I've never seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but The Exorcist is really sick.
But I think the most terrifying, horrifying and insane movie I've ever seen is The Evil Dead.
Oh. My. God. Really nasty. But I love it!
My brother got the unrated version on DVD from Austria, because they don't sell it in Germany.

Evil Dead scared the heck out of me
As a kid Poltergeist and Alien scared the hell outta me!! Scarred me in a way, as now I find ghosts and aliens scarier than anything! I think the movie that scared me more than anything else was The Ring... so terrifying *shivers*

I'm really jumpy, so most films, even the least scary ones have the ability to make me jump! When it comes to genuinely scary though, I can't really think of any that have stayed with me, or made me want to sleep with the lights on.
There are some I find quite scary, right up until the ending, which turns out to be crap. This can be said of Case 39, and Mirrors. I thought they were really good, until the crappy endings.

All seriousness now. Some of the scariest movies I've seen are Begotten, Fire in the Sky, Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness, Hellraiser, The Devil’s Backbone to name a few.
Special shout out to The Blair Witch Project, though it wasn't real part with the kids voices and the ending was chilling.

As a horror fan, The Strangers is the most terrifying movie I've ever seen, I love it. Texas Chainsaw Massacre '73 is what nightmares are made of. Blair Witch Project, I'll second that. There's others that have great moments but none with the constant genuine terror like those movies.

Scary movies...really don't scare me. I remember seeing The Grudge 2 with my friends and it might have been the most hilarious movie experience of my life hahah but that was definitely a comedy. It had to be. If they're well done, they might creep me out or something but I don't have nightmares or jump, and I find most "terrifying" movies (by the media's standards) extremely lame. I could not believe the reactions to Paranormal Activity, people in the theater were screaming and it was ridiculous. There are also some old horror movies that seem slightly ridiculous now, but I always take when it was made into consideration. For example, The Exorcist is kind of scary...but I try to keep in mind that it released in the 70s. I cannot imagine how terrifying it must have been for some people when it first came out, you know? As a kid that movie really freaked me, but I don't believe in the devil or anything so I guess that's why it didn't absolutely terrify me (I know an extremely religious kid who left class when it was brought up). I enjoy a lot of old horror movies, ironically a few of them center around the idea of possession, like The Omen and Rosemary's baby. I'm more a fan of psychological thrillers/horror movies, like The Shining, Black Swan, Funny Games, Jacob's Ladder...there are too many to name.
So basically, I find most "traditional" horror movies (like The Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween) really fun to watch, and they scared me as a kid, but movies that mess with your head are more satisfying and freaky because they're more realistic. I could go completely nuts and start seeing things/thinking that everyone's out to get me, the thought of that happening terrifies me. I love movies in general. I have loved horror movies since I was a kid, and I have always found them freaky but...I guess, I've just always enjoyed them. Ahh this is so hard to explain! I guess I just enjoy being "scared". I put it in quotes because most people that I know who find horror movies scary, hate them. It's kind of ironic that I like them because when people scare me in real life, I get pissed 😉. But yeah, I like horror movies that aren't total cliches. The last good one that came out recently, was The Ring. Yeah, that long ago.
I'll answer this question from a childhood perspective....Halloween. I used to dream about Michael Myers coming after me, I'd see him in my kitchen, I was convinced that he could see into my bedroom window. I'm telling you, my overactive imagination is why I am so glad that I am no longer a child. Things were easier as far as school/non existent bills go...but I was terrified of the most ridiculous things! Everywhere I went, Michael Myers was somewhere, waiting for me. Going to the bathroom alone at school, scared the hell out of me. I went to a party at a bowling alley at night when I was 8, the entire time I was freaked out, convinced that he would show up. Someone's mom went outside to get something and I thought to myself, "She's dead."
You'd think that I would have stopped watching those movies because they scared me so much, but nope. It was like I enjoyed the thrill of being scared. I've always been a little nuts, heh.

