Humans are so amusing. After centuries of poisoning this planet in various ways, we now want to "save" it. And I'm sure that banning plastic straws and styrofoam cups is REALLY going to help, right? 😒

Newsflash: Its too late to do anything. So stop trying. The Earth doesn't care.

Anyway, why are we even bothering? The Earth is always trying to kill us, so we're pretty much screwed as it is. Think about it. If you've seen as many tornado videos as I have, you'll notice that those suckers have a terrible habit of chasing people. No kidding. I've seen tornadoes moving across a field or town, and when people point at it (or try to record it) that sucker suddenly turns and comes directly at them. They can move up to 60 miles per hour, so yeah...you're dead. This happens too many times times to be coincidence. (And the tornado really seems to enjoy the destruction)

As for sinkholes...c'mon now! Forget the scientific explanations. When the earth opens up under someone's house and shallows them, that's personal. What a way to die. 😨

And let us not forget earthquakes; Mother Nature's little postcard to humans, saying, "F**k off and die." There's no logical reason for the earth to shake...the planet just wants us to go away.

Forget trying to save the planet. It's a waste of time, and it doesn't like us anyway.

pessimism much? :D
When you see a tornado, don't be a dumbass. Chances are you can't outrun it. Get out of your vehicle and lie flat on the ground, covering your head. You'll have a better chance of surviving if you're NOT in a car. (The police officer in this photo is totally screwed, by the way)

You're sitting in your house, reading a book, when suddenly...GOODBYE!!

We in our technologically advanced civilizations can't understand how horrific nature is. There are good reasons why many in previous centuries left their farms and villages for the toxic and heavily polluted and crime-ridden cities...it was safer and less filthy, and entire villages and tribes could be wiped out by nature. That one guy in WWZ summed up nature perfectly as a "serial killer." (Doesn't mean nature isn't beautiful as well or that animals aren't capable of love and play, and I don't get why being one precludes the other, especially when plenty of mass murderers can be kind at other times, and serial killers can be hot going by the fans they get, and how they can use their looks to ensnare the unwary.)

Technology and control of the land has mitigated (for the moment) many of the dangers that people used to take for granted, whereas today people long for a simpler time not realizing how deadly and whimsical nature is and always has been. And even so, people can easily liquefy their brains or urinate their own blood because they drank or even swam in the wrong river due to the microbes (perhaps pollution could've killed those vile microbes), and just one of many things that can go wrong that never occurs to people.

It blows my mind how many people try to touch wild animals and get surprised when they're injured. Though come to think of it, that's actually many kids which parents encourage, and they probably know damn well the danger they're putting their kids in and just doing it for some sympathy and attention while faking naive innocence (and maybe even getting rid of the kid they secretly hate). I suppose Disney and the films of Miyazaki has given people the wrong idea of nature, though I find that hard to believe. To me that's as absurd as believing the Earth is a flat disc.

Many want the government to protect the environment. While I'm not necessarily against that, it should be noted that governments tend to be the biggest polluters over any corporation, primarily due to the creation and testing (and usage) of military weapons as well as the fossil fuels and other things to make it all happen. Though they're not the biggest polluter...that goes to Mother Earth, such as this:

Acidic oceans implicated in Earth's worst mass extinction

So the question remains: Why should I do anything for nature when this is what it is trying to do to me?

Btw, fans of The Last of Us might like this (or wish they never saw it) on how the game is pretty much based on what actually happens in nature (simply by adapting it so that it's humans that are affected, thus creating a type of zombie horror):

And that's humane compared to the way many insects die. Alien? That infamous xenomorph was based on a wasp, IIRC, that would inject larva into a bug that would slowly eat its way out (there are variations), sometimes paralyzing them and the larva careful to save the vital organs for last as they need the host alive to properly feed, and they eventually burst out of the host insect. One wasp even rams its stinger through like a roach's brain that destroys its dopamine and leads it about like a zombie slave, I believe to ultimately act as food for its larva (but in the footage I barely recall, the wasp at the roach's antenna for a quick snack before yanking it by the other antenna to drag it to the lair the wasp has ready).

Zombie roach!!! 😎
Scientists say that lightening is hotter than the sun's surface. But how do they KNOW that? I'm pretty sure they didn't travel to the sun and measure it's temperature. 😞

So...your central thesis is that we are ****ed anyway so why try? I suppose the counter to that is why not try? If we are ****ed anyway why not try? What do you have to lose if everyone is ****ed?

I just wonder if the film makers on Blue Planet 2 picked up the plastic that they filmed in the ocean and took it away with them, at least that way it's out of the water and the seas are a plastic item cleaner.

So the question remains: Why should I do anything for nature when this is what it is trying to do to me?

Nature finds a way. If someone is idiotic enough to stand in front of a tornado/Volcano/Tsunami filming it, that's natural selection at work.

The time, effort and energy for one.
The money for two.

The path of least resistance is always easier.

I am sorry, what I meant when I said what's to lose is, what is to lose that matters? If the end result is an uninhabitable planet for humans those things you mentioned don't matter. Nothing matters if the planet is uninhabitable for us. So why not try our best? Unless we can get to Mars, but that's another thing.

"If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do"

I was debating using that and "people who don't care about anything will never understand the people who do". But they wouldn't care.

But if I am not around when it becomes uninhabitable why do I care? If it's past the point of no return anyway, as was the point the above poster made, then anything else is just a masturbatory effort. So why bother?

But if I am not around when it becomes uninhabitable why do I care?

That's exactly how I feel. When people go on and on about saving the planet for future generations, I'm like, "Ha! I won't be here, so I don't care."

This is EXACTLY how I feel.

I don't believe in wasting my time.

Because reincarnation is real and you will come back to it.

Unless I come back as a cockroach then I'd be all happy cuz none of you humans would be around. Would suck if I came back as that cockroach that that guy made a special electric chair for and electrocuted him. But since people wont be around I think I'd be safe from that.

Well, the only reason to care is if you care about people. Specific young people you know and love that will have to deal with it or the idea of humanity as a whole. Assuming you yourself don't live through the uninhabitable stage. Usually it's easy to care if you have kids, nieces or nephews.

The scientific community seems to think the tipping point, temperature wise, is an increase of 2 degrees (though some point to as little as 0.4). The population tipping point is supposed to be 10 billion. If we are past the point of no return (as many scientists argue) the point of the effort would be to dampen the effect long enough to figure out how to colonise Mars. I mean in the overall sense, that is why people bother, not why you should.
