Scanner ?

Ok, I'm in the market to buy a decent scanner. I want a flatbed, photo scanner, because I'll be using it to develop graphics for desktop publishing and website purposes, but I'll also be using it for just plain documents, too. Plus, I'm sure my family will get some use out of it.....school reports and whatever. Anyway, does anyone have suggestions for models I should check out and what I should be looking for? I had a look at Amazon and saw an Epson 4990 I thought looked nice....but I don't know the first thing about scanners. :idunno: I don't want to spend more than $500 on it, from the little bit of looking around I've done, anything more expensive than that is WAY more than what I'll be needing anyway.

I've had a Cannon D646U for about 6 years now and I scan a lot of things from pics to newspaper articles. I never had a problem with it until I upgraded to Windows XP and I had to download the driver from their website. Once done I was back in business.
Cannon IMO makes a good product and the 'toys' that came with it satisfied what I needed.
If I had to get a new one I would most likely go with the combo pack, scanner/printer/fax etc.
My two cents for you to ponder.
 
Thanks, teentitan! What format is the output in, or can you choose from say, a .pdf or a .jpg, depending on your needs? Is it a color scanner?
 
It has it's own format but yes you can choose the format (I usually use JPEG for emailing). It scans in colour, grayscale, b&w, laser, magazine glossy etc.
The toolbox toys are great! You can layer multiple pics, borders, colours, phrases etc and merge together. For a non-professional user it's got everything I ever needed and more and I believe you can get a Canon for around $125 Cdn.
