Sarah's lack of gratitude

Well, wasn't it what happened? Joss is the creator of the show which gives him the control over the characters. He did create "Spike raped Buffy" storyline and he also created Spike "became hero year after raping Buffy" storyline.
Sorry but to me that makes about as much sense as saying that "Buffy tried to kill her friends in Normal Again, therefor it's wrong to make her a hero."
Or making Angel a hero? Geeze he killed lots of people, wouldn't surprise me if he rapes some too. And what about Willow? She tried to end the world.. Su re you might consider rape to be worse than all those things, but it still works the same way...

And even if it would've been the message Joss wanted to give with BtVS, I don't think that would in any way make it ok for SMG to be a bitca (again, I don't think she is/was, just saying)..

Just one thing. The reactions to my post all show that I am right. I told that people do believe that Spike had his reasons and Buffy asked for it. I said people support Spike no matter what. "It's her choice, isn't it" reaction to Buffy's forgiving of Spike. No, it isn't. This is where SMG had debated with Whedon and made her mind no never attend any Buffy meetings, thus, it is Whedon's call that Buffy forgives Spike, it is his show, it is his call. But don't make any assumptions that I buy that he can be forgiven. Because as rape being a heated topic in law now, whether it exists or not, or if a raped woman is virtuous enough or not, Joss decided that a rapist can be forgiven and a raped woman deserves it. He took that side. You can take that side, too. But, I'm not and if I say "sorry, my mistake", know that I'm being sarcastic.

First of all, I have a question. Can someone please tell me where all this quoteage is coming from that SMG said about the choices made in the show regarding rape, heroes and what not? I have never heard about this until the past couple of posts. I want the source, because I'm confused. I'm a very avid SMG fan and follower, have read just about everything the has said, and I have never come across this. I just want to know how I missed it.

And, back on the original topic of Sarah's gratitude towards the show... she is an amazing actress. And really the only one who is ever jumped all over for doing other projects. Please tell me any recent David Boreanaz comments/appearances that deal with Angel. Oh wait, he's busy with a new show .

This is where SMG had debated with Whedon and made her mind no never attend any Buffy meetings, .

I agree with Spiked Buffy. Link please. I don't believe this exists the way described.

I do remember SMG making a comment suggesting she didn't like the balcony scene with Spike in Season 6, as she thought it went against character.

BTW Marti Noxon was the show-runner of Season 6.

You'll have to link me to this debate between Joss and SMG, though. Honestly, I don't believe it exists.

I think as far as appearing on Angel in season five goes, Buffy did have her reasons. Her aunt died and then she had to go film for The Grudge...Good enough for me. She did offer to appear in the finale though because she could make that, however Joss declined the offer.

THE BLUE, I think you misunderstand me. I don't mean to say that Spike should be forgiven, which you would know by readin my posts on that in the "Spike's attempted rape"-thread, all I'm saying is that I don't think that this has got anything to do with SMG's gratitude.
Even if she disliked something Joss decided to do with the show (which I haven't either heard anything about), I don't think she has the right to be a bitca..... But again, I don't think she is.. Gah, this is turning into such a weird discussion, can we please have links to some real quotes?
'Cause all that I know is that SMG wanted to guest star on AtS season 5, but coudln't because of the filming of The Grudge...

Here's the one I remember seeing, but it's not an arguement between Sarah and Joss about the attempted rape scene. I still doubt that exists.

SARAH ON SEASON SIX

In an interview in March 2003, Entertainment Weekly asked Sarah Michelle Gellar: “You’ve mentioned how much you disliked the sixth season. Why was that? And how did you feel about Buffy’s depression, and her sexual obsession with Spike?” Her answer was:

“It wasn’t who Buffy was, or why people loved her. You don’t want to see that dark heroine; you don’t want to see her punishing herself. You want to see her killing vampires and making quips. It didn’t feel like the character that I loved.
Joss always explained that season as being about your 20s, where you’re not a kid anymore, but you don’t know what you want to do [with your life]. He always said that I didn’t understand last year because I’ve always known what I wanted to do, and I didn’t have that confusion, [that] dark, depressive period. But I think the heart of the show lies in the humor of the drama. I felt like Buffy’s spirit was missing last year.
“I had trouble with the one where Buffy had sex with Spike on the balcony [Dead Things]while watching their friends. I really thought was out of character. And I didn’t like what it stood for. That was the moment that I had the most problems with.”

^ Okay I see where she's coming from, I can sort of agree with her even though I love to see Buffy in pain and stuff (uh, I mean 'cause everyone experiences pain and so on).. I understand what she means but I don't think that's saying she had an arguement with Joss at all.. Of course they might have disagreed about things, that's not surprising.. they seem like very different people.. But I doubt this was something SMG hated Joss or she show for.

Thanks for that, Nerd4hire. I have read that, and agreed with her statements that it wasn't a typical Buffy move. So, now that's cleared up and we can see why she'd be upset.

