I refuse to, in any way, condone, endorse, such repugnant bullshit. And if I could convince just one other person to not vote I would be happy.