The ending was really lame, but that was such a fun movie to watch! It was really effective and I loved that they didn't play suspenseful music or anything when we see the first guy behind her in the kitchen. I also love that it takes you a second to notice him...so great. I would have had a heart attack or something if I'd seen that as a kid.

Zodiac is by far the scariest movie I've seen. For the most part horror movies don't scare me because I know they aren't true, but the ones that are based on real life events freak me out. The Zodiac scares me because 1) they never caught the serial killer and 2) all the people who were suspects (who were beyond creepy) are still free roaming about.

Perhaps not very scary by today's standards.....but this flick gave ME the tiny gooseflesh when I first saw this in 1981. 😀

Absolutely! I'm a huge fan of the Evil Dead movies. Valentines Day tradition for me is to watch the movies with a healthy dose of beer and whiskey.
It was one of the first movies that really truly shocked me and made me giggle at the same time.
I actually own a shirt that has Bruce Campbell on it with the caption 'Bruce Campbell for president'.

Apart from The Blair Witch Project I haven't seen any of those movies, but will be adding them to my watch list.
Personally two of the movies that I would put up their as the scariest movies I've ever seen are The Changeling and The Woman in Black. They impacted my sleep for a long time as a teenager with their chilling scenes and slow build ups. I watched both of these movies with my parents when I started getting heavily into horror movies.
I'm looking forward to seeing the remake of The Woman in Black and I really hope they manage to maintain the gothic nature of the original and it doesn't become to 'Hollywood'
The other movie that actually impacted me quite heavily was actually Candyman. Between the ages of 12-15 I used to rent 2 movies every Saturday and watch them on my own while my parents were out for a couple of drinks. One Saturday I put on Candyman, believing that I had seen majority of 'decent' horror movies and didn't think Candyman would have much of an impact on me. I was sorely wrong. With about 20 minutes of the movie to go I actually paused it and waited for my parents to come home.
I love horror movies. They have impacted my life a lot.

The Ring bloody well scarred me for life. I'm not very good with horror anyway and that just petrified me. I can't deal with the whole scary little girls thing. I was paranoid about TVs for ages afterwards. The sound of static would make me jump a mile. Probably still would if static still happened on my TVs 😛 I have a copy of Ringu on DVD that's still in the plastic 'cause I'm too scared to watch it!
Nightmare on Elm Street, although it might not look so creepy now, terrified me too. I still can't look at Freddie's face. The idea of someone getting you when your asleep...just...urgh! Didn't help that I had recurring dreams featuring him for a good while after!

Honestly I've never been so tense in a movie. I was kinda sore when I came out because I'd been sat so tensely for the whole film 😛 And then I went to see it again like the idiot I am. (Great movie, I just can't handle horror!)
And, in another brilliantly idiotic move, I'm taking American Horror in uni next year. I'm gonna be a nervous wreck all semester...

I watch horror movies a lot now, I love that genre, especially 80's slashers which aren't really that scary though, and nothing really scares me anymore anyway, but when I was little the movies that seriously scared me were Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play and Halloween.
and I saw The House of The Devil a few weeks ago, that actually creeped me out a bit. And it was a really good movie I totally recommend it!

I don't really watch many scary films. I thought White Noise was a bit eerie but that's about it. I don't get scared easily.

Oh The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Candyman, The Ring & Silence of the Lambs are imo as scary as scary can be! I do love a good horror movie 🙂

One I forgot was Stephen King's IT. Imaging watching the movie when you're the same age as the kids. Lets just say the plug was always in when I took a shower. Another is E.T. Yeah I know what your gonna say "But he was so lovable, how could you be scared of him?". Tell me honestly that this isn't frightening.
Apparently there was a script for a darker E.T sequel where E.T's race comes to Earth and abducts Elliot and his family and preforms experiments on them. Also E.T wasn't left by mistake, he was examining the surrounds and looking for the perfect test subjects.