Now, I still would like a link/quotes for Sarah stating that rapists were made heroes on the show and that's why she dislikes it now. Because I'm still not clear on that!

Sarah has a right to be angry, and anybody would be, but I agree with epo, that it wouldn't be something that she would hate the show for. I believe she understands her roots and appreciates her work on the show, and what an opporutnity it has give her, to continue with her career and move onto bigger things.

I have to agree with Sarah about that moment I totally hated it, it was one of my least favourite scenes of the whole 7 years, it was just so gross to watch, I thought. I was very not Buffy and I found it very uncomfortable to watch. But I do get why it was put in there, Buffy was suposed to be not acting like herself and being very out of character.
But it definetly does not sound like something she hates the show for, but is it possible that this is one of the first disagreements she had with Joss over her character?

Here I go in my defence of Sarah... fair enough she didnt comment on the DVD's etc etc... but does everyone remember the earlier seasons of the show.. Sarah was highly involved with everything to do with the show and at the same time she was what, in her early twenties.. SMG as an actor grew and although Buffy was certainly the platform that she had when she left I think that like with all actors she didnt want to be 100% type cast as being a Buffy for the rest of her life. Sarah herself has said so often about missing the character but I personally think that her own reasons for leaving the show at the end of the contracted 7 seasons was because of her own distance had to be there from the show... I think that although a lot of us fans and people that have worked with her can say she never showed enough gratitude, Sarah herself knows what Buffy did for her fanbase, her career and her success... she would be extremely grateful although maybe people perceive her not to be.

I am very much an SMG fan and so my opinion on this issue is subjective, but I don't think there is any question of her showing a lack of gratitude. I've never really understood this accusation, one that has been levelled at her many times. Exactly who is she showing a lack of gratitude towards?

We don't know what went on behind the scenes. We don't know anything about Gellar's relationship with her co-workers, etc. For myself, I don't really want to know. I'm sure that over the period of the seven seasons of the show there would have been arguments and disagreements and conflicts, and not just involving Gellar. After all, these are all just people like the rest of us.

Much has been made of the fact she didn't attend the wrap party. We all know the official reason. She flew out to Canada on the same day she finished filming on BtVS (which had over-run its production schedule) to join the film set of "˜Scooby Doo 2'. That seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable explanation and it's one that can be easily verified, unlike the silly rumours and speculation.

It would have been nice to hear a few audio commentaries but she didn't do them, so that's that. We don't actually know why she didn't do any but if we simply assume it was because she didn't want to, that is her own personal decision and I really don't see how she can be criticised for it. In any case, if Gellar had done commentaries something tells me there would have been complaints about what she did or didn't say in them. She just seems to be a very emotive subject for some reason.

Apart from all that, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, Emma Caulfield, etc, didn't provide any commentaries for the DVDs. Does that mean they showed a lack of gratitude?

Gellar doesn't do fan conventions. It's well known that she doesn't like crowds, as has been mentioned here. It's also been widely speculated that she just doesn't like conventions. Once again, that is her perfectly acceptable personal choice/opinion. Seth Green, Emma Caulfield and Charisma Carpenter have mentioned in the past that they are not particularly fond of conventions, although they have all done them. Gellar has done things of this nature herself from time to time, but it's obviously not something she wants to make a habit of.

She has been working continuously for virtually the whole of her life and I'm sure she has plenty of things to keep her occupied in her limited spare time. If attending conventions is not something she wants to do, so be it. Some actors get something out of that kind of interaction with fans. Others don't. Let's face it, if someone like James Marsters (a regular and very popular convention attraction) had several films in various stages of production (in other words, a packed work schedule) he would be far less likely to attend these conventions. We do need to be realistic about it.

For reasons I never understood, Gellar got heavily criticised by a lot of BtVS fans for (apparently) not inviting the people she worked with to her wedding. What on earth is all that about? Why exactly should she have invited them? I get on very well with the people I work with but I didn't invite any of them to my wedding and they did not expect to be invited. Gellar's private life is her business and the people she chooses to be her close personal friends is not something that should be the subject of public debate/criticism.

When asked, Gellar always says how much she owes to BtVS, although clearly (and understandably) she wants to move on now and get on with her career. In my experience, she has never publicly had a bad thing to say about any of the people she worked with. Contrary to some of the more ludicrous Internet gossip, many of those she worked with have had nothing but nice things to say about her and she does still maintain contact with some members of the cast and crew (Michelle Trachtenberg and Seth Green being the obvious examples). She is clearly a very ambitious and determind person - and her life and career exists outside of (and beyond) BtVS.

Gellar worked extremely hard on BtVS. Nobody can deny that. She helped to make Buffy an iconic figure. I think it's reasonable to suppose the show would not have survived as long as it did without her involvement and I'm happy to celebrate that fact, just as I'm grateful to all the actors, writers and crew who helped to make it the greatest TV show I've ever seen.

This probably goes without saying, given my previous comments in this thread, but i agree absolutely!
