Sarah Michelle Gellar, most recently seen on the big screen in "Scooby-Doo," will take on a more frightening role in her next starring gig as she is set to topline the horror remake "The Grudge."

The project, being produced by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and distributed domestically by Columbia Pictures, is an English-language version of the Japanese thriller "Ju-On."

The film's title refers to a curse that befalls someone who dies in the grip of a powerful rage. Those who encounter this murderous supernatural curse die, and a new one is born -- passed like a virus from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror.

The project is being directed by the original's writer-director, Takashi Shimizu, from a script by Stephen Susco. Raimi is producing along with his Ghost House partner Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise, who produced the original film. Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane of Senator International will serve as executive producers alongside Roy Lee and Doug Davison, who originally gave GHP a look at the project.

Columbia co-president of production Matt Tolmach and director of production Shannon Gaulding are overseeing for the studio, with a January start date planned. The film will shoot in Tokyo at Toho Studios.

Gellar, best known for her starring role on the long-running television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," has appeared in such films as "Cruel Intentions" and "Scream 2." She next appears in the upcoming "Scooby-Doo" sequel and also is attached to star in "Romantic Comedy" for MGM.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will topline The Grudge, the English-language remake of the Japanese horror thriller Ju-On. Columbia Pictures has secured domestic distribution rights for the film, which is being produced by Ghost House Pictures, a genre division of Senator Intl. launched with Sam Raimi.

Shooting will begin at Tokyo's Toho Studios in late January. Takashi Shimizu, who wrote and directed the original film, will helm the remake.

The Grudge is about a murderous supernatural curse born of a grudge held by someone who dies angry. The curse passes like a virus to its victims.

Gellar recently wrapped Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed for Warner Bros. and is gearing up for Romantic Comedy, a spoof on the cliches of the romantic comedy genre at MGM.
 
wonder if it will go up against Ring 2 in the box office... similar movies well both from the same region and these remakes have been quite good... not seen Dark water yet but The Ring certainly impressed 😀
 
Ohhh Sarah and horror film. Sounds like a good combo to me. I know I'll be seeing it!

Sarah was visiting a sumo event in this photo. The picture is very unclear and perhaps not very spectacular, but we are trying to find out more about her stay in Japan. We'll keep you informed.

February 17: First news from the GRUDGE set

FANGORIA's Japanese correspondent Norman England has been spending a lot of time on the set of THE GRUDGE, Takashi Shimizu's English-language remake of his JU-ON films that's produced by returning Taka Ichise along with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. He just sent in an initial report that begins with a bit of casting news. "Ted Raimi is in this too," he reveals; the actor joins an ensemble that includes Sarah Michelle (BUFFY) Gellar, Jason Behr , Clea (CARNIVALE) DuVall, KaDee Strickland, Bill Pullman and the Japanese films' ghosts, Takako Fuji and Yuya Ozeki. "The thing about this film is that it's very ensemble," England adds. "Even though Sarah Michelle Gellar is the lead, she's not in it as much as you would think. But this is in keeping with JU-ON; all the films are like that.

"From what I've seen, there is a really good mixing of Japanese and Western staff," he continues. "There are a lot of bilingual people on the crew, Japanese who speak English as well as Americans who speak Japanese. I'd label it a "˜best of both worlds' production.

"The sets look really impressive, too; they rebuilt the haunted house inside Toho's new Studio 7. It's totally realistic. The crew is really busting their butts on this film and from the few shots I've seen, I have to say that it's looking good."

England has already interviewed busy genre producer Ichise for us, and reveals, "In April he's shooting the first of six new horror films. This one is being directed by Masayuki Ochiai, who did THE HYPNOTIST. I also talked with Hideo [RINGU] Nakata two weeks ago, and he said that he too is doing one for Ichise. I found out from Taka that unfortunately, Nakata's [planned U.S. feature debut] TRUE BELIEVER was canned."

"I'm here in Tokyo at the moment on an internship, and in yesterday's newspaper here The Daily Yomiuri , they had a bit on the english remake of "grudge" which sarah michelle gellar is shooting here, a few quotes from the folks involved and a listing of the cast below.

"I wanted to remake the film in Japan because I felt I would be comprimising myself too much to do it in Hollywood. Here, I have more control and I've availability to the cast and crew I want to work with - not people handed to me", says Director Takashi Shimizu, who helmed the original "Ju-On".

"We have Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jason Behr both fresh from very popular television shows and I think they'll great. This will be great role for both of them. It will be interesting to see Sarah in a different light I think, playing more of a victim than we have use to see her as the vampire slayer".

Shimizu says many of the same cast from the original are back and they have re-created many scenes.
