The Haunting Original Black & White... watched at 2amish and the suspense contained in the movie is just, wooo and waaaay very edge of the seatish at times with thuds and bangs and they didn't have dolby 5.1 back then 😛
But a here and now movie? Jeepers Creepers when they're in the drain pipe... oh the rats... 🙁

I think the Exorcist had more of an impact back in the day when all these effects were new and when movies very rarely covered the act of exorcism and possession let alone by the devil... it was more shock value then anything...
I stood there when the movie was finally released on VHS in the UK and I took it home only to be unimpressed by it all 🙁 but its like Nightmare on elm st, kids today would laugh at it 😛

Final Denstation..I didnt think it was scary but it made me jump alot.
One not so scary movie has to be Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 there jus hilarous..and in SM2 when the girl cums downstairs and pees and it just on the floor and she just stands there and moves her toes...v.funny..

Amityville🙂 Are you talking about The Amityville Horror? That's actually the town right next to mine. I've thought about visiting that house tons of times, but when it comes down to it, I'd probably be too scared.

I don't really know, despite adoring the many b-grade horror about when i was getting through the hatred adolescence placed upon me (Romero's early stuff for example), i can't really pick out a film that scared me, "horror film" scared me. (sidenote, hasn't modern day horror films sunk to an all new low?) No for this, i'd have to recall a time when i was far more impressionable.
Fire in the Sky had the whole fascination i had down with aliens... the "needle shoved in eye" scene freaked me out no end. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (sorry budding film critics, but i'm talking about the remake 😉) was another, the demise of the human race is a strong fear of mine. Ok, stop... i'm 19, what you expected a plethora of cult classics. 😀
Mentally however, and recently finding myself stuck on anti-depressants, i'd vouch for Eraserhead if the mood is set (a là¡ quiet night in by yourself and volume cranked to pick out the eccentric silences). The detached, nothing makes much sense aspect works a treat on the more intrigued mind when you don't overlook it as just a "black and white" film. Also, Donnie Darko, quite like the aformetioned in terms of empowering the imagination, only well, colour and for some reason The Glass House.
It depends, i mean i recently saw K19: Widowmaker, a film about a Russian submarine and a melting nuclear reactor onboard. Now this isn't classed as your token scary movie, but the sight of your clothes glued to your skin due to the radiation on-board melting away flesh... well that scared me, scared me enough to quit smoking infact.
In relation to horror, there are many films i've seen with skin being liquified, burnt, whatever; this film however had realisation and that's where i find a film to truly be scary.
I'll just end off with one more film, Freddy vs Jason. Oh dear...

I was reading a book about the Amityville Horror house, the myth the legend that sort of thing, and the author said that it is all hype, that while it is built upon an old indian burial site that there are no noted supernatural thngs going on. There is a family that lives there and has apparantly lived there for many many years and have never experienced anything. The Lutz's (the family that the movie portrays) say that the house is possessed.
I remember a few neighborhood kids (much older then I at the time) said they knew people that stayed in the house as a prank and were scared out of their minds. and were unable to stay the night. I dont much believe in it, the movie was certainly entertaining and to be quite honest if I moved into the house and the walls started bleeding or it screamed for me to get out I would pack my things and leave immediatly! The house in Amityville and the Bermuda Triangle are about the same for me, would be nice to believe in but there is probably nothing significant going on.

You're lucky you didn't watch the original Japanese movie "RINGU", of which "THE RING" is a remake of. It would have been a much scarier experience, as the story is slightly different from it's American counterpart, and it had a much better ending.

Old Master, I thought that The Ring - though very scary - was not very conclusive logically. Is the original you mentioned better in that respect?

The Entity was boring, not quite as boring as The Exorcist though.
There are no real scary films anymore. Stuff like Ring (the Japanese ones, the remake just spent too much time explaining things for dense mainstream audiences) and The Blair Witch Project are about as close as we're gonna get these days. Until someone invents Interactive Virtual Reality horror films that you can actually live through, scares are gonna be pretty thin on the ground.
I got scared by some films as a kid, I really miss that. Things like the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie, Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, those films were great cause of the atmosphere.
Night of the Living Dead is such a claustrophobic movie, and the way it analyzes human nature and how each persons actions preciptated the downfall of the group.
Older films tended to use soundtracks to more of an advantage too, and knew when to not use music. A lot of horror soundtracks are pretty generic these days.
A lot of the foreign directors are great at creating really creepy atmospheres. Dario Argento's 'Suspiria' is a classic for creepy atmosphere, as are a lot of Italian and Spanish horror. Ok, so the effects can be cheap and the dialogue is kinda tame, but the use of lighting and eerie music in the shots can really send a chill down your spine. Its something that a lot of big budget 'Hollywood' directors tend to get wrong.
Dru Malfoy: The original Ringu movies left a bit more to the imagination, rather than over explaining things like the remake. There was more atmosphere to it and it incorporated Japanese superstitions about the sea into the story, which gave it a bit more edge.
Old Master, not forgetting Ring 0: Birthday, which goes back to when Sadako was still a child. 😉

Ring 0 was pretty cool, gave more story to Sadako's past and her relationships with other people.
I like the fact that the Japanese films didn't make out that the girl was some kind of 'evil demon girl' like the remake did. She was a confused and frightened girl who had these abilities that she couldn't control or make sense of, and how she was twisted by both those abilities, and then the horrible experience of her ultimate fate.
Of course, the autopsy of Sadako's body in Ring 2 revealed that, unlike in the American remake, Sadako (Sumara) had actually lived in the well for the thirty years up to the tape being made. That would kinda mess with your head a little.

Ok this isn't a horror film as such but, I can't stand to watch 'Aracnophobia' god that film does me in, I can't stand spiders, It's like why do they need all those legs anyway, it's so they can run at you really fast and scare the crap out of you, thats why, creepy little buggers. (that doesn't mean you can send me any in the post Red either 😛 )
Another that is fairly freaky is the 'Entity' for those who haven't seen it, it stars Barbara Hershey and is about a woman that is under attack, physically, sexually and mentally, by an imense malevolent spirit. It's supposedly based on true events, I think thats what makes it more freaky.
I'm going back a bit now too, but then I am old, shut it before you even say anything 😛 'lol', but I remember as a kid watching an old black white film that had a ventriloquists dummy in it, which was took over by something evil and would then come to life and go around stabbing people with this bloody big knife, scared me s**tless it did, hence why I can't stand the things now and think they are pure evil, honestly, they really are............. 😉
I remember that one too, I used to love this film, it was on one of the cable channels recently, and although the effects are a bit naff compared to these days, the story is still good.

I thought The Shining was a really scary film but the film that really scares me the most is IT. I watched it when I was younger and it put me off clowns completly. I was on holiday last week and me and my friends were in this club and a bunch of people came in in fancy dress and one was dressed as a clown. He looked so scary, we didn't stay in that club long 🙂
